TEAM RECORDS

Calgay Flames (6-6-2); won their last game against Los Angeles 5-4

SEASON RECORD

This is Vancouver's first game of the season against Calgary.

OVERVIEW

The Flames have recently gone from one the expected jokes in the Western Conference to turning some heads, particularily with the superb play of Theoren Fluery.  This is a important early game for the Canucks, since the Flames are also in the Northwest Divison.  The Flames currently lead the Canucks in the standings by a point, but the Canucks have a game in hand, and could pull ahead tonight with a win.   Garth Snow is getting another chance to start tonight, after being yanked in 6 1/2 minutes last game against the Kings.  Vancouver will have to see continued production from Alexander Mogilny and Mark Messier, who are both playing excellent offensively; and the young guns will have to continue to play a solid game.  D Bryan McCabe returns tonight for his first game back for the Canucks after ending his holdout on Tuesday night, and this will help a Canuck defense that has already played fairly well this year.   McCabe will share the ton of ice time that has fallen on the shoulders of Mattias Ohlund and Adrian Aucoin.

STREAKS

The Canucks are on a one game losing streak .  The Flames are on a two game winning streak.

INJURIES

   Calgary Vancouver
D Steve Smith (bruised ribs)
G Ken Wregget (sprained ankle)
C Bob Bassen (knee surgery)
C Michael Nylander (knee surgery)
LW Brad May (flu)
LW Todd Bertuzzi (fractured tibia)

THINGS TO WATCH FOR

    1. A good game from Bryan McCabe.
    2. A dangerous and annoying Theoren Fluery.
    3. A comeback effort from G Garth Snow.

SUPERFAN PREDICTION

Calgary and Vancouver are two teams that were not expected to play well this year.  The critics have been wrong so far, and these teams will battle it out big time to keep the heat off their back.  I'm giving the edge to Vancouver, who have had a few days off and simply have more offensive punch than the Flames.
