Chapter Ninety

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walking back into the waiting room, Sydney was met by her father again. He immediately rose from where he was seated and went over to where she was standing in the doorway.
Theyre taking her up to a room. Mr. Hudson told his daughter, easily seeing the question in her eyes. The nurse will be by to let you know when you can see her.
Junior is on his way here. Sydney said, not really thinking about what she was saying.
Junior? He questioned. He knew that Kiara was dating Dale Earnhardt Jr., but at the moment, it didnt register that that was who Sydney was speaking of.
Sydney blinked and snapped herself out of the stupor that she was in, knowing that she had to pull herself together if she was going to be able to do what she knew she had to do.
Dale Jr. Sydney clarified with a heavy sigh. She felt absolutely horrible.
Mr. Hudson intently studied his daughter for a few moments, easily seeing the blame that she was still laying on herself. Sydney, He began, wanting to make sure that she knew that she was not at all at fault for what had happened to Kiara and to Brett. His words were stopped when a nurse came into the waiting room.
You may see her for a few minutes. She told the two people before her. Shes pretty groggy yet, but shell be aware of your presence. If youll follow me, Ill take you to her room.
You go on ahead. Ill be there in a little bit. Mr. Hudson stated, automatically knowing that Sydney wanted some time alone with her friend.
Turning to her father, Sydney gave him a small smile as she wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tight. Thank youfor saving Kiara and for being here. You have no idea how much it means to me.
Mr. Hudson pulled back from the hug and smiled softly down at his daughter. Anytime Syd. I just wish that I would have intervened long before it came to this. He paused for a moment, the same guilt that Sydney felt, flowing through him. Go on and see Kiara now. Ill be right here if you need mefor anything. He promised, sincerely meaning every word of it.
Chapter Ninety One
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sydney followed the nurse down the hall, her heart pounding harder with each step that she took. She was scared to death Kiara wouldnt want to see her, or that shed see accusations in her eyesaccusations she knew were justified. But she had to do this.

The nurse smiled at the woman next to her, reading her nervousness. She paused outside Kiaras door and put her hand on Sydneys arm.

Shes going to be fine. She smiled reassuringly. Shes going to be weak for a couple days and her voice is a little scratchy from the breathing tub, but her vitals are excellent, and we dont foresee any kind of problems occurring.

Sydney nodded. So, the tube is out? she asked in a small voice, not knowing if she could walk in there and see her friend needing help breathing by machines.

All gone. Shes doing wonderfully. Now, why dont you go on in.

Sydney took a deep breath to prepare herself then opened the door. Her breath caught in her throat when her eyes touched on Kiara, who had her eyes closed as she rested. She was pale from her ordeal, her hair still wet and looking lifeless. She watched her closely, finally letting out the breath she was holding when she saw the faint, yet steady rise of Kiaras chest.

Kiaras eyes opened when she heard the door shut and she smiled when she saw Sydney standing there staring at her. Hey. She croaked both her and Sydney wincing at the sound of her voice.

Sydney bit her lip as she took a tentative step forward. So far she saw nothing but warmth in Kiaras eyes, but she was preparing herself for that to change.

Hi. She whispered, stepping up to the bed. Tears filled her eyes as she gazed down at her friend, looking so small and frail. Kiara always had such a strong personality and a light about her that made her seem bigger than she really was. Looking at her this way was breaking her heart.

H-how are you feeling? Sydney was unable to keep her voice from wavering. Kiara lifted a shoulder.

Ill be alright. Little tired. Kiara answered, then stared hard at her friend. How are you? she asked, seeing the turmoil in Sydneys eyes.

After all that had happened to her and for Kiara to be more concerned about Sydney, that was her breaking point. The tears poured from her eyes as she all but collapsed in the chair beside the bed.

Im so sorry. She sobbed, feeling like lately she was apologizing to the entire world. I swear I never meant for this to happen! she cried.

I dont blame you for hating me, but I just had to let you know that I love you and I never ever want anything bad to happen to you! If youd d--- she trailed off unable to finish that word. I dont know what I would have done.

Kiara sat up, her own eyes misty as she put her hand on Sydneys. Honey, why on earth would I hate you? I could never hate you. She told her softly, near whispering because of her voice. True, Im not your mothers biggest fan at the moment, but I could never blame you for her actions. Youre just as innocent in all of this as Brett, myself and everyone else involved.

