#10. Tigerton 62, Bowler 55 (February 17, 1998) @Bowler, WI

This game was personally exciting for me because it was the only time the team was able to win in Bowler, making it a special occasion to me.

Bowler jumped out to a 19-13 lead after the first period as Nikk Brei scored nine points and Tigerton's Nick Desrochers was held scoreless by the Panthers defense, who had keyed on him. However, Desrochers scored seven in the second period and Jason Littlefield contributed six points as Tigerton took a 34-24 halftime lead, outscoring Bowler 21-5. In the second half, Desrochers scored 12 points to lead the Tigers. Bowler mounted a fierce comeback in the final minutes, but the Tigers held on for the 62-55 win.

The game was the final victory of the 1997-98 season, giving the Tigers their best regular season mark of 7-13. They would lose the final two regular season games and the first regional game- ironically in Bowler- to end the season at 7-14.

#9. Tigerton 61, Marion 56 (OT)(December 2, 1997) @Marion, WI

In the opening game of the 1997-98 season, Tigerton traveled to Marion for the first boys basketball game played in the new Marion Fieldhouse.

The Tigers started out slowly, and fell behind the Mustangs, 13-6 after the first quarter. Jason Littlefield fueled the THS comeback in the 2nd, scoring 12 points. Tigerton led at the half, 26-22.

In the 3rd, the two teams traded scores, and by the end of the period Marion had reclaimed the lead, 41-39. The Mustangs opened the 4th with an 8-2 run, taking a 49-41 lead with 5:05 to play. With 3:17 left and Marion leading 51-43, a technical foul against the Mustangs and the subsequent free throws by Nick Desrochers cut the lead to 51-45. The teams traded baskets and with 2:30 to play, Marion led 53-47.

With 1:50 to play, Matt Egbert scored to cut the lead to 53-49. Desrochers scored off a steal to make the score 53-51 with 1:30 to play. After a Marion turnover, Tigerton ran their offense until they called a timeout with :42 remaining. With :14 left, Littlefield scored the tying basket, which bounced off the front of the rim, off the backboard, and through. Marion was unable to score, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Desrochers scored six of Tigerton's eight points (6-of-6 from the free throw line) while Marion shot only 3-of-8 from the line. Tigerton won, 61-56. This was the only time Tigerton would open a season at 1-0 through the four year period, making it the only time they had a winning record.

#8. Tigerton 62, Gillett 57 (December 22, 1998) @Tigerton, WI

Nick Desrochers led the Tigers with 42 points, but contributions from Jamie Wudstrack and Jason Breaker were critical in Tigerton's non-conference 62-57 win over the Gillett Tigers. The Tigers, short-handed because of suspensions to Jason Littlefield and Matt Schoening, were jumpstarted by Desrochers' hot-hand in the first quarter. Desrochers scored 14 of the Tigers' 17 first quarter points as Tigerton built a 15-5 lead before Gillett closed to within six after one period, 17-11.

Gillett was able to take a 19-17 lead in the second quarter, but Jamie Wudstrack came off the bench to get the Tigers' offense going again by hitting a three-pointer, his first points of the season. Desrochers got going again, and Tigerton was able to take a 34-25 halftime advantage.

Gillett was able to make a run in the third with three three-pointers by their leading scorer, Erik Lueckfeld, to cut the lead to 48-44 going into the fourth quarter. But Desrochers would not be stopped, scoring the first twelve points for his team in the quarter.

Nevertheless, Gillett was able to get within three points at 60-57 with :40 to play. Desrochers had a chance to clinch the game at the free throw line, but he was unable to connect. Tigerton's defense held, and Josh Graham hit two critical free throws with :06 remaining to seal the Tigers' third win of the year.

This win evened Tigerton's record at 3-3, and Desrochers' effort caused THS fans to forget Littlefield's departure. The Christmas Break was an optimistic one, but tough times would come as teams double-teamed Desrochers consistently in the second half of the season. Tigerton finished at 5-16 for the year.

#7. Tigerton 49, Tri-County 46 (February 15, 1996) @Tigerton, WI

In a game played on a Thursday night because of an earlier blizzard, the Tigers won their only game of the first season, 49-46 over the Penguins of Tri-County.

