Jussie's report on Round 5, 1999/2000

The Men

On a fairly cold and windy Thursday night, there was not a lot to get overly excited about upon arrival at OP, but things can hot up fairly quickly.

Having drawn Eastside in the round which clashed with the national all-schools, we couldn't be too sure what to expect. As it turned out, we were against a very strong team that held us off comfortably on the night.

Hans Lotz has done a great job organising the Hammer for us and on Thursday night he was rewarded with a victory in the event. Nick and Tom threw the Jav and while Nick was a little out of sorts, we can rest assured that we have the strongest throwing team in the state.

Tom also managed to pull in second place in the high jump, but Matt had one of those nights in triple, but as one of most reliable athletes, Matt will bounce back.

Our shot and discus were done, but not for want of trying. Nick volunteered to throw shot and I trundled my way around the discus ring but all to no avail, I'm afraid. This will not have to happen again.

On the track things went on as per usual. Justin, Bo, Tim, Nfa, Aaron, Tony, Brenno, Stu and Ev all showed, yet again that we can mix it with the best.

Brenno ran a big PB in the 1500 and broke 4 minute for teh first time. Neil has doubled up on every program this year and is a fantastic person to have in the team. With all of regular guys doing so well, it should be added incentive to sure up our spot in the top four when we get back into it in the new year.

We also know how easy it is to be stiff in this competition as Clinton Perrett ran 4.05.05 in the 1500 to miss qualifying by 0.05...that bites!

Anyway, I have enjoyed the first half of the season, as, I hope, you all have. Firsts and seconds should get us into the finals and then you just never know...

Women

The women, on the same, dreary night, performed very well and showed that they, too are capable of pushing into the finals.

Tamsyn Lewis was again outstanding and has been the recruit of the year. A top class 400 as well as a 100 and an aborted relay leg showed that her committment is outstanding.

Karen Lyne, Sarah Wiltshire, Megan Boyes and Jeanette Bowles all proved that they are top level athletes and love getting out there and running.

It was excellent to see Susie Power have her first run for the year and we wish her all the best for the upcoming Olympic year and hope that things go to plan.

As with the men, the women are very capable of making the finals and a win or two (plus no fourth finishes) would help enormously.

I hope that everyone has an injury-free, if not rockin' good Christmas break and that New Year's Eve is something to remember, not something forgotten in a alcohol induced blur. (please note that this wish does not include the men's team manager)If you feel a bit seedy after a bit feast, just remember that at least you haven't eaten 10 dim sims in a day like I did recently!

See you soon...

Cheers, Justin
