SPORTSMAN'S PARK
Sportsman's Park was located at Grand and Dodier in St. Louis. It was owned by the St. Louis Browns until they moved to Baltimore to become the Orioles. The Cardinals were their grateful tenants, and the Cards were the ones who brought more World Series action to the place. The only Series action the Brownies ever saw was in 1944, when they played their tenant Cardinals. The Redbirds beat the Brownies in what was one of only three World Series played all in one ballpark (see Yankees and Giants history for those stories).
When Gussie Busch bought the Cardinals to keep them in St. Louis, Sportsman's Park would be renamed Busch Stadium. The Cardinals moved into the present Busch Stadium in 1966. The Herbert Hoover Boys’ Club, with a baseball diamond where the major league one used to be, now stands on the site of the stadium.
You can find more on Sportsman's Park by clicking any of the links below. By the way, the photo above was found at Ballparks by Munsey and Suppes, and I would like to thank them. As a devoted Cards fan, I had searched a long time to find it. I never saw a game at Sportsman's Park; I was only 3 years old when the Cards moved to the "new" stadium.