Her voice broke and she was unable to continue as her strained vocal chords gave out on her. But her eyes pleaded with Sydney to believe her.

Sydney shook her head as she stood up. Youre the best person I know, Kiara. I love you and Brett so much, and the thought of my mother hurting either one of you because of me is driving me insane. II have to go. She said softly, her head bowed.

Kiara shook her head frantically. No. she croaked. Please dont.

Sydney gave her a watery smile as she leaned down to hug her best friend tightly. She disentangled herself from Kiaras arms when Kiara tried not to let go, trying everything in her power to get Sydney to stay.

Youll never know how sorry I am. Sydney whispered before turning and hurrying out of the room, knowing that if she had to look in Kiaras eyes one more second, she wouldnt be able to leave.

She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, allowing the tears to flow freely. After a moment she collected herself and straightened up, walking down the hallway, keeping her head down, and feeling as if she really didnt deserve to look anyone in the eyes right now. She knew it would only be a matter of time before her father came to check up on Kiara, and that Dale would be there soon, probably with a few of the other guys, and that she needed to get out of there before anyone tried to stop her.

She glanced back at Kiaras closed door for one final moment, then with a whispered good-bye she turned and walked away.

Chapter Ninety Two

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Much later that night, Dale and Kevin arrived at the hospital. Dale immediately went to the information desk and demanded to know what room Kiara was in. While he did that Kevin spotted Sydneys father as he was leaving after Kiara all but kicked him out, ordering him to go home and get some rest. Neither of them had seen or heard from Sydney since shed talk to Kiara earlier that afternoon and it was becoming painfully apparent that shed left and wasnt coming back. They both still held onto that tiny bit of hope that Sydney would return, but they knew deep down that she wouldnt. At least not until business was taken care of.
What happened? Kevin asked, none of them not having the slightest idea since Sydney had not given any details when shed spoken to Dale.
Mr. Hudson raked his fingers through his hair as he let out a weary sigh. God, what a mess this all wasone that could have been avoided. Joan tried to kill her too by pushing her in the pool. He said tiredly. Incase you dont know, Kiara doesnt know how to swim and the pool cover was on He trailed off, not able to continue. Hed given the same statement to the police at least seven times that day and it never got any easier.
Thankfully she will be okay. Shes resting comfortably now. He paused for a moment before continuing. Thank you for being here. I know that Sydney would be happy to see you. Although Sydney wasnt aware of it, he knew well of the relationship that she and Kevin had in the past and the close friendship that they shared in the present.
Kevin smiled. Even if Brett wouldnt have insisted that I come, Id have been here. I have a feeling that she really needs someone right now and apart from Brett and Kiara, Im one of the only persons that she trusts. I want to be here for her. Kevin said as he looked around for the woman they were talking about.
Where is Syd? Kevin asked, not seeing her around. He figured that she was in with Kiara though.
Again, Mr. Hudson sighed deeply with regret. Shes gone. He said so softly that Kevin had to lean forward to hear him. Shes blaming all of this on herself. Shes full of guilt, anger, hurtand shes hell bent on finding her mother, I think.
Damn! Kevin cursed roughly. Brett was expecting him to call when he and Dale arrived in Tennessee and he was also expecting to talk to Sydney. How the hell was he supposed to tell Brett that she wasnt there? It would send him through the roof for sure.
Any idea where she might have gone? Kevin asked, hoping for some clues to Sydneys whereabouts.
We have several vacation homes. I think that is where Sydney will look for her mother first although I think her mother is much to smart to go to any of thoseit would be too obvious.
Before either of them could say anything more, Dale came over to where they were standing. Im going to head upstairs to see Kiara. Dale told them after introductions were quickly made.
Ill be up after while. Kevin said, pausing a moment before speaking again. Dale, Sydney has left He trailed off, seeing that he didnt need to go any further. Ill have to call Brett and let him know. If there was ever a phone call that he dreaded making, it was the one that he was about to make.
Chapter Ninety Three
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kiara was staring off into space when the door to her room suddenly burst open. She jumped her hand immediately going to her chest as she stared wide-eyed at the door. She relaxed somewhat when she saw Dale standing there.

Jesus Christ are you trying to give me a heart attack? she teased, seeing the seriousness in his eyes, feeling as if she needed to lighten the mood.

