FIVE YEARS AGO: Feb. 13, 1994
Filling in a Sunday off day with a trade rumor (though I remember spending
it at yet another Columbia basketball loss, this one in the final 10
seconds to Harvard) -- how about Joe Sakic from the Quebec Nordiques for a
package headlined by Sergei Zubov? At the time, the Rangers are said not to
be willing to part with the young speedy offensive defenseman, who is
instrumental in the Rangers' flying success against the growing trend
toward the neutral-zone trap. Zubov will go on to lead the team in scoring,
the first defenseman ever to do that for a team that finished first
overall. He will eventually be traded to Pittsburgh in 1995, but not before
Quebec tries, shadily, to get him first.
