Aberdeen, SD – Northern State went on a 22-4 run over a 6:30 stretch of the second half to turn a 44-40 deficit into a 62-46 lead and went on to defeat North Dakota, 80-65, in men's basketball on Saturday night. The Sioux led 35-33 at the half, but the Wolves shot 66.7 percent in the second half to outscore UND 47-30. North Dakota fell to 5-3 with the loss, NSU improved to 7-3.
For the second game in a row, UND jumped out to a big first-half lead, spurred again by junior Jerome Beasley. The 6-10 forward scored eight points in the game's opening five minutes as the Sioux jumped out to an 18-4 lead.
Down 26-15 with 8:42 to play, Northern State went on a 16-2 run to take a 31-28 lead with 3:00 to play. A Beasley jumper and two made free throws by freshman Mike Johnson put UND back up by the half.
Beasley finished the half with 16 points, hitting 7-of-13 shots. He also had a team-high five rebounds. NSU's Sundance Wicks hit 5-of-6 shots and scored 13 points.
A layup by sophomore Josh Johnson gave the Sioux a 41-36 lead with 17:35 to play, but the five-point margin would be their largest of the half.
Sophomore Jeff Brandt hit a jumper to put UND up 44-40 with 15:19 to play before NSU went on its 22-2 run that put UND in too deep of a hole to climb out of, particularly on the road in front of 3,429 hostile fans. The Sioux cut the 16-point lead to six, 66-60, on a junior Mario Porter jumper with 3:20 to play but NSU scored the next seven points to put the game away.
Northern State hit 16-of-24 shots in the second half (.667) and shot 54.0 percent for the game. UND shot 36.7 percent in the second half, 40.3 percent for the game. The Wolves held a 38-32 rebounding advantage.
Beasley finished with 27, the only UND player to reach double figures. He also had six rebounds and four steals. Porter had eight points and five assists. Junior Ryan Walker finished with six points and six assists.
Northern State had four players in double figures, led by Wicks' 21 points and eight rebounds.
The Sioux play again next Friday when they host Minnesota-Crookston at Engelstad Arena. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m., the second half of a women's/men's doubleheader. On Saturday UND hosts Kansas at 1 p.m., also at Engelstad Arena.
