Canucks Prepare for Waiver Draft
Source: The Vancouver Province (http://www.vancouverprovince.com)
The Canucks have exposed only two players, a telling number that shows how
young the Canucks roster really is. Larry Courville and Mark Wotton have been made
available for the waiver draft on Monday. The Canucks are in good position to pick
up some of the more desirable waiver possibilities, since they pick fourth (behind
Nashville, Tampa Bay, and Florida). Terry Bell, Sports Reporter for the Province,
suggests the fact that the Canucks have protected Leif Rohlin, who is essentially going
nowhere with the organization, is indicative of the team planning on plucking someone from
the waiver wire. Since taking a player in the draft requires the team to expose
another player in kind, it is highly likely Rohlin is being "saved" in the event
that this happens. Several good players are available, notably C Brent Gilchrist
(Detroit), LW Valeri Zelepukin (Edmonton), D Jeff Norton (Florida), and G Corey Schwab
(Tampa Bay).
