Maryland Cup First Round
April 27, 1997Potomac Best 7, Wheaton Wings 1
POTOMAC POLO GROUNDS - The Wings had put themselves into position to advance out of the first phase, with a good performance in a 2-2 tie with the Division II Millersville Jaguars on April 27. The tie meant the winner of the Wheaton - Potomac match (to be played later the same day) would advance as the winner of group one. A more rested Potomac squad (who played its other first-round game the day before) quickly erased any doubts with a 7-1 victory.
The Premier Division Best took full advantage of their schedule to defeat Wheaton 7-1. Potomac had defeated MSA 3-0 on April 26. Katie Wotring (Washington Waldorf H.S.) scored the lone Wing goal in the second half. The tired Wheaton bunch was unable to get its passing game going, or defend with its usual intensity.
