If my mother and I stayed in Odessa, I would have graduated from Permian. But, we moved to the Phoenix area in November of 1966. I sure do miss Texas football. People in AZ think that they have some pretty good teams. I haven't seen any that could play as well as any of the Permian teams. Especially, the teams of the sixties. You just can't beat Texas high school football.

I've witnessed some great games played by great players from Permian over the years, but none compare to the 1965 game against San Angelo. San Angelo was ranked #1 in the state and considered unstoppable. The faked extra point that resulted in a 2 point conversion was the smoothest and most deceptive play I've ever witnessed. The defense was unbelievable. A San Angelo man in the stands, so goes the legend (and is in fact true), passed away from a heart attack right after that faked extra point. I have ever, ever felt electricity in the stands the way I felt it that night. I've often heard and agree that the 1972 team had the most awesome offense of any Permian team. I would have to say that the '65 team had the most awesome defense of any Permian tea . This was a team that had the bulk of a "not so good" team from the year before. Gene Mayfield stepped in as coach and turned Permian football around forever. He got the players to believe in themselves and instituted the feeder system, which became t e backbone for all of Permian football. He also let it be known that HE was the one who was going to make all decisions as to who played, not the parents or the boosters. While other coaches have done well at Permian and should be congratulated, Gene Mayfield laid the foundation for all that followed the '65 team. No team in Permian's history had come from being so lowly rated to emerge as state champions the way that tea did. The term "Mojo" didn't exist then, but that night at Barrett Stadium was the night "Mojo" was born and a statewide legend took it's first steps.

I read Friday Night Lights- I dont get how people think its normal? The basis of the 1st couple of chapters were on racism and how prejudice the south is and Permian. It showed how people like boobeys was accepted only because he played football. When he as injured in a scrimmage, the town people saw him as another African-American who should live on the otherside of the tracks....I dont know how Odessa is now? Well, I had the privelidge of seeing this 'page,' and I posted my thoughts on the other 'page.' Here's everything. BAHAHAH!

Oh look, the hick infested high school is now hideously portrayed and designed on the INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY! WOW! Let us all marvel at the pathetic design skills this "webmaster" took so long to create! What an utterly hideous attept to rehash m mories from quite possibly most stereotypical high school known to man.

"Mojo Magic" was nothing but level headed jocks, a gimp infested marching band, and the dinky 'image is everything' cheerleading squad. The sad thing is, the parents and teachers don't REALLY care (save a few) about the education system. It's all about fo tball. A good football player in High School doesn't have to think; all he has to do is play, and he's pretty much promised a degree. If a normal, average student who doesn't play football tried to stand out, he would be ridiculed and frowned upon.

I have no need to bash the Cheerleading squad. They do a great job of bashing themselves without even knowing it.

Oh, and then there's the 'Band.' Why try to put music to a bunch of sloppy chunks of flesh banging against each other on a grassy field? Why do the members of the BAND actually try to live up to the director's standards? You'll NEVER be good enough! If yo make mistakes, you're the DEVIL! You don't get the chance to learn from your teachings because they're crammed down your throat! Encouragement is such a foreign word to these 'Directors.' Yelling and screaming is their way of teaching you.
For the record, Ragsdale (former Permian Band Director and full time dictator wanna-be) did NOT TEACH. He did NOT encourage. He yelled, screamed, and spit in your face (literally). You were never good enough. The only thing I benifited and learned from hi ramblings was how not to put up with someone's CRAP. Thge sad thing is, that is how most Band Directors are. If you hate your job, DO SOMETHING ELSE! It's so sad that people don't figure something THAT SIMPLE out in the duration of their entire life!

Mojo does not praise the mind. They praise the matter. Smart people are not rewarded for their deeds. Jocks are more than compensated for running around with a piece of plastic. No wonder our education system is ridiculed by so many.

I hope someone actually starts trying over there education-wise.

There is one thing I learned from High School at Permian. How NOT to influence people, and how NOT to govern myself. I can't stress enough that anyone that lives in Odessa with any form of ambition should get out as fast as you can. Take my word for it. I m glad I got the hell out of Odessa. Life for me has done nothing but get better, and it continues to do so day by day. I make excellent money at my pseudo dream-job, and I'm only 19 years old! Believe me, it's more than band directors make, heh (t at was mean, but it felt really good).

