Mark Messier has reached another
milestone tonight against the Florida Panthers. Messier has joined the exclusive
600-goal club, of which there are now ten members. Messier did a one-timer wrist
shot off a pass from Alexander Mogilny from behind the net. The shot somehow found
its way behind Panthers goaltender Kirk McLean, and was the final goal in a 5-0 rout by
Vancouver. Messier is in his 20th year in the league, and has played in 1,360 NHL
games. Of the 600 goals, 148 were scored on the powerplay, 55 were scored
shorthanded, 75 were game winners, and 13 resulted in a tie game. Messier is also an
amazing sniper, scoring on 16.8% of his shots over the course of his career. Messier's family was in attendance at the game, and the Florida crowd gave a warm ovation, many fans holding signs cheering him on. The goal was scored in front of a packed stadium, many fans of whom obviously came in hopes of seeing the historic goal. If Messier continues to produce, he could easily retire in 6th place, which is 14 goals away. |