Shed been anxious to see him since Mr. Hudson had informed her Dale was on his way, yet at the same time a little apprehensive. She had a feeling she was going to be on the receiving end of that Earnhardt temper she had always tried so hard to avoid.

Dale didnt say anything as he swiftly moved across the room to the bed where he gently and tenderly gathered her into his arms and held on for dear life, tears slipping unnoticed from his eyes.

Tears stung her own eyes as she hugged him back, thankful to have him there, and knew full well who was responsible for getting him there.

Hey, she said softly, pulling back softly to look into his blue eyes. Im okay. She smiled.

Dale shook his head as he gathered her to him once more and just held on, words failing him at the moment. He hadnt missed how scratchy her voice was but at the moment, it was the most beautiful sound in the world.

He finally pulled back and framed her face with her hands as he gazed down at her intently. Unable to stop himself, he leaned forward and kissed her softly. How are you feeling? he asked after he pulled back, his voice gruff. He took both her hands in his, just needing to be in some kind of physical contact with her.

Well, Ill be better once I get out of here, but Im okay. She answered truthfully. Suddenly her eyes went dark with sadness and pain her hands tightening around his. Sydney left. She said softly, her gaze dropping to her lap, a lone tear sliding down her cheek as she bit her lip trying to stop the rest from falling.

Dale closed his eyes for just a moment before taking a deep breath. I know, but dont worry, well find her and bring her back, I promise. He swore, knowing that somehow he would make his promise come true.

Kiara shook her head. You didnt see her a little while ago. She wasdevastated. She whispered.

Dale nodded although he wasnt fully able to imagine what Sydney was going through at the moment. None of them could fully understand the hell Sydney was going through at the moment.

Kiara wiped the tear away as she continued. I know shes been teetering precariously on the edge since Brett was shot, but Im so afraid this will be just what was needed to push her over.

Shell be okay. Dale said reassuringly, Like I said, well find her and everything will be fine.

Kiara gave him a doubtful look but didnt argue. She was quiet for a moment as she looked into his eyes, then her expression turned wary.

Oh go ahead, get it over with. She sighed. Dale tilted his head a little confused. She rolled her eyes. I know its eating away at you to tell me I told you so and to let your temper loose.

Despite all the emotions running through him at the moment, he couldnt help but grin at her words. Ill hold off on that for a little while. Make you wait. Besides, it adds to the suspense. He laughed at the look on her face.

No, Id much rather you go ahead and get it over with. Im prepared now. She countered, a smile tugging at her lips.

No fun in that. He told her. I will tell you this though; youre getting fucking swimming lessons!

Before she could answer, the door to her room opened and her eyes lit up when Kevin walked in. I didnt know you were here! she exclaimed happily, returning the hug he gave her.

How are you feeling, honey? he asked, concern evident in his blue eyes.

Im fine. She answered then caught the looks of disbelief from both men and sighed. Seriously, I am. Little water logged, but fine.

Have you called Brett? Dale asked, judging from the tight expression on Kevins face that he hadnt. Kevin confirmed his suspicions when he shook his head.

Want me to call? Kiara offered, both men looking surprised by her offer. What? she asked. After my brush with death, Im feeling bold and daring! she grinned.

Her grin faded when Dale glared at her, not finding her joke very humorous. Sorry. She mumbled.

Kevin shook his head, a small smile on his lips as he took his cell phone out of his pocket and handed it to Kiara. Here, Im gonna take you up on your offer. Besides, Brett will go easier on you than he would me or Dale.

Kiara nodded as she took a deep breath and punched in the numbers, then listened as the phone started to ring.