I hope I helped some people see the light. Feel free to email me too. I'd love to hear your reasons why you think I'm wrong, and I'd love EVEN MORE to give you twice as many reasons why I'm RIGHT. Go Mojo. BAHAHAHAH!

I love high school football. I am currently in college to be a teacher so I can coach high school football. I graduated high school 3 years ago. My high schholl team has great tradition. We won state in 1994 and my senior year in 1996 we lost in state semifinals because our quarterback got suspended for drinking. He was a sophomore at the time. He is now a redshirt freshmen at Michigan battling Drew Henson for the starting job. Lloyd Carr has told him he'll give him a fair shot for the job. My head coach recently took a new head coaching job and asked to be on his staff as a freshmen coach. My dream is finally reached. My grandpa lives in Lewisville, Texas. I have made the journey to visit the last 2 years. I hyave seen some great games by Steph nville both years. I just love the atmosphere because it is so electric.

I read the book Friday Night Lights and I was just shocked that people take football as serious as I do. Just thought I would drop you panthers a line. I am a history teacher and a football and basketball coach in a small school in southeastern N.C. on the coast. I assist in football but am the varsity basketball coach. I inherited a program three years ag that was a perenial loser. I have been able to turn the program around and now we are a fixture in the state playoffs. My team web page is listed above. I have read friday night lights and was moved by the book. The thing that I covet as a coach is t am commitment. I have shared exerpts from the book with my players. If I could ever get our kids to commit like the permian players the sky would be the limit. When I was a junior in high school a couple of years ago our football team had just come off the second losing season in a row. This was very disappointing not only to me but to the entire town. There had been a coaching change and the new coach took over and we proceeded to have those two losing seasons. The tension was there because the previous coach had been coaching for 30 years and we hadn't had a losing season in roughly 25 years. After reading FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS my friends and I who all were under lassmen starters on the last two teams decided that we wanted the experience of high school football like in your town. We used your example all summer in conditioning and everything we did. Now we aren't nearly the type of powerhouse that you are but th season following the reading of the book we were able to turn the program around to the right direction again and win the conference championship. And we got our glimpse of what it means to have the type of pride that you do in your great program. To thi day one of my goals in life is to get to a Odessa Permian High School football home game and see the real friday night lights.

I'm a high school football coach in Michigan. Reading Bissinger's book was amazing. It's hard to believe how crazy people in Texas are over high school football. In Michigan, several sports take center stage at the high school level depending upon the a ea of the state. For example, a high school hockey playoff game in the Upper Peninsula will draw 4,000 people. But in the cities, high school basketball will draw over 10,000 for a regular season game at times! Football is big in the suburbs and in the small towns. Some crowds are quite large (around 10,000) but nothing like Texas. High school sports in Michigan are big, but one isn't focused on heavily like in Texas.

I'm just reading reading Friday Night Lights for the second time and is still strikes home. THe contrast between the support High School footlball gets in the US and schoolboy Rugby which I played in the UK is amazing. Its not that we weren't tough, no ads in Rugby remember, but from what I remember it was good hard fun and at the end of the day it was a game and a beer at the end with the opponents was and remains part of the ritual of rugby. For Permian, Midland and the rest winning is the only thing and they have a rpoud record to prove it but I cannot help feeing that something has been lost along the way. Comments welcome

I read "Friday Night Lights" and I think it was if not one of the greatest books I've ever read. I was amazed by the great rivalry between PHS and Lee. In Indpls. my school had a great rivalry between Roncalli (my school) and the Cathedral Irish. A yea ago the schools cancelled that rivalry. They said it was too scary. It was nothing to your rivalries. Roncalli should play against Permain, you don't stand a chance.