The Penguins' night got off to a bad start as their bus lost its way to Tigerton. The game was close throughout, with Tigerton jumping out to an 11-9 lead after the first period. Tigerton's Matt Kurszewski scored six points in the 2nd to lead the Tigers to a 28-24 halftime lead.

The Penguins played well defensively in the 3rd, holding Tigerton to eight points, but the Tigers maintained a tenuous 36-35 advantage. In the 4th, Ryan Breitenfeldt scored seven points to give Tigerton a 49-46 lead with :30 to play.

The Tigers forced a turnover with under :10 left, but Brad Brandt's inbound pass was stolen by the Penguins, giving them a last chance to send the game into overtime. THS fans grimaced as flashbacks of the season opening triple overtime loss to Elcho were seen, but the shot was off the mark, and Tigerton had their lone victory of the season.

#6. Tigerton 47, Tri-County 43 (February 7, 1997) @Plainfield, WI

The Tigers earned their first road victory of the period at the home of the team they fared the best against (a total record of 6-2), the Tri-County Penguins.

The Penguins got off to a good start in the first period as Havin Rehwinkel scored eleven points to give Tri-County a 14-10 advantage. In the second quarter, Tigerton was held to just a single field goal- by Nick Desrochers- and shot 4-of-9 from the free throw line. The Penguins led at halftime, 23-16.

In the second half, the game was called very tightly; a total of 34 fouls were called on the two teams combined (17 apiece). Tigerton shot 14-of-28 from the line while Tri-County shot 16-of-27. Desrochers and Scott Tauferner scored four points in the third to help cut the defecit to 31-29 by the start of the fourth.

In the fourth, Tigerton scored 18 points (11 from the line) while Tri-County was only able to score 12 (10 from the line). The Tigers' defense held the Penguins to only two second half field goals, and clutch free throws from Desrochers and Ryan Hintz helped seal the 47-43 victory. Desrochers led the balanced attack with 13 points, but every player scored for Tigerton.

This was the first of two consecutive road wins, the only time the feat was accomplished in the period. It also began what was likely the best month of the four years, as the Tigers won three of their last five regular season games and advanced to the regional finals.

#5. Tigerton 59, Bowler 49 (March 4, 1997) @Tigerton Regional

The Tigers defeated the rival Panthers to win their first postseason game of the period and advanced to the second round with the 59-49 win.

The game was close early, as the teams battled to a 10-10 tie after the first quarter. Nick Desrochers scored four points to lead Tigerton. Jason Littlefield jumpstarted the Tigers' offense, scoring eight points in the second quarter, but Duane Schreiber's 14 first half points gave Bowler a 28-26 lead at the half.

The third quarter was again very tight, as Bowler edged the Tigers in the quarter, 13-12 behind five more points from Schreiber. Desrochers led Tigerton with four, but they still trailed after three, 41-38. The fourth quarter would be different.

The Tigers played brilliantly with their season in the balance. Defensively, they held Bowler to no field goals and just eight points via free throws. Offensively, Desrochers scored eleven points to help lead the charge. Tigerton outscored Bowler 21-8 in the decisive quarter, winning 59-49. Schreiber and Desrochers led their respective teams with 22 points. The Tigers earned the right to play Wabeno in the second round of the tournament.

#4. Tigerton 48, Almond 45 (December 11, 1998) @Almond, WI

Tigerton jumped out to a big early lead and held on in the fourth quarter to steal a victory from the Eagles in Almond, 48-45.

Randy Tiutczenko scored the first eight points for the Tigers, and they led 8-4 midway through the first period. In the final two minutes of the quarter, Nick Desrochers hit three consecutive three-pointers to give Tigerton a 21-6 lead.

Almond went on a 7-0 run to open the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-13, but Jason Littlefield scored six straight points to increase the Tigers' lead to 27-13. Ryan Neuman hit an amazing half-court shot at the buzzer to give Tigerton a 32-19 halftime advantage.

Desrochers started the third period with four points to give the Tigers their largest lead of the night, 36-19. However, Almond outscored Tigerton through the rest of the period 9-3 to close to 39-28 to start the fourth quarter.