Chapter Ninety Four

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey Brett," Kiara greeted when he picked up the phone after four rings. "How ya feeling?" She asked, stalling as long as she could before she would have to completely shatter him by telling him that Sydney had left.
"Shouldn't I be asking you the same thing?" Brett questioned, feeling slightly disappointed that it wasn't Sydney's voice on the other end as he'd been hoping. He quickly pushed that disappointment aside and laughed slightly before he turned serious again. "In all seriousness though, I'm glad that you're okay. I don't know what we would have done if..." Brett's voice trailed off, unable to speak the words. "Especially Dale and Syd. They'd be devastated."
Kiara smiled softly, touched by his words. "Well, it's gonna take a little more than that big bad bitch to keep me down. Although if it wasn't for Syd's father, things might have turned out a little differently. And Dale is demanding that I get swimming lessons." She said as she smiled over at the man that she loved more than anything.
"Her father?" Brett questioned in disbelief. He'd always had a feeling that Mr. Hudson wasn't at all like his wife, but didn't think he'd ever have the balls to stand up to her. He was very thankful that he was right. Before Kiara could respond to his question, he spoke again, asking what he'd been dying to ask since he'd picked up the phone.
"Listen, I am so damn glad that you're going to be fine." He said, his sincerity very obvious. "Put Syd on the phone, please." He said gripping the phone tightly as he waited to hear the sweet sound of her voice.
Kiara closed her eyes as she took in a deep breath. She had been very certain that she would be able to break the news to him, but now she wasn't so sure. "Uh..." She stammered, trying to find the words to break the news to him the easiest. "I can't."
"What? Why?" Brett questioned, doing his best to ignore the panic that was slowly curling around his spine. "Oh, she must be at the hotel getting some rest. Good. I know she's exhausted and needs to sleep. Well, have her give me a call when she gets back."
"Brett...Sydney isn't here. She's gone...she left earlier today. I think that what happened to me was the final straw for her. She's blaming herself for what happened to you and I and feels that the only way to keep us safe is to distance herself from us." Kiara told him as gently as she could. She held her breath, waiting for his reaction.
Chapter Ninety Five
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kiara glanced up at Dale and Kevin, shrugging at their questioning looks. Uh, Brett? she asked when she still heard nothing but silence. She couldnt even hear the sounds of his breathing.

Shes gone. He said, his voice eerily calm. Kiara chewed on her bottom lip, just waiting for him to erupt.

Earlier today. Her father and I did everything we could to get her to stay, but she was determined. We think she hesitated, wondering if she should mention this, but then decided it wouldnt do any good to try and hide things from Brett. We think shes gone after her mother."

DAMN IT! Brett roared, then groaned in pain as his yelling jarred his still very sore body. Kiara jumped at his outburst, but understood completely.

Brett, I know youre pissed right now, but you need to calm down. Hurting yourself more isnt going to help. She told him sternly. She heard him breathing heavily, partially from pain, partially from anger and frustration.

Is Kevin or Dale there with you? Brett asked a moment later when he got his breath back.

They both are. Kiara told him.

Let me talk to Kevin. Brett said, then added. I really am glad youre okay, and I cant wait to see you.

Kiara smiled sadly. Me too, and dont worry, well find her. Then she held the phone out to Kevin, who had already moved closer to her side.

Kiara watched as Kevin moved across the room and talked quietly to Brett. She knew without being told Brett was telling him to get all the information he could to find Sydney. She could only imagine what Brett was going through right now. Not only was he still in New York, but he was also stuck in the hospital for lord only knew how much longer.

She leaned against Dale with a sigh, resting her head on his shoulder, giving him a small smile when he put his arm around her, holding her close to his side.

Do you really think well find her? Kiara asked softly, her eyes begging Dale to tell her the truth. He kissed her forehead before looking down into her eyes.

I honestly dont know, honey, but I do know this. We are going to try like hell, and we arent going to give up. He promised.

Kiara nodded then put closed her eyes, willing the doctor to hurry the hell up. She was to be released as soon as the doctor came back, although she was under strict orders to take it easy for the next couple days, and she had no doubt that Dale would see that she did just that.

