August 3, 1998 - Indiana Dunes State Park Campground - DonaldsonDISTANCE TRAVELED: 46.49 MilesTIME: 4 Hours 30 Minutes AVERAGE SPEED: 17.0 Miles/Hour TRAVEL CONDITIONS: Hot and humid with a light almost foggy cloudcover. A medium headwind all day. ROAD CONDITIONS: Bad roads for the entire trip. TERRAIN/DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Flat terrian which was very easy to bike. DAILY JOURNAL COMMENTS: I woke up at 9:30 after sleeping through the commotion of many other people talking and getting ready for the day. I packed up everything I could inside of my tent and put on my biking clothes before getting out to get some breakfast. I ate some Apple Jacks which filled me up for a little while and then took down my tent which fortunately was completely dry. I was almost ready to leave when I found out that I was on host cleanup. Fortunately, Brad wasn’t ready so he did my job for me. The cooking the night before paid off after all. I filled up my water, made some lunch, and wrote down the directions for the day. I left around 10:30 with Tom and Abigail and we rode together for about 20 miles before we had to stop since I got a flat. It was my third one and even though I patched it instead of putting in a new one, it was done very quickly. We left again and about 5 miles later I had to stop again. This time it was for food. Tom and Abigail continued on and I stopped to get a drink, candy, and eat my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I left about 20 minutes later and saw David and Jen just a little ahead. They were looking at the map and had evidently left about 45 minutes before me and had gone ten miles out of the way. I rode with them for 12 miles until we caught back up to Tom and Abigail. I was going about 22 miles an hour with them and as soon as we caught up with Tom and Abigail, I slowed down to about 17. David and Jen passed by and about a mile later David had to stop since he got a second flat for the day. We rode on until we were about 6 miles from our destination and Abigail had to stop to change her tire. Tom and I continued on and quickly came to the place where we were to stay at 3:00.(Picture88) There was food waiting for us so we ate and then took some showers. After the shower, I ate some more and then typed some things up before talking to some of the people whom we were staying with. Around 6:30 we ate some dinner which consisted of vegi burgers, corn, fruit, pasta, and tea or soda. After eating, we talked to our hosts before eating some more and then going to sleep around 11:30. I was going to sleep outside but there were too many bugs to do so. TRIP ROUTE: 49 to E on 30. Right off of 30 on Union Rd. Go pas Post office and vacant stores. Around college and convent.
