August 8, 1998 - Columbus - McArthurDISTANCE TRAVELED: 0 MilesTIME: 0 Hours AVERAGE SPEED: 0 Miles/Hour TRAVEL CONDITIONS: Very hot and muggy all day long. Once again, we had sun. ROAD CONDITIONS: Mostly good roads with some good shoulders. TERRAIN/DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Small rolling hills that were fairly easy to get over. DAILY JOURNAL COMMENTS: I woke up at 9:30 and felt very good for only having 7 hours of sleep. My feet hurt just as much as before so after figuring out whether I could get into the SAG for the day, I packed up. I then traded with David for host clean-up since he wanted to leave. After cleaning up, Pinky, Anthony, and I got in the SAG and drove to the nearest bike shop. I was hoping that they would have some SIDI shoes so that my feet might not hurt so much after the next long day. Unfortunately they didn't have them so after picking up two tubes, I went to one other store. They had just what I was looking for but they weren't the right size. They did have some Shimano shoes so I tried them on but since my feet are so narrow, they slipped off of my feet. So we left this shop and went to a local co-op to get some food. They donated a large amount and we then bought some other necessities for burritos which we got 10 percent off of. Anthony went back to the first bike shop and bought some tires and then got 21 patch kits for free. After driving back to pick us up, we rode to a local supermarket to pick up a few more things that we couldn't get before. I was able to get a strawberry kiwi sorbet along with salami and IBC cream soda. It was great to have meat for lunch! After eating I realized that I no longer had my sunglasses. I went back to the second bike shop where I thought that I had left them but was unsuccessful. I called the co-op and fortunately I had left them there so I went back and picked them up. Finally we were ready to leave Columbus so we drove out at 4:00. We passed by five people about 8 miles out of McArthur and finally arrived around 6:00. We met a few of the riders who were on the San Francisco route and then unloaded the SAG. The first thing that we noticed was how all of their food was in one neat pile along with their gear. We immediately got into the SAG and literally threw gear out onto the cement in a huge pile. After this, we pulled out the food having half of it fall out the door as we opened it! After this was finished, I fixed my flat tire and then started to talk to some of the other riders. After going down to a local gas station for a ice pop and a Hawian Punch with Matt, I typed on my computer for a while and then waited for dinner to be ready. Around 8:00, an hour late for the San Francisco route's schedule, we ate burritos and rice. Finally we had some meat in the food that we made. After eating, Matt, Tom, and I went back to the gas station where I bought a package of Starburst, some Hostes cup cakes, and a Skor bar. I ate it all in about 30 minutes and then talked to David of the San Francisco route. We talked about what each other's groups were like and how orderly his was compared to mine! After this, I typed on my computer for a little while longer before going to bed around 3:30. TRIP ROUTE: Take High Street south which will connect with 23. Follow and get onto 50 East. Travel into McArthur. |
