In the first game of the 1998-1999 season, Tigerton shot only 21% from the floor through the first three quarters as they fell behind the Marion Mustangs 35-21 before eventually falling, 48-40.
Tigerton was able to hang with the Mustangs in the first quarter, tying the score at 6-6 when Nick Desrochers hit a three-pointer while being fouled. The extra free throw to give the Tigers the lead was no good, and Marion went on a 23-10 run to give them a 29-16 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Tigers' defense improved, holding the Mustangs to just 2-of-13 shooting from the floor in the third quarter. The offense did not get started, however, and Marion led going into the final quarter, 35-21.
The Tigers offense finally got going in the fourth. After a pair of baskets by Jason Littlefield, the Tigers got as close as they would get, 43-37. Marion was able to hit the critical free throws down the stretch to preserve their opening game victory over Tigerton.
Desrochers led the Tigers with 23 points, while Marion was paced by Brad Suering with 10 points. Tigerton's next game, the CWC Small Conference opener, is at home on Friday, December 4 against the Wild Rose Wildcats.