Chapter Ninety Six

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Fuck!" Brett swore viscously as he threw his cell phone across the room after having just finished talking to the detective that had been hired to help find Sydney.
Yet another lead gone cold.
It had been three months since Sydney had left and they were no closer to finding her than they had been the first day. There had been dozens of leads, but every time when it seemed like they were so close to finding her, they ran into a dead end. It was really beginning to wear on everyone's nerves and they all feeling angry, frustrated, hurt, and so much more.
"Everything all right?" Mrs. Scallions asked as she came into the room after hearing her son's angry voice.
Brett took a deep breath in an attempt to control his jumbled emotions before turning around to face his mother. He was visiting his parents for a few days before the tour was scheduled to resume that weekend. Still not knowing where Sydney was, he didn't want to go back on the road, but everyone had insisted that it was what was best for him. He knew that they were just looking out for him, but they didn't know what was best for him...they had no idea.
He wasn't sure if would be able to stay at his parents' for as long as he had planned. It was only a couple more days, but he wasn't sure how much more he could handle. Although they had never said outright that they were glad Sydney was gone, but he could tell...easily.
"No, mom, everything is not all right. If you'd open your damn eyes, you'd see that!" He nearly yelled, unable to understand how his own parents couldn't see how miserable he was when everyone else could see it plain as day.
"I'm sorry." Brett immediately apologized, feeling bad for the way he had just spoken to his mother. He was so angry and hurt by the way his parents had treated Sydney at the hospital, yet that didn't give him the right to disrespect them the way he just had with his mom. The fact that they had completely disrespected Sydney still pissed him off though.
Before his mom could reply, Brett's cell phone rang from where it was still lying on the floor across the room. He stalked over there and snatched it up, growling a 'hello' into it after bringing it up to his ear.
Mrs. Scallions watched her son for a moment, finally realizing that what he'd said was true. Everything was not all right with her son. As much as it saddened her to see him like that, it really was better for him this way. It was better for him not having Sydney in his life. And the longer that she stayed gone, the more he would realize that and the sooner he could move on with his life.
*****
Sydney sighed as she opened her eyes after waking from another very restless night. That was the normal anymore. She hadn't slept well in months and anyone who saw her, knew it. The stress was getting to be too much. She hadn't been eating well either. She looked like shit...Hell, she felt like shit.
She thought of Brett, Kiara, and everyone else all the time, but all of her energy was focused on her mom. She knew that if she talked to any of them even once, they could easily talk her into coming back home; she missed them so much that it hurt. But she'd come this far and she wasn't about to lose sight of her target.
Two weeks ago, she had found out where her mom was hiding out at. In that time, she had become her mom's 'friend'; telling her how right she had been about Brett, Kiara and everything else. That she was way above them and that she didn't want anything to do with them anymore. It literally sickened Sydney to be in her mom's presence and to speak those words, but she knew that in the end, it would be worth it. Her mom had betrayed her in the most awful way and what she was doing now was setting her mom up for the ultimate payback.
Chapter Ninety Seven
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kiara turned off the cell phone and tossed it next to her on the couch, holding her head in her hands as she went over her conversation she had just had with Brett. There was still no clue as to Sydneys whereabouts.

She sat back with a sigh, her eyes closed as she desperately wracked her brain as to any place Sydney might have mentioned in the past. But even doing so, she knew it was no use. It wasnt as if she hadnt already tried this very same thing nearly a million times in the past three months.

She looked up when her brother came in the room and sat down next to her, immediately putting a comforting arm around her. Since the incident with Mrs. Hudson, neither Kevin, Dale nor Michael wanted her out of their site.

Since the house was lonely and constantly reminded her of Sydney, she had rented it out, going back to the guest house at her brothers, although she spend most of her time either at DEI, Dales or the main house, not wanting to be alone.

No news. Kevin guessed, not really making it a question as he studied his sisters distressed expression.

She shook her head, confirming his suspicions. Nope. Its beginning to feel hopeless. She sighed, wiping at the tear that streaked down her face.

Hey, now that doesnt sound like you. Youve always been the one to never give up. So dont start now. Kevin told her sternly. Kiara just shook her head.

Kevin, its been three fucking months! she exclaimed, sitting up, her frustrations taking over. We havent even come close to finding her!

Just as suddenly as her anger flared, it faded leaving her feeling exhausted as she leaned her head on her brothers shoulder. Kevin rubbed her shoulder soothingly; wishing like hell there was something he could do.

Wheres Junior? he asked, knowing full well if there was anything that could cheer Kiara up, it was his best friend. He just thanked his lucky stars hed come to his senses and got over his problem with having Dale and Kiara together. He was finally able to see what everyone had been telling him before. They truly were the perfect couple. Even a blind person could see just how in love they were, and that they were indeed meant for each other.

Kiara lifted her head and smile softly. Hes on his way over now. She glanced down at her watch. In fact he should be here any she trailed off when the doorbell rang.

Kevin grinned. Second. He supplied as he got up off the couch and went over to the door, anxious to get Dale in there and hopefully Kiara away from the depression she was slowly allowing herself to sink into.

***

Its good to see you. Kiara said softly as she hugged Brett tightly. They were in Sonoma California for a race, and she and Dale had convinced Brett to fly out for the weekend.

