1998 Spring Training Ride Series - Race #4
ACME Concrete Good turnout for the fourth race of the Spring Series. We had 59 enthusiastic riders show up. Warm temperatures ruled the day. Thankx again to all that helped out, including Greg Turpen (registration&course marking), Ken Buechler (registration&first-aid tech), Neil & Jay Webber (Facilities), Rich Hallen (course marking) and Marc Umphreys & Dave Wunschel who came up with an excellent course at ACME. Thankx all! Check out the Beginner Race (Overall) Results. The Sport Race "Poke's Big Adventure" Round 4 of the series dawned and I found myself once again astride my trusty steed "The Battleship Potemkin" ("Poke" for short) lined up to do battle with the other Sport Class riders (OK, I'll admit to being on the same course but I don't think the leaders were shaking in their SPD's). The command was given to GO and the pack took off like a shot down the road. Except for one minor bunch-up as the trail took some sharp turns, that most of us weren't expecting, I never saw the rest of the pack again. By the time I got to the end of the road and took the sharp right hand turn onto the singletrack, I knew that this wasn't going to be my day ... my legs felt like lead. (I can hear most of you thinking to yourselves, "Geez, Kevin. When is it ever your day? You're slow!") The first lap was a learning experience for me as I hadn't been able to preride the course. The layout was excellent and a real blast to ride. One of the best ACME courses I've ridden. The rest of the race went by pretty much all on my own. I was able to catch a few riders and I think that I was gaining on the people that finished in front of me. I got kinda beat-up on the bottom portion of the singletrack but I managed to finish strong and most importantly, I had fun. Couple of humorous incidents happened during the race (at least I thought they were humorous). I was attempting to pass on the bottom portion of the course. We were running through the overgrown doubletrack. When I got far enough in front of the other rider, I got my front wheel up out of the rut ... but my back wheel stayed in the original track for awhile. Looked like I was doing an on-ground crossover maneuver. Anyways, the rider I passed thought it was cool. The other incident happened right at the end of the race. I was almost done with the third lap when I heard and felt this rider coming up behind me FAST! He was firing on all twelve of his supercharged cylinders while I felt like I was intermittently firing on one of my three Yugo powered cylinders, so I pulled off the trail to let him pass. I think I startled him by doing so and he thought he startled me! Turns out he was an expert class rider who had a flat and was running a little behind. Anyways, cool race and we'll hopefully see all of you out at the final Spring Series race at Finley Hills on April 5th. Check out the Sport Race (Overall) Results.
