Potomac Memorial Day Tournament - First Round
May 25, 1997Richmond Capitals 2, Wheaton Wings 0
POTOMAC POLO GROUNDS - With a semifinal place at stake, Richmond handed Wheaton a 2-0 defeat on Sunday morning, the second day of the 1997 Potomac Memorial Day Tournament. Wheaton finished the group phase of the event in third place with a 1-0-2 record, while the Capitals finished second and advanced with a 2-0-1 mark.
The Wings were much better organized than the previous afternoon's contest against F.C. Dayton, with the Capitals forced to try and create their attacks down the Wheaton flanks. The first half ended 0-0 with Eileen Murray (Paint Branch H.S.) and Deborah Wiesenfelder (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) just missing out on scoring chances.
The second half was played for the most part on the Wings' half, with Wheaton trying to counterattack out of their end. A soft cross eluded the Wing defense midway through the period, and Richmond capitalized to make it 1-0. They would later add a second to secure their semifinal place. Erin Martin (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) and Sarah McKenzie (Whitman H.S.) had fine games for Wheaton.
F.C. Dayton went on to defeat the Richmond Capitals 2-0 in the Tournament Finals on Monday, May 26.
