1999 Spring Training Series - Race #5
Chamna Preserve (ACME Concrete) We had a really great day for the last race of the 1999 Spring Series. It had rained some on Friday night but there were only a few sections of trail that had water or mud on them. The Kennewick Police Department stopped by and showed us the new patrol bicycles that they had purchased using the funds donated to them by the Flyers Cycling Club and the Chinook Cycling Club (1998 Fall Series proceeds). The course was very fast with some sharp turn sections mixed in to keep racers on their toes. Out-of-town racers represented the following cities: Prosser - Yakima - Moses Lake - Union Gap - Wenatchee - Selah - Walla Walla - Ione, OR. I want to personally extend a big THANKX to all the competitors for this year's Series. Last, but certainly not least, I'd like to thank those who helped me run this race: Bill & Cass Worthen (Race Boards), Jay Webber ("facilities"), Steve & Michael (Sr&Jr) Henry (Course Set-up & Tear-down) and Robert Croft (Course Tear-down). A big THANKX to the sponsors who contributed towards the raffle prizes: RATTLESNAKE MOUNTAIN BREWING CO, BIG RIVER BIKE WERKS [Kennewick], SAGEBRUSH CYCLES [Yakima], BICYCLE BARN [Walla Walla], SCOTT'S CYCLE & SPORTS [Hermiston], KENNEWICK SCHWINN, RICHLAND SCHWINN, and MARKEE'S CYCLING CENTER [Kennewick]. Stop by any of these businesses and let them know that you appreciate their support of the Spring Series. Goto the finish order for this race. The Beginner Race Fresh back from his appearance in the Sea Otter Classic, Steve Henry once again stood atop the leader board with Brandon Beightol and Rod Spaniel finishing 2nd & 3rd. Jamie Freisz, who rode the whole race with a great big grin on her face, moto'd in for a well deserved 4th. The Top 4 Overall finishers ended up like this: Steve Henry (time to move up a class Steve <G>), Rod Spaniel, Jamie Freisz, and Bob Hawks. GREAT JOB! Check out the Beginner Race (Overall) Results. The Sport Race Russ Staples shot around the 3 lap course to take the top spot with Jay Webber and Rod Hastings hot on his tail. Special mention goes to Lars Smith who started late and still managed to take the 9th spot. With consistent high finishes, Rob Hastings took the Overall Title with Jay Webber, Russ Staples, & Tom Bosch rounding out the Top 4. Good racing by everyone! Check out the Sport Race (Overall) Results. The Expert Race Jason Jablonski came down from Wenatchee to speed around the course for 1st place. Daniel Cooley and Don Lewis were 2nd and 3rd with a hard charging John Limbaugh not far behind. Top 4 Overall for the Experts were: Mark Painter, Cory Welsh, Jeremy Freisz, and Clint Andring. Check out the Expert Race (Overall) Results. That's it for this year. Hope everyone had fun and we'll see you next week (April 10) for the 5th Annual Finley Hills Challenge. Till next year, this is your fairly faithful race reporter, JRA, signing off. See you on the trails!
