Rangers TargetsEmmanuel Petit
Emmanuel Petit
Walter Smith is ready to launch a double swoop for Monaco defenders Patric Blondeau and Emmanuel Petit. The Ibrox manager was working on a £1.8 million deal to bring Blondeau to Scotland when he learned that Petit was also available for £3.5 million. Petit is rated as the best left back in France and Smith sees him as the perfect replacement for David Robertson. Both players are keen to leave Monaco at the end of the season but are under contract so a fee would be required in both cases.
Rangers double swoop for Monaco stars Patrick Blondeau and Emmanuel Petit has been hit by a dispute among rival agents. Walter Smith was due in the principality this weeken to talk to the players but has been warned to stay away because the players are unhappy that an agent representing Rangers contacted the players directly without involving their representatives. Blackburn are ready to step in to sign Blondeau and Tottenham are interested in Petit.
Walter Smith will fly to France tonight to try and agree a £5.3 million deal for Monaco defenders Patrick Blondeau and Emmanuel Petit.
Rangers have made a £4 million bid for Monaco midfielder Emmanuel Petit. Walter Smith has been trailing the Frenchman for a few months and now seems set to get his man after meeting Monaco's asking fee. Petit is also being tracked by Spurs, Blackburn and Derby but the French champions will leave the final decision to the player himself. He seems certain to jump at the chance of joining Rangers and picking up £15,000 per week.
Emmanuel Petit has paved the way for a £4 million transfer to Ibrox. Rangers have already agreed a fee for the player and the Monaco captain has admitted he fancies leaving the club. He said, "I have been here too long and this is an important stage of my career. I want to see something else, go somewhere new. I want to be at a different club. I want to leave."
Monaco skipper Emmanuel Petit is expected to complete his £4 million switch to Ibrox soon.
Emmanuel Petit could be Rangers next signing after David Murray admitted, "we've made an offer of £4.5 million for Petit. We know Inter Milan are trying to sign him and that Spurs have been tracking him for three months. Bur Walter Smith is on holiday in France and will meet the player. We're hopeful. Petit would be an extremely important addition for us." It is believed that Petit favours the thought of being a main star in the Ibrox midfield rather than a small fish at Inter.
Rangers have lost out on the signature of Monaco captain Emmanuel Petit. David Murray said, "Petit has told us he will be signing for Arsenal. We were one of four clubs who wanted to sign him at the start, the others were Spurs, Inter Milan and Arsenal. By the time we reached the final round of negotiations it was down to Arsenal and ourselves. After Walter spoke to the player he felt that Petit's strong links with his former manager Arsene Wenger would swing the deal towards Arsenal. After that we felt we were being edged up all the time. We started negotiating at £3.25 million and it ended up at £4 million. We were not prepared to be pulled up any higher."
