In the Grip of the Grape

My friends and I loved to go camping. At the tender age of eleven, I had mastered the art of pegging a tent. However, should nature call when you're out in the wild, you have to use whatever accommodations are handy. Especially at night. On one camping trip we all had a big argument with Brian Hammond about how far away from the tent we should be to use the "restroom". It was a matter of honour. You were supposed to take your toilet paper and go out in the bush somewhere. We knew that if you could still touch a tent flap, you weren't far enough away. But not Brian.

"Oh, bloody hell, Brian! We gotta sleep here you idiot!"

Other than that, Brian was the king of outdoor hygiene. I've always admired him for that, and for sharing his wisdom. If you forgot your toilet paper, he knew which leaves made the best substitutes, which had a nice texture, and which were poisonous. The stories of how he acquired that knowledge would make your skin crawl.

Bowen never listened to Brian, or learned from him. Before I left the house, the last thing I always did was grab a roll of loo paper and stick it in my backpack. Bowen, for some reason, never grasped this concept. When we were camping, we could leave Bowen to watch the campsite and come back an hour later and he'd be wearing a shirt with only one sleeve. We knew the answer even before we asked the question.

"Oh mate, I had to go bad."
"But that shirt cost thirty dollars! Toilet paper is like thirty cents, you moron."

I've never been crazy about fishing. But my father used to fish with my grandfather, and both of them used to fish with me. If I'm ever lucky enough to become a father, I'd like to go fishing with my kids. Just to carry on the tradition, I guess.

A number of years ago I learned that you can get goldfish out of an aquarium using a Dustbuster. That's the most efficient fish-catching device I've ever seen! Next time I go fishing, I'm taking an Aqua Vac. Not only will we catch out limit, but we'll leave the outdoors just a little cleaner than we found it.