You too. Ive missed you. Brett answered truthfully. Ever since Sydneys disappearance he and Kiara had forged a very strong bond and friendship. Both of their brushes with death and their love for Sydney connected them in a way like nothing else could.

How are you doing? Kiara asked pulling back and looking deep into his eyes, knowing she would find the answer she was looking for there. What she found she knew she saw every time she looked in the mirror. Desperation.

Imhanging in there as best I can. Brett sighed, sitting down on the couch in Juniors motor coach. They were waiting for Dale to return from practice.

I know what you mean. Kiara sat down across from him, pulling her legs up so she could rest her chin on her knees. Im guessing you havent heard anything new.

Brett gave her a sad smile. You know if I had I would have told you right away. Kiara nodded and looked away, biting her lip.

Have you talked to Mr. Hudson? she asked.

Every day.

Before Kiara could say anything the door to the coach opened. They both looked up when Dale and Kevin walked in.

Hey all. Congratulate me. I just kicked Juniors ass out there on the track. Kevin boasted, puffing his chest up. Dale crossed his arms over his chest and scowled at his best friend.

How do you figure you kicked my ass? Dale demanded the scowl fading and a smile forming when Kiara stepped up to him and gave him a quick kiss. He nodded to Brett who sat back, grinning as he watched Kevin and Dale. One thing he had to say about his two friends, when ever they got arguing they could brighten up just about anyones spirits.

Well, easy. My practice time was a hell of a lot better than yours. Kevin grinned, winking at his little sister, who was leaning back against Dale, shaking her head.

The only reason youre time was better than mine was because you only ran half the laps I did out there. Dale mumbled. Kevin waved off the excuse.

Yeah, yeah, well my car was hauling ass and I didnt want to over run it. Kevin grinned.

Kiara looked up at Dale with an eye brow raised, knowing full well there was more to the story. Dale grinned as he looked down at her. He blew his engine. Brett couldnt help it, he had to laugh. The expression on Kevins face was priceless.

Kiara moved forward and hugged her brother comfortingly. Its okay, Im sure the back up car will be just as quick. Kevin simply grunted and walked over to the fridge and grabbed a beer, needing one after the hellish practice it had turned out to be. Blowing an engine never made for a good weekend.

Dale moved over to Brett, who stood up. Glad you decided to come out. Dale told him, patting him on the shoulder after they both sat down.

Thank you girlfriend. I wasnt planning on coming, but for some damn reason, I just cant say no to her. Brett grinned at Kiara who wiggled her eyebrows at the two men before turning back to the conversation she was currently in with her brother.

Dale smirked as he got more comfortable on the couch, his eyes touching on Kiara. Believe me, I know.

They were interrupted by a cell phone ringing. Kiara jumped up from the table and grabbed her phone, everyone falling quiet.

Hello? Oh, hi. She said, looking perplexed and confused. Suddenly her eyes went wide and her whole body jerked as if she had been struck. All three men were by her side instantly.

T-thank you. She whispered before closing her phone. She took a couple deep breaths and turned to look at everyone, her eyes stopping on Brett.

That was Mr. Hudson. She said in a shaky voice. He her voice broke.

He knows where Sydney is.