Almond started the quarter on a 12-3 run, closing with a three-pointer by Steve Nickel with 3:23 left in the game to cut the lead to 42-40. After a steal by Trevor Dernbach with 3:00 remaining, Almond's Chad Newby and Dernbach missed possible game-tying shots in transition before Josh Graham fouled out with 2:50.

With 2:00 left in regulation, Tiutczenko scored Tigerton's only field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 44-40 advantage before Almond hit three of four free throws to cut the lead to 44-43 with 1:26 remaining. Littlefield answered by hitting two of his own free throws to increase the lead to 46-43 with 1:02 to play, but Almond's Kent Dernbach converted two free throw attempts to cut the lead back to one at 46-45.

After running off :22, Desrochers was fouled and made one of two free throw attempts with :30 left to make the score 47-45. Kent Dernbach missed a tying shot, and Desrochers was fouled on the rebound with :05 left. He again made one of two free throws to push the lead to 48-45. Nickel missed a tying three-pointer at the buzzer to seal the Tigers' victory.

This was Tigerton's only conference road victory of the season and the only time they defeated Almond-Bancroft during the period. It was the last victory for the duo of Desrochers and Littlefield, as the latter would be kicked off the team after the next game, a loss to Port Edwards.

#3. Tigerton 43, Wabeno 34 (March 6, 1997) @Wabeno, WI Regional Semifinal

Tigerton came back from an early double-digit defecit to defeat the Wabeno Logrollers 43-34 and advanced to the Regional Final against Wausaukee.

Tigerton's offense was nonexistent in the first quarter, as Nick Desrochers scored the team's only field goal of the period. Wabeno came out hot, taking a 13-2 lead after the first quarter.

The tables turned in the second period. Wabeno was held to no field goals (four points on free throws) in the quarter while Tigerton got going with eight points from Desrochers. Wabeno retained a slight lead, 17-14, at halftime.

Both offenses scored in the third, with Tigerton outscoring the Logrollers 15-11 to take the lead going into the fourth quarter, 29-28. In the fourth, Tigerton was held to a single field goal- by Ryan Breitenfeldt. However, they shot 12-of-22 from the free throw line for a total of fourteen points. Wabeno also was held to a single field goal, but were only 4-of-9 from the stripe for a total of six points. Tigerton won going away, 43-34.

Desrochers led all scorers with 19 points. The Tigers qualified for the Regional Final at Wausaukee, which destroyed their first two opponents and was heavily favored to do the same to Tigerton and advance to the sectionals and eventually to state. However, Tigerton played Wausaukee tough before eventually losing; many of their home fans were worried by the lackluster showing of their team. The Rangers would lose their first sectional game.

#2. Tigerton 50, Tri-County 49 (December 19, 1997) @Plainfield, WI

It was early in the 1997-98 season when the Tigers made their annual visit to Plainfield to take on the Penguins. In the first two seasons, the teams had split the games at Tri-County; the Penguins had prevailed in the '95-'96 season and Tigerton had a comeback win in the '96-'97 match (see game #6). With the tandem of Nick Desrochers and Jason Littlefield playing strongly, the Tigers looked to have the advantage, but "that's why they play the games."

The Penguins jumped to an early 6-2 lead. Desrochers picked up his first foul just 1:05 into the contest. Later in the quarter, Ryan Breitenfeldt hit a three-pointer to cut the defecit to 10-9, Tri-County. Twenty seconds later, Matt Egbert hit a long two-pointer to give Tigerton their first lead, 11-10. With 1:09 remaining in the period, Desrochers picked up foul number two, but scored three more points in the quarter to give the Tigers a 14-12 lead after one period.

Just :21 into the quarter, Desrochers was called for his third foul, which caused him to sit out the rest of the half. The Penguins, meanwhile, were in the bonus early and scored eight of their ten second quarter points from the free throw line. The score was tied at the half, 22-22.

Desrochers started the second half for the Tigers, scoring two quick buckets to spark a 6-0 run and a 28-22 Tigerton lead. However, Tri-County answered with a 5-0 run, including a breakaway basket on a sloppy play which resulted in Desrochers' fourth foul with 6:16 to play in the period. With 5:37 to play in the quarter, Desrochers was taken out. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period, and Tigerton held a slim 39-38 advantage going to the fourth.

