Gymnastics Vocabulary
I know that any of you people who don't follow gymnastics all the time, will probably not know what I'm talking about, when I mention a certain skill. So that is why I made a vocabulary page. This page, should tell you what some common skills are, and what some words that gymnasts say mean.
Ariel: is a cartweel with no hands. It is when a gymnast hurdles of of one foot, and lands on one foor again.
Barani: is a front flip with a half twist. When a gymnast does one, they almost look like they are doing a round-off with no hands.
Backhandspring: is a move, usually done out of a round-off on floor, where the gymnast jumps backward, lands on her hands in a handstand, and then pops down back on to her feet. It sounds harder then it looks!
Cast: is one skill that is first learned on the uneven, and horizontal bar. When a gymnast is in a front support on the bar, they kick their legs out from under them, and then come back to the bar.
Cartweel: is a skill done on the beam and floor, where the gymnast puts her hands down, on the ground, splits in the air, and then puts her feet back on the ground in a forward motion
Dismount: is a move done at the end of a routine. For example, on the bars, a person could do a fly-away dismount.
Giants: are swings around the bar with the body perfectly straight. It is often the skill before a release move or dismount.
Handstand: is a skill where a gymnast "stands on his/her hands", with nothing else touching the floor.
Hurdle: a run, or a step to position the feet for take-off done in the beginning of a move.
Mount: is the first skill(s) of a routine.
Pike: is a position where the gymnasts' legs are straight, and the body is bent foreward as much as possible. In flips, or saltos the gymnast grabs underneath his/her legs to keep them close to his/her chest.
Round-off: is like a cartwheel, except you pop off your hands, and land on two feet. A round-off backhandspring is often the beginning skills in a tumbling line.
"Stuck" Landing: is when a gymnast completes a move, and finishs the move without talking any extra steps.
Tuck: is the position in which your knees are really close to your chest, and your arms are around them, holding them there.
Tumbling Line: is a line in which three or more skills are performed in succession, with a run before for power.