I have to give credit where credit is due, I must admit that Permian was the LEAST favorite team of mine in 1980, but that is because they beat us poor Yellow Jackets from Port Arthur in 1980 in Texas Stadium 19-28, and that was a heart breaking loss to u Southeast Texans, let alone the Port Arthur area, whom today still I believe has not been the same since then. I was in the middle of the book "Friday Night Lights" (Chapter 7 sitting open on the table beside me, and I had to surf the net to find out what was happening there today. I played football in college from 2 guys from Texas (Dallas and Houston), and they would tell me how they routinely put 7-8 thousand screaming fans in the stands, played home games in a dome (in highschool), and played playoff games until the week before Christmas. I thought, 'surely they're lying!' Somehow, I could not fathom how, as they said it, football was a religion in Texas. Well, reading the book (and now the guestbook)I can see that although it is almost sureal, it was--is--all true. Although some things that go on there are appaling (assuming that Bissinger did not take any liberties--which he almost assuredly did), I can only be jealous of the fervent loyalty and tradition that is present there. I played 7 years of highschool and college football. . .I think any players dream is to be apart of something like that--to compe e for something that means that much to those involved. Here in St. Louis, when we pack a stadium to overflowing with 5,000 fans and casual observers from all over the city, we feel that it must be the pinnacle of the career of the schoolboy players invo ved to be on that field in front of that crowd. But to play in front of 20,000+?

I thought I'd share with all that I responded to Starkeyman's comments. If he didn't want correspondence he shouldn't have left his email address. I wasn't rude but I responded out of the emotions that he meant for Permian fans to have when he wrote wha he did. He wrote me back and I responded to that (out of emotion again). I thought about it and decided that I should apologize (even though I really wasn't rude... but I should have been more tactful... basically I said he was gullible to believe the ies) So on December 1st I wrote a note and apologized for responding out of emotion and not thinking about what I wanted to say before I wrote. I entitled the subject "Hot Head" ... meaning me.... well, guess what? On December 2nd I got a note saying h would file HARASSMENT charges against me if I ever wrote him again. What's the world coming to? This person came to my guestbook... wrote something he KNEW would be emotional and controversial... LEFT HIS EMAIL address because he probably WANTED emails .. and then when I write and apologize I get a threat of suit AFTER my apology. Wow! Hi, as many of those who left their comments in this Guestbook I read "Friday Night Lights" , I bought it in Florida in 1994 when I was on vacation there. For someone from outside the U.S. it gives You some sort of the american feeling. I've played footba l myself here in Germany as a Linebacker and I really miss the time ot with my guys since I had to stop playing football. I really like this site and I'll check back more often!

Very impressed with your permian AND your personal web pages. I was going to vent about permian running up the score Friday night, but then I read one of your fans description of the '98 Temple-Permian game. I was at that game and didn't notice all the nsportsmanlike activity that he saw, but my opinion might not be as objective as his. If the Permian team and coaching staff felt the way he did, then I can certainly see them wanting to rub it in a little bit. I will say this about the Temple program. Coach McQueen has been here 27 yrs. and I've noticed that recently his teams have not been as disciplined as they have been in the past. I don't know if his age is keeping him from relating to our young men or what, but I have seen that as a problem. Th s is his last year and I hate to see him leave after the success he has brought our program, but it might be time to move on...

I read Friday night lights (as did everyone on this website by the looks of it). Excellent book and I can't wait to see that town. My cousin's football team adopted the MOJO magic theme during his sophomore year after the entire team read that book. Th y made it to the Nebraska class C-2 finals before losing by a touchdown. I thought that the MOJO stuff all around their field was pretty insane considering I didn't know what it meant. After reading that some drunk guys yelled it out at a game in the 60 s (?), I thought that was funny. Well, great web page and good luck in football this year.

To Mike, The "Mesquite Skeeters"? Talk about unknown. Talk trash when you have something to back it up with. I lived in Dallas for several years and at least I have heard of Allen. To all other Permian fans don't worry so much. Permian will be alright. Don't o to blaming the coaches. It's not like they are playing all El Paso teams (Midland Lee). Allen, Amarillo, and Temple are three quality teams, so settle down.

I am a 1989 graduate of Permian High and I think the page is great. I do have one request. Blair Kemp mentioned his sister Nicole who was killed in 1989. I went to school with Nicole and would also like to see her name in the memory section. Also, the names Travis Huckaby and Shane Stanfield should be there as well. Travis was killed in 1989 the weekend we played Marshall in the semi-finals. Shane was killed sometime that next year.The page is great! I remember the 1986 football game in Odessa. I was a junior on the Bobcat football team and it was the first time in over 10 years that the Bobcats defeated mojo. I will never forget the game and I know that many Central Bobcat alumni from the classes of 87,'88,'89 will ever forget that game. We were probably the best football team in the state that year. I know that if we had overtime that year like they do now we would have won state. Instead we lost on penetrations 4-3 in the Regional football game. The 14-7 defeat over Mojo was like winning the texas lottery for the people who were a part of the program. To this day I watch the game at least once a year during the football season. Don't get me wrong I think the Panther program is above all the gr atest and I will never forget the great memories of West Texas High School Football in the 1980's.