Desrochers started the final quarter, but picked up his final foul- a questionable call on the offensive end- with 6:27 to play with Tigerton ahead, 41-38. The resulting free throws cut the lead to 41-40. The score remained the same until the 3:08 mark when Josh Graham scored a basket on an offensive rebound to extend the lead to 43-40. However, the Penguins again answered by scoring a three-point play to tie the game at 43-43 with 2:24 to go.

With 2:10 to play, Graham attempted a 1-and-1 free throw but missed. Littlefield rebounded and was fouled- apparently while shooting. However, he missed the first free throw (which was ruled a 1-and-1 by the officials) and the Penguins rebounded. They tried to push the ball upcourt, but it was lost out of bounds. The officials were puzzled, and eventually awarded the ball to Tigerton. The Penguins called a time out, but after this the ball was given back to them with 2:04 to play.

The Penguins' scored a pair of free throws to take a 45-43 lead with 1:28 to play. Breitenfeld answered with two of his own to tie the score with 1:19 remaining. The Penguins scored one of two free throws to take a 46-45 advantage with 1:04 to play. On their ensuing possession, Breitenfeld was called for an offensive foul with :42 left. Tri-County scored two more free throws to lead, 48-45, with :29 to play.

Graham was fouled and converted one of two shots to cut the lead to 48-46 with :24. Tigerton fouled immediately, and the Penguins converted only one of two attempts to lead, 49-46 with only :20 left. Breitenfeld was fouled with :14 to go and converted both free throws to cut the lead to 49-48.

The Penguins quickly inbounded along their own baseline. The player noticed his teammate breaking towards their basket down the court, and made a long pass. However, Graham had baited the throw and intercepted it in his own backcourt. He dribbled to halfcourt while being hacked by Penguin defenders, then passed to Littlefield at the top of the key. He dribbled into the lane to his left, pivoted and turned 180 degrees before releasing the shot, which was good with :02. Tri-County's last full court shot was on line, but no good and Tigerton escaped with a 50-49 victory.

The game gave the team hope for a successful season. They had fallen behind late and came back to win without the services of Desrochers, who played only 4:17 of the final three quarters.

#1. Tigerton 65, Gresham 64 (February 14, 1997) @Gresham, WI

The Tigers earned their second consecutive road victory and their only win against the Gresham Wildcats during the period as they squeaked past the hosts 65-64 on Valentine's night.

Both teams, playing mostly young or inexperienced players, played sloppily throughout the game. The Tigers scored the majority of their points in the paint or from the free throw line, while the Wildcats scored in the same fashion. A putback by Jason Littlefield gave Tigerton a 13-12 lead with 2:50 to go in the first quarter. Gresham scored the next five points to take a 17-13 lead, but Justin Miller answered by scoring the next four points to forge a 17-17 tie. The Wildcats responded to lead 19-17 after one quarter.

The Tigers went on a 10-3 run in the first 4:00 of the second to take a 27-22 lead. The teams traded hoops before Gresham went on an 8-1 run to close the half and take a 34-32 lead.

In the third period, Nick Desrochers scored four consecutive points to tie up the score at 42-42. The Tigers outscored the Wildcats 9-5 in the remainer of the third and led 51-47.

With 2:45 to play in the game, Josh Carlson fouled out and the resulting free throw capped a 12-6 Gresham run to give the Wildcats a 59-57 lead. Ryan Breitenfeld hit a pair of free throws to tie the score with 1:54 to go. Littlefield gave Tigerton a 61-59 lead with a shot from the paint with 1:19. The Wildcats scored a pair of free throws to tie the score at 61-61 with 1:00 to play.

With :55 left, the Tigers turned the ball over. With :33, the Wildcats converted two free throws to take a 63-61 advantage. Desrochers went coast-to-coast and scored on a runner up the lane to tie the score with :21. After another foul, Gresham converted one of two attempts. Trailing 64-63 with :10 left, Desrochers again went coast-to-coast, dribbled to his right, and converted a long jumper to give the Tigers the 65-64 lead. Gresham called time out with :01 left, but the inbound pass was intercepted to seal the 65-64 come from behind win.

Littlefield led all scorers with 25 points while Desrochers scored seven of his thirteen points in the final period. The win was the second straight on the road for Tigerton, and gave them momentum they would convert into two postseason victories as they played perhaps their best basketball of the four years.
