23rd
September 1998 from Goodison Park
Everton 2 Huddersfield 1
Dacourt 29, Materazzi 42 Stewart
1
Everton's Italian import Marco Materazzi scored the winner and was sent off. But Everton survived a late Huddersfield onslaught to clinch a 2-1 Worthington League Cup victory. Italian Materazzi backhealed his new clucb into a lead it never relinquished after 42 minutes but was sent off 20 minutes before time in the explosive tie. The Blues showed a real character to book their place in the third round, with Olivier Dacourt inspiring them. The Frenchman, the best player on the field by a mile scored Everton's equaliser and the first goal at home this season after Farrelly's goal in the last season's finale against Coventry and the goal Dacourt scored came after 382 minutes of football in also in a fantastic fashion. Sam Collins tripped Don Hutchison 25 metres out and so ofter this season we have seen Dacourt coming close with these freekick and it was due he scored. Dacourt curled the ball beyond Nico Vaesen in the 29th minute and the 18,000 fans went estactic. The strike like Materazzi's was his first for the club and it was the equaliser after Marcus Stewart had given Huddersfiled the lead after just 42! seconds and that too created by our ex-star Barry Horne. Huddersfield had a number of chances to score the equaliser after Materazzi's departure but just could not. Unsworth had to clear the ball of the line once. Dacourt was book again in this match and that is his 4th yellow card and alreadt 1 red card he better watch where his legs are. Maybe it was just Everton's night and not like previous seasons they finally progress to the next round and beating Huddersfield can be accomplished as a good result because Huddersfield are the leaders in the first division.
