May 3, 1997Wheaton Wings 2, Alexandria Flames 2
GEORGE WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL, ALEXANDRIA - In Alexandria against the Flames, the Wings held on to gain a valuable point on the road. Conditions were tough in regards to the field and wind, but the vocal crowd and officiating were perhaps even bigger distractions for the visiting team.
Wheaton scored first through a penalty via the right foot of Kim Cooper (Poolesville H.S.). Eileen Murray (Paint Branch H.S.) was fouled in the area and Cooper found the left side of the net. Cooper maintained her concentration and scored after the referee had her retake the kick after she made her first attempt.
The Flames struck back, however, sneaking a long free kick just under the crossbar. Murray then reestablished the Wing lead with ten minutes to go in the half as she was released into the home team's penalty area by Christy Mulshine's (Churchill H.S.) long diagonal pass giving Wheaton a 2-1 halftime edge.
Alexandria took full advantage of the wind in the second period, but were unable to break through save a shot after the referee's whistle midway through the period. The Flames pressed on, but were unable to take the victory thanks to the staunch Wing defending. Katie Palisoul (Whitman H.S.), Laura Franek (Maret H.S.) and Sarah McKenzie (Whitman H.S.) helped hold the Flame attack in check.
