May 11, 1997Wheaton Wings 3, Southwest Wildthing 1
BULL RUN REGIONAL PARK - In arguably the team's best effort of the season, Wheaton defeated the Wildthing 3-1 at Bull Run Regional Park. A beautiful day and field welcomed the Wings' passing attack back to the forefront after a long vacation. But the Wings' fine day did not go without some bumps along the way as the home team worked hard the entire day.
Wheaton controlled the play at the start and made several attacks down the left side and in fact had an early goal disallowed for off-side. However, Southwest scored against the run of play and on their first offensive chance. The left forward sped past by the last Wing defender and promptly finished just seven minutes into the contest.
The visitors would battle back and resumed their possession advantage, thwarting SWYA's counters by invoking a deep center back deployment. Kim Cooper (Poolesville H.S.) got Wheaton on the board finishing off a scramble in front of the Wildthing net at the 35 minute mark to end the first half 1-1.
The second half gave the Wings' the wind and much more of the play and individuals made big plays when needed. Sarah McKenzie (Whitman H.S.) kept the scores level with a big save midway through the second period. Ariel Dean (Georgetown Visitation H.S.) tallied her first goal of the season off a set piece in the 62nd minute. Dean played a one-two with Ameyali Ramos (Whitman H.S.) inside the box after Erin Martin (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) found her at the far post from 35-yards out. Mijo Cavallaro (Whitman H.S.) sealed the contest with a goal, also her first of the season, just ten minutes from the final whistle.
Outstanding for Wheaton were Eileen Murray (Paint Branch H.S.), Christy Mulshine (Churchill H.S.) and Katie Wotring (Washington Waldorf).