Chapter Ninety Eight

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brett handed the pictures over to Kiara after having looked at them. Anger, frustration, and heartache swept through him as he thought about what he had seen. The detective had taken them and given to Mr. Hudson to confirm that the woman he'd found was indeed Sydney. It was her, no doubt about that, but they'd each had to look over the pictures a couple times to be sure; she'd changed that much since they'd last seen her.
"Man..." Kiara murmured as she finished looking at them and set them down on the table. Brett and Mr. Hudson nodded in agreement, knowing what Kiara was thinking before she could say it.
Sydney looked horrible. But it was more than just the obvious; the weight she'd lost, the way her shoulders slumped in defeat, the lifelessness of her once brilliant golden hair...it was something that only those who were closest to her could see. It was her eyes...there was no light in them. Her expression was void...dead.
'We'll fly out tomorrow morning in my personal jet." Mr. Hudson told Brett and Kiara, breaking the heavy silence that had fallen over them. They'd all met at the Hudson's home in Memphis because Sydney's father hadn't wanted to disclose Sydney's location over the phone. Mostly because he knew how Brett, and probably Kiara, would react once they knew where she was.
Kiara sat back in her chair with a sigh. She really wished that Dale were there with her right then. She needed his strength and assurance now more than anything. He had some previous commitments that he couldn't get out of and although he didn't approve of it, he agreed that Kiara would fly out to Memphis with Brett and he would join them late that night when he was able to get away.
"So where is she?" Brett asked Mr. Hudson as he picked up the photos and stared at Sydney's image once again. Looking over at Brett, Kiara felt her heart go out to him. His anguish was so painfully obvious that it made her heart ache for him.
"Florida." Mr. Hudson answered as he raked his fingers through his hair.
"But I thought she couldn't be found there?" Kiara questioned in confusion. The detective had told them that there had been no sign of Sydney or her mother there.
"Apparently Joan rented a place there under an assumed name so that it why she wasn't found during the initial search. We probably still wouldn't have found her if she hadn't slipped up." Sydney's father told Brett and Kiara.
Chapter Ninety Nine
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dale sighed with relief when the captain came over the speakers, announcing their decent. He wasnt sure how much longer Kiara or Bretts patience would hold out. From the moment they had boarded Mr. Hudsons private jet they had all been extremely antsy, not that he could blame them in the least.

Brett was currently fidgeting in his seat and kept glancing at his watch. Kiara was staring out the window, either chewing on her bottom lip or on her fingernails. Mr. Hudson sat down after pacing the length of the plane the entire time.

Although he didnt show it like the others, Dale was feeling pretty much the same thing as everyone else. He was anxious to see Sydney and make sure she was okay, because after the pictures hed seen, he wasnt so sure.

He understood why she felt she had to bring her mother down, but he didnt like the way she was also destroying herself. And without knowing it, she was taking Kiara and Brett down with her.

Turning his attention back to Kiara, he leaned closer to her, resting his hand on the back of her neck, gently massaging, easily feeling the tension that was there. She turned her head, her eyes meeting his, and gave him a small forced smile.

You okay, baby? he asked softly. Hed absolutely hated the fact that he couldnt be there for her earlier when she had gone to Tennessee with Brett. But hed had a race, although he couldnt even remember most of it, and didnt honestly know what place he finished. Hed climbed from his car, bypassed everyone, and hauled ass to the airport where he caught a flight to Tennessee and immediately boarded Mr. Hudsons jet.

Kiara sighed and didnt even attempt to lie about how she was feeling. No, she said honestly with a shaky smile. But I will be once Sydney is back where she belongs, and away from that psychotic bitch.

Suddenly she stiffened and sat forward looking at all three men. How exactly are we going to do this? she asked, getting questioning looks from the men.

Sydney is with her mother right now. Shes worked to get back into her mothers good gracesand although I dont agree with it, we cant just blow her cover. There is no telling what that woman will do if she finds out Sydney has been playing her this whole time! Kiara cried, suddenly extremely afraid for her best friend.

Brett eyes were filled with fire and determination. I dont care about that crazy fucking bitch! he spat. And she wont have a chance to do anything to Sydney, or anyone else for that matter.

Brett. Dale said, his voice filled with warning. He didnt blame Brett one bit, hell there was a very big part of him that wanted to get his own hands on the woman, but he knew it wasnt the answer.

Sydney is going to need to you. Your focus needs to be on her, not her mother. Dale told not only Brett, but Kiara and Mr. Hudson as well.

Mr. Hudson spoke up. My sources tell me that every day Sydney takes a walk on the beachalone. I thought he trailed off.

What? Brett demanded.

I think the best person to see Sydney first is Kiara. He said, smiling at the woman who over the past couple months had become like a second daughter to him. Both Brett and Dale looked ready to protest and he held up his hand, halting them.

Listen to me. Brett, youre emotional right now, overly so. I sympathize with that. Hell I am as well. Kiara has always been the one to be there for Sydney and vice versa. He paused and looked directly at Kiara. You two know each other inside out, maybe even better than that. You are the one who needs to first approach her. I can only imagine the bullshit her mother has filled her head with these past few monthsif anyone is going to get to Sydney right now, its you.

Kiara nodded. Ill do it.

Dale grabbed her hand. No! Kiaras head snapped around and she glared at him.

What?

You are not going alone, when that woman could be there. I almost lost you once, Ill be damned if Im going to lose you now!

