Jussie's report on Round 2, 1999/2000

And they say footbal is a funny game! A fantastic form reversal by the women's team and a solid, if not spectacular effort from the men made State League compulsory viewing as usual.

The Women

The women's team showed that they can be a force when everyone is fit and well and enthusiastic. A win over Essendon, Doncaster and Eastside has put them right in the thick of it for the new season.

Tamsyn Lewis again showed that she is prepared to run injust about anything and her 400m in 53.86 was a highlight of the night. Similarly, Mandy Giblin ran very well to win her heat of the 1500m and we can look forward to bigger and better things from Mandy as the season moves on.

For many in the crowd, Sarah Wiltshire's performance was a thrill and it is safe to say that she was the only athlete to receive cheers each time she cleared a height. To see her clear 3.05 in her first competition was something else.

Megan Boyes, Breanna Neighbour and Jeanette Bowles all scored big points for the team as did Karen Lyne who won her Triple Jump

Mention must also be made of the two walkers who competed early and before many of us had arrived. Shirly and Megan came 4th and 5th respectively and are already racking up good points.

To the Men...

After a first up win, the men knuckled down to the task but could only come in third behind Essendon and Glenhuntly.

Hans Lotz, Matt Brown and Nick Baltas all picked up much needed points in the throws and certainly give the team balance. (The competition for a spot in the Jav is already hotting up!)

The 100m runners ran very well, again, with Bo leading them home in his heat with an 11.09 in unfavourable conditions.

'Nfa's enthusiasm is catching helped the 4x100 team run a blinder considering that half the team was sitting around filling in profiles 5 minutes before the race!

Stu ran a bold 400 and comment was made that he may have run a PB for 200 during the first half of the race...

Tony Wilson and "Brenno" ran very well in the 1500m and Tony defied anyone to run him down, after taking the lead in the second lap. They couldn't. He won. Two out of two is a great performance in very competitive races and Tony should be congratulated.

All in all, a very interesting night and we look forward to next week.

Cheers, Justin
