The Brixia gymnastics club won the Italian first division Championship three times (in 1998, 1999 and 2000).
The 2000 team members were: Irene Castelli, Francesca Morotti, Monica Bergamelli, Giorgia Denti and Charlie Franzoni.
Updates
Italy will not send a full women's team to the World Championships, opting instead for 3 individuals. Monica Bergamelli and Giorgia Denti from Brescia will be joined by Gal Lissone's Cristina Cavalli. This will be the first World Championship for both Cavalli and Denti. Giorgia Denti's selection caps a huge comeback from her, after a career-threatening elbow injury sidelined her for most of last year. The expected SV for Monica and Giorgia are
Mony:V 9.8/9.7 - UB 9.8 - BB 9.8 - FX 9.7
Giorgia: V 9.2 - UB 9.00 - BB 9.6 - FX 9.2
The Italian team is leaving for Ghent on October 22nd.
Adriana Crisci, Italy's most decorated gymnast in the 90's, announced her retirement last week. We all wish her the best of luck in her future career as a coach. Grazie per tutto, Adry =)!
The Italian team (Monica Bergamelli, Maria Teresa Gargano, Giusy Cozzolino) won the 4th edition of the Lugano Cup ahead of the Dutch and French teams. Monica was a major contributor to the team's score of 69.3 pts. She won the all-around by over 0.8 points over Suzanne Harmes of the Netherlands, and scored a 9.4 on vault for her yurchenko double twist. She also performed a new combination on beam ff-arabian and scored a 9.0 on the event. Her tumbling on floor was equally impressive, with a whip full-in, arabian double front, triple twist and double pike. Her expected SV was a 9.7, but she was only awarded a 9.5.
Women's all-around results
1 Monica Bergamelli ITA 35.875 (9.400 V, 8.800 UB, 9.000 BB, 8.675 FX)
2 Suzanne Harmes NL 35.025
3 Alexandra Balz CH 34.400
4 Berber Van Der Berg NL 33.550
5 Maria Teresa Gargano ITA 33.075
9 Giusy Cozzolino ITA 31.9
Monica Bergamelli was a key member on the Italian team who placed 4th at the recently concluded European team championships. Using a 2-2-2 formula -2 women, 2 men and 2 rhythmic gymnasts- the competition is still in the experimental stages. Monica Bergamelli, Adriana Crisci (WAG) Alberto Busnari, Matteo Morandi (MAG), Laura Zacchilli and Daniela Masseroni (RG) advanced to the quarterfinal round with a win over Germany's team 130.996-128.735 pts. After defeating Great Britain's team, Italy qualified to the semifinal round, where they lost to Russia and later on missed out on the bronze medal in the consolation final against Spain.
Brescia's team (Bergamelli, Castelli, Denti) placed second in the third stage of the Italian Championships. Andreea Raducan was not allowed to compete for Brescia because it turns out the rules state a gymnast has to be present at the first stage of the Championships, even if she can't compete due to injury at that time. Irene Castelli led off Brescia's effort with an 8.85 on vault for her Hristakieva. Monica had an unfortunate fall on her yurchenko double full, but made up for it with an 8.8 on bars and a beautiful floor routine, complete with a full in and arabian double front. Irene also competed bars, scoring an 8.1 and Giorgia Denti got an 8.1 on floor. The final scores were extremely close, but Gal Lissone edged out Brixia 51,075 to 50,900 pts.
Monica turned in a very good performance at the American Cup, placing 5th in the AA, with a score of 35.130 pts (9.193 V, 8.525 UB, 8.725 BB, 8.687 FX), despite a calf injury suffered only a few days before the start of the event, making her good result that much more impressive. Phots from the event will be added soon.
Brescia won the first meet of the Italian Club Championships with a score of 50.25 pts. Monica Bergamelli competed all three events, debuting a new bars routine for which she scored an 8.575, and hitting a solid and much-improved beam routine. Irene Castelli performed very well on bars and beam, where she has a new press mount to 1/1 in HS, into a planche. Giorgia Denti, back to full strength after being plagued with injuries last year, hit a nice hristakieva on vault. (As usual, meet report is courtesy of Alessandro).