My idea of MOJO is that it is a spirit, a common bond uniting a school, a team and a community. This common bond continues with you all through life and is rekindled any time you meet a "Kindred Spirit". It is more than a feeling, it is a Love for all t at is good and honorable.

Don't get me wrong, I find this sight to be one of the best Mojo sights as well as HS websites around. Every time I'm on the internet I find myself coming back here to look up something else about Mojo football. Permian was and still is a great team. I have watched them play for many years. My brother, Chuck Fields, was on the team when they won state against Baytown in 1972. I watch stories about Friday Night Lights on ESPN and was able to see Don Billingsley interviewed. Was with his parents when they got married. Hadn't seen Don since he was 3. It has always been a way of life,Mojo football when Sept.arrives it is time to make that commitment to excellence that has always been looked on as Odessa Permian Football..Although the team is seen here in this area very infrequently except for playoffs nd such which I might add is also expected I might add that black and white is tradition at its highest and win or lose (let's forget about lose) Odessa Permian Football is by all means what every football program in Texas and for that matter the nation i measured against. And to me the thrill is not just watching them win but to see that team come under those goalposts as they enter the field....I could only imagine what it would be like to see them in their own home....football has always been a traditi n in Texas but Odessa Permian Football is what put Texas Football on the map and I don't think we could have it any other way...

I can vividly remember the first Pep rally for all students leaving Odessa High School for a new high school called Permian. What a thrill to vote for our colors BLACK AND WHITE and our mascot the mighty PANTHER. At least 300 guys showed up for the first ootball practice. A spirit was born that year that has been nurtured, added to (the class of `65 and their MOJO STICKS,etc. It,s great to be a part of that tradition. I have travelled all over the world and experienced many of lifes ups and downs but I ha e never forgotten my West Texas Roots. Permian graduates have died on foreign soil, become doctors, lawyers, teachers and maybe even an Indian Chief! Always the Panther Tradition binds us to a unique area- West Texas.Permian was born at that Rally in the uditorium at Odessa High School Don't let your traditions die. It's only fair to say that Permian is known nation wide. When I was stationed in Virginia I saw cars displaying MOJO bumper stickers. However, we all seem to forget that there are two High Schools in town and that each and every one of us should support the team that makes it to the playoffs, regardless of which one it is. If they play each other then, by all means, support your favorite, but after that support the winner all the way through the rest of their season. It looks good for Odessa when eithe one of them does good and as much as I'm proud to be a Permian graduate, I'm even prouder of the fact that I'm a Texan from a damned fine town called Odessa.

A true sportsman and supporter of a school does not do so by belittlin another school and the people that go there... They do so by building up their own! yes, odessa has a great history. but the greatest in the nation? no. that belongs to massillon washington high school, winner of 23 ohio state titles. they have produced such people as earle bruce, paul brown, and most recently, chris speilman. and t en there's always the canton mckinley bulldogs, winners of back-to-back big school ohio state titles in 1997 and 1998. they were also the 1997 national champs in many publications, noteably USA today. permian does have rich tradition, but it will never e as rich as is found in northeast ohio, the birth place of the nfl and home to the pro football hall of fame.

I've got to tell you, this is a wonderful website. You've done a fantastic job! I was a former football player until I had to quit my senior season due to academics. To get into Notre Dame, I needed a near perfect score my fall season. It really was a coincidence that I went to such a powerhouse college also. My wife and I now eat an breath football, both HS and college. Thank goodness I've attended such great traditions. I'm depressed at the moment since both Permian and Notre Dame just ended their seasons with a loss. I was dying to see a matchup against Converse Judson - another g eat HS football program. It's been said many times that they built their program to simulate Permian's as closely as possible. Good luck to them in the upcoming state game. By the way, Friday Night Light's was written my senior year, and those guys were some of my closest friends. A huge portion of that book was so completely unfair, biased, assumptive and impersonal. It's a pity some people read it and assume that it is cor ect in its portayal of Odessa. I sure do miss home.

people here like to compare converse judson with permian. there is no comparison. there are many facts about judson those band wagoners won't tell you. in the first place judson isn't one high school. it's two. second, is, judson gets their players from e erywhere. they normally bend the rules. if that doesn't work, they will break them. saying anyone there is moral is like saying god and the devil are buds. it isn't accidental they are up there every year, it makes me wonder how anyone ever beats them at ll. they are classless. and that is one place everyone else has them beat. the panthers are the greatest. they do it with their own kids.

