Today's Topic:  The French.

The French have this reputation of being nasty and stuck up towards Americans.   Some might say that they dislike us even though we bailed their sorry butts out a couple of times while they were getting pasted by the Germans.  They did give us French Fries and French Toast, so I'll cut them a bit of slack.

We also know that the French language is backwards, but when they translate this stuff to English I expect them to get it right.  I mean people could get hurt.  Is this the intention of the French to take out a few stupid Americans when nobody is looking?

What am I talking about you say and what the hell does this have to do with biking?   Well, any of you who have riden on the Tuesday night training ride might have noticed that several times this year, I have pulled out of my pedal on a sprint.   This was extremely frustrating and cost me a little bit of pride.  So each week it was off to the basement to crank up the tension a little bit.

Now according to the diagram above from the LOOK manual, (-) means MORE tension.   The silly American that I am, figured that this is another instance of the French doing things backwards and followed the directions.  Imagine my surprise when after a few weeks I began popping out with more regularity.  I was secretly hoping that it was because I was becoming a MONSTER sprinter and nothing could hold me in.

After popping out one to many times and almost drifting into an oncoming vehicle (Thanks Chris for screaming!), I did some testing and this pedal could not hold me in.   After some consultation with Bob at Pedal Power we determined that the directions are @$#@%$ed up.  I believe that it is a conspiracy by the French to undermine American cyclists before they have a chance to win their Tour.  With the emergence of Lance Armstrong, Bobby Julich and a number of strong young yanks, we are poised to kick their rear ends and they will not stand for it.  So Bobby and Lance be careful out there and steer clear of the French components.
