1999 Spring Training Series - Race #2
Finley Hills As I stepped out my door to start heading out to the race course, the wind wasn't that big of a factor. Apparently, the weather gods decided that we needed even more of a challenge than the longer course could provide so they whipped up some 20mph headwinds for us to contend with. Once again, we had quite a few racers from out-of-town: Kent - Yakima - Union Gap - Auburn - College Place - Bellevue - Moses Lake - Bend, OR & Hermiston, OR. Thanks to all that helped out, including Don Lewis, Jay Weber (for the "facilities"), and Brent Strecker (registration). A big THANKX to the sponsors who contributed towards the raffle prizes: SCOTT'S CYCLE & SPORTS [Hermiston], KENNEWICK SCHWINN, RICHLAND SCHWINN, MARKEE'S CYCLING CENTER [Kennewick], BIG RIVER BIKE WERKS [Kennewick], SAGEBRUSH CYCLES [Yakima], and BICYCLE BARN [Walla Walla]. Stop by any of these businesses and let them know that you appreciate their support of the Spring Series. Goto the finish order for this race. The Beginner Race Just like the first race, we had a small beginner field and in a repeat, Steve Henry took 1st place followed closely by Aaron Bradford and Daren Shaver. The rest of the field was strung out some and all but one managed to finish the race. Great job all!! Check out the Beginner Race (Overall) Results. The Sport Race Westside racers once again grabbed top honors although this time there was no 1-2 finish. Jon Pfilipson, grabbed first place with local talent Rob Hastings and Jeremy Duerkson speeding home to take 2nd & 3rd. Mike Rolsik rode hard to take 4th place in his very first race (or so he said <VBG>). Not one of the sport riders threatened to kill me ... although with the wind and the increased length of the loop, this was a much tougher race than the first one. A tip of my helmet to all who came out to race. Check out the Sport Race (Overall) Results. The Expert Race Tim Evans came up from the 160+ inches of powder in Bend, OR to do battle on the course with Mark Painter. For two hard laps, Mark put the hurt on Tim. Somewhere on the last lap, the "Jooper" ran out of gas and Tim flew in to take 1st. I overheard him say that he couldn't believe how fast Mark was flyin' on the first two laps. The "Jooper" still had 7 minutes on 3rd place finisher Jeremy Freisz. This was a tough early season course and the wind+length took it's toll. Cory Welsh finished 4th and Michael Henry Jr continues to impress with a 5th place finish. Bob McEachern made my day by exclaiming loudly, every time he passed me, how much fun he was having! Check out the Expert Race (Overall) Results. Great Race to all riders ... Hope to see you all (and your buddies) at Olympia St on March 7th.
