April 12, 1997Fredrick Spirit 5, Wheaton Wings 1
STONEGATE PARK - The visiting Frederick United handed the Wheaton Wings a 5-1 defeat at Stonegate Park on Saturday, April 12. The loss marked the Wings’ first defeat at Stonegate since 1994 and was just Wheaton’s second home loss since the 1995 Spring season.
United were able to control the midfield most of the day and moved to 3-0-1 on the season and into second place in WAGS Division I. The Wings fell to 0-1-1 and into a tie for sixth in the league.
The United took the game to the Wings on the wet field and opened the scoring just ten minutes into the contest. Wheaton equalized midway through the first half through a glancing header by Eileen Murray (Paint Branch H.S.) off an early cross by Katie Wotring (Washington Waldorf). But it one of the few times the home side looked dangerous as Frederick regained their edge catching the Wing defense in transition to take a 2-1 edge into the intermission.
Wheaton tried to find an equalizer, but were unable to put together some of their trademark intricate passing moves on the wet field and against the team that had revenge on their minds. The Wings ended Frederick’s quest for a perfect 1996 Fall Season with a 2-1 win almost five months ago.
United earned a 5-1 win on the day by scoring three unanswered second-half goals.
Yemi Abayomi (Walt Whitman H.S.) and Ameyali Ramos (Walt Whitman H.S.) played fine games for the Wings.