Wow!! you are some popular woman for having this website. Great Job! I'm glad that there are people we Odessans can count on to having PERMIAN on the NET!!! That trip down memory lane gave me the chills. I miss Odessa. I went to Permian in 95 and 96. I was a Mojo Peppette in 95 (the year we went to STATE!!!) In 96 i was on the Permian JV Gymnastics team. Ohh by the way, I believe it was Aaron Adame who won Gymnastics Nationals in 96! Well, the story changed and I went to Odessa High along with Coac Quinsenberry, in 97. ( the year OHS won) And youre right. It takes a Panther to beat a Panther. But not anymore. PHS won!!!!!!!! whoo hooo!!!!! Now I'm at UT El Paso. When i hear Odessa Permian at the local football games announcement, I get the chi ls. Because I know that the undefeated teams in Texas FEAR PERMIAN!!! And I love the thought of the other teams are all hipped up, enjoying their season, but when its time to play Permian, Permian just goes, does its winning thing, kills their streak. They find it hard to believe that a city would build a stadium like they did for the High Schools and support their schools like Odessa does. They admire the team spirit that comes from Odessa and across he country. KEEP IT UP MOJO!!!

I seen on fox sports sw that coach mayes was under some controversy last year, is he really good of a coach. I guess you can call me a Permian Panther to the end. I do not know if the first word out of my mouth was "MOJO" or "Touchdown." But, when I was lucky enough to speak those two words together, it came out "MOJO TOUCHDOWN." Which is a term I THINK I hav heard just a few times. My Permian history runs deep. My father (Michael Daniel Payte Sr.) was either the first All-American or the first All-State player to come from Permian. For some reason, I never can remember which. He passed away in 1978 when I was five, so we didn't g t a chance to talk about his football days too much. My brother was a trainer for the football team. My sister was a pepette. My bother-in-law was a member of the 1980 State Champs. And I was a member of the 1989 National Champion Permian High School ootball-------Marching Band. I would have done anything to have played football, but since I am only 3'6"---my options were limited. My disability limited my football career (which consisted of one flag-football game in grade school) but I found a way t be a part of the game. I cannot remember a time more EXCITING than being out on that field playing "Hawaii 5-0" on the drums in front of the Permian Fans. To this day, I have not been as proud to be part of an organization as I was to have been and still be a part of the Permi n High School family. It is amazing to me how powerful a communities PRIDE in their high school can be. Win or loss---Permian still has its PRIDE. And this webpage is a perfect example of that pride. Nice Job. I guess all that there is left to say is ---ummmm-----what letter would it begin with. I can hear the roar now. MOJO

to everyone who has found the time to degrade mojo i'm sorry that you couldnt be part of a great tradition yourself.i know MOJO doesnt mean anything to you but its not suppose to because you wernt part of it. most criticism comes from jealousy.maybe we b at at some time or another but dont take it personal because we held no special grudge against you. it is appalling at how many peole there are that try to critise many years of hard work, it actually hurts. next time think about something that means alot to you, then think of how it would feel to have people from all over try and tear it down.i would also challenge anyone who says they know of a more storied program to e-mail and let me know about it. let me know how people from all over the world seem t hear about MOJO but i havnt heard of programs from anywhere else.i thank all the people who congradulate us panthers for our successful program even though all you have done is read a book. it brings tears to my eyes to read the compliments of something hat i was part of.nobody forgets their years of high school, that final step to adulthood that molds so much of our character, this rings true even if your times were bad or you wernt a good student or athlete. success is being happy with your accomplishm nts and never giving up on achieving higher goals. education doesnt always have to do with this , just a burning sensation to always do better.
