Gretzky considered for Hall of Fame w/o waiting period

Wayne Gretzky will be eligible immediately for the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Hall made the decision Thursday after a conference call of the board of selectors. They waived the three-year waiting period necessary for a player to become eligible. Gretzky's nomination will be discussed at a meeting June 23. The next induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 22. Gretzky, the all-time leader in points, goals and assists, retired after playing his final game with the New York Rangers April 25. He scored 894 goals, 1,963 assists and 2,857 points. The decision to waive the waiting period was unanimous. The Hall has previously waived the period for 10 players.
