Wheaton Wings 2, Millersville Jaguars 2

Maryland Cup First Round

April 27, 1997

POTOMAC POLO GROUNDS - The Wings put themselves into position to advance out of the first phase with a good performance in a 2-2 tie with the Division II Millersville Jaguars on April 27. The tie meant the winner of the Wheaton - Potomac match (to be played later the same day) would advance as the winner of group one.

Wheaton started well, but were unlucky to fall behind early to Millersville. The Wings battled back and within five minutes had equalized. Yemi Abayomi's (Whitman H.S.) run down the left side and ensuing cross could not be dealt with by the Jaguar defense as they forced it into their own net. Wheaton had several other chances in the first half, but were unable to find the net and the teams were still even at the intermission.

The Wings' consistently won balls out of the air and dictated the tempo, but MSA would again find themselves ahead after finding an opening through the Wing back line. A Jaguar through ball found three Millersville players behind the Wheaton defense, and it was 2-1 to the upstart Division IIers.

Once again the Wings had to battle back and they found an equalizer through Ariel Dean (Georgetown Visitation H.S.) with 15 minutes to go. Consistent pressure could not amount to another goal, but the Wings had what they had wanted to get from the contest, a point and a feeling of playing well. Deborah Wiesenfelder (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) and Anna Wasserstrom (Wilson H.S.) played well for the Division I side.
