May 19, 1997Wheaton Wings 2, Seneca Sharks 0
STONEGATE PARK - Wheaton continued its late-season surge by defeating the visiting Seneca Sharks 2-0. The Wings have won their past two contests and have moved to fifth place in the WAGS Division I table with nine points from eight contests (2-3-3). Seneca fell to 0-2-6 on the season.
Kim Cooper (Poolesville H.S.) helped the Wings set the tone as she bent a free kick from just outside the right corner of the box into the left corner of the net in the contest's third minute. It was Cooper's fourth goal in the league this season. Wheaton then dug in and was able to control much of the rest of the half with sharp combinations. The Sharks did create two opportunities off corners in the first period, but were uable to capitalize as the half finished 1-0.
The second half was more of the same with Wheaton pushing forward and trying to carve diagonal balls through the Shark defense. Forwards Ariel Dean (Georgetown Visitation), Katie Palisoul (Whitman H.S.) and Deborah Wiesenfelder (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) each just missed getting on the end of through passes from Lindsay Daughters (Churchill H.S.),Christy Mulshine (Churchill H.S.) and Eileen Murray (Paint Branch H.S.). The Wings got their break when Wiesenfelder was fouled to the ground in the Seneca penalty area in the game's 64th minute. Murray converted the spot kick, her sixth tally of the league season, for the 2-0 victory.
The Wings recorded their first-ever shutout in Division I with Yemi Abayomi (Whitman H.S.), Laura Franek (Maret H.S), Erin Martin (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) and Anna Wasserstrom (Wilson H.S.) putting the clamps on the Shark attack. Sarah McKenzie (Whitman H.S.) got the shutout in goal for the home side.
