Packers and Bills blame refs; Cardinals surprise Cowboys

Wild Card Games
In a season when referees have blown so many calls, two wild card games had some questionable calls that could have changed the outcome of those games.

On Saturday, the Bills visited the Dolphins in the first wild card game of the season. Some wild plays happened early on, as Buffalo fumbled the ball in the game's first scrimmage play. Miami, though, couldn't convert those chances into many points, as only 3 points came off turnovers in the first half. The Bills led 7-6 at halftime, missing a huge chance to have an even bigger lead when Doug Flutie had a pass intercepted at the Miami 1-yard line.

The game got even more strange into the second half. When Buffalo trailed the Dolphins by 10, WR Andre Reed caught a slant in pass and was taken down at the goal line. Officials said he was down at the one yard line, but Reed disagreed and bumped into the line judge, costing the team 15 yards and being ejected from the game. Replays showed it appeared to be a TD by Reed. The Bills ended up kicking a FG and eventually lost the game, 24-17.

But an even bigger mistake by officials took place on Sunday. The Packers led the 49ers by four with the game on the line. San Francisco was trying to make a game winning drive when WR Jerry Rice caught a pass down the middle - his first catch in the whole game - and cleary had the ball stripped after gaining six yards - a would be fumble. But officials said Rice was down. Replays showed Rice fumbling the ball clearly before his knees touched the ground. A few plays later, Steve Young hit Terrell Owens for the game winning TD.

On the bright side of the weekend, the Cardinals had a strong performance on both sides of the field - offense and defense - to pull an upset over heavily favored Dallas on Saturday, giving them a chance to face the Minnesota Vikings next weekend. The Atlanta Falcons will play host against the divisional rival 49ers.

In the AFC, while the Dolphins will travel to Denver, the New York Jets will face the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags defeated the Patriots on Sunday with a huge game by RB Fred Taylor, the rookie who would be named offensive rookie of the year if it wasn't for Randy Moss (Taylor finished second in the pool).
