Justice at last: 49ers and Dolphins out of the playoffs; Vikings still impressive

Divisonal Games
After a controversial Wild Card Weekend, the NFL Divisional Games put the teams back were they belong. Both the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers, who last week won their games with some very questionable calls from the officials, were defeated this week.

The Denver Broncos rolled over the Dolphins, showing they really have a very powerful offense and a good defense, too. Miami scored only a Field Goal in the whole game - and no touchdowns. The loss puts even more pressure in QB Dan Marino, who is now at a very risky position: he may retire without that elusive Super Bowl ring he so badly wants.

RB Terrell Davis found so many roles in the Miami Defense (playing without two key Defensive Linemans) that is was almost unfair. He finished with 199 yards. Elway also bounced back from his poor performance earlier at Miami in the regular season.

In a key NFC Divisional Matchup, the Atlanta Falcons welcomed back coach Dan Reeves to the sidelines with a 20-18 victory over their biggest rival, the San Francisco 49ers. Once again, RB Jamal Anderson played huge for the Falcons, scoring two touchdowns. The Niners suffered a key injury in the first play from scrimmage, as Garrison Hearst broke his leg after a run. San Francisco even got another huge help from referees in this game, when a fumble return for a TD by the Falcons Defense was taken back on a dubious call. QB Steve Young couldn't engineer another miracle, as he played poorly, throwing some key INT's in the second half.

On Sunday, the New York Jets kept impressing everyone on their blasting victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, 34-24. RB Curtis Martin and WR Keyshawn Johnson each scored twice, and the Jets Defense played very well against Mark Brunell and the powerful Jaguars' ground game led by rookie RB Fred Taylor. The Jaguars blew away some key chances in the game, one in a fumble return that ended in a fumble the other way (recovered by Keyshawn Johnson) and a late INT in the endzone, when rookie Donovin Darius tried to return it and was downed at the Jaguars 1, instead of keeping the ball and getting a touchback.

The last NFC game was a powerful performance by the Minnesota Vikings, beating the Arizona Cardinals, 41-21. QB Randall Cunningham threw for three touchdowns and RB Leroy Hoard caught one and run for another TD, as the Vikings never gave Jake Plummer and the Cardinals a chance in the game. Plummer was very erratic, throwing 2 INT's and fumbling once.

The Vikings will host the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game, while the Jets will travel to Denver in the AFC Championship Game, both to be played on Sunday, January 17th.