Kiara was about to protest but stopped when she thought about it. She was quiet for a moment then spoke.

I hate to say this, but I think youre wrong, Mr. Hudson. I agree that I need to be there when first seeing Sydneybut Im not the only one. Yes, Sydney and I have a strong connection, but so do she and Brett. Brett lifted his head and looked gratefully at her.

He needs to be there just as much as I do. So, I propose this. We all go to this beach, and when we see Sydney, it will be Brett and I who first go up to her. She stated. Dale sat back, more relaxed. He was still apprehensive but he knew Brett would keep both women safe, and he would be damn close and ready to pull them all out of there if anything went down.

Thank you. Brett said softly and Kiara smiled at him.

Im sorry, I didnt mean Mr. Hudson started, feeling horrible for how his words must have sounded. Brett stopped his apology.

Its fine. I understand and agree with most of what you said. But I will be there. I wont stay backI cant. his voice broke with emotion. They all fell silent as the plane touched down, each lost in their own thoughts as to what was about to happen.

Chapter One Hundred

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sydney paused in her walk when she suddenly felt like she was being watched. She turned in a circle, then sighed softly and continued walking when she didn't see anyone. She knew though, that her mother often followed her and that this was probably another one of those occasions.
Reaching the dock where she usually turned around, Sydney sat down in the sand, not ready to go back yet. She knew that she couldn't go on like this much longer and that soon things would have to come to a head with her mother. She drew her knees up to her chest, putting her head down as she wrapped her arms around her legs. She shivered slightly, the heat of the day doing little to warm her.
Sydney lifted her head when she again had the sensation of being watched. Her eyes grew wide, her breath catching in her throat when she glanced over her shoulder and saw Brett and Kiara cautiously making their way toward her. She immediately felt her spirits soar at seeing two of the people that she cared most about.
Rising to her feet, Sydney turned fully around, a hint of a smile forming as she watched Brett and Kiara until they stepped up to her.
"Sydney." Kiara's voice choked as she came forward and threw her arms around her, hugging her friend tight. She pulled back after a few seconds and moved aside to give Brett room.
Stepping up to her, his eyes burned with unshed tears as he hesitantly lifted his hand to touch her cheek. "Baby, pleas-" He began but stopped when his voice broke. Unable to find his voice again, he drew her into his arms, holding her tight; never wanting to let go. He noticed that her body was rigid against his at first, but after a few moments he felt her relax, her body melting into his as she wrapped her arms around him.
Sydney sighed softly as she buried her face into Brett's chest. She clung to him as if her life depended on it and she realized almost immediately that while she knew that she had missed him in the time that they'd been apart, she never really knew how deeply until right then. The same with Kiara.
She moved to get closer to Brett, but stopped when panic suddenly seized her. What if he mother was around...seeing what was going on? As much as she wanted to be back with Brett and Kiara, she couldn't risk it. She couldn't risk them being hurt again and she couldn't risk losing the chance of getting her revenge. Not when she'd come this far and was so close to bringing her mother down.
Brett pulled back when he felt Sydney's body grow stiff against his. He moved back at the same time as she did and was surprised when she pushed him away. He glanced over at Kiara and saw the same shock in her eyes.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Sydney nearly shrieked, allowing the anger that she felt toward her mom to take over the anguish that was flowing through her at the decision that she had to make. And that anger she turned on to Brett and Kiara.
"You both need to leave...NOW!" Sydney demanded, her eyes shooting sparks of fury at them.
Brett's shoulders slumped as he backed away a few steps. He looked over at Kiara feeling helpless and not knowing what to say or do.
Kiara stepped forward and looked Sydney in the eye. "We know what you're doing, Syd." She spoke softly, watching closely for Sydney's reaction. She felt a little disheartened, but wasn't about to give up when Sydney didn't even flinch at her words.
"You can't keep doing this to yourself. It is slowly killing you. I can see it...Brett can see it. Give it up, Syd. Let the police handle things with your mother." Kiara pleaded with her friend.
Sydney looked at Brett and Kiara, the worry and love in their eyes nearly doing her in. But her need to bring her mom down was too strong. She hardened herself, pushing aside all of her emotions except the anger that was roiling around inside of her. She only hoped that when this was all over, Brett and Kiara could find it in their hearts to forgive her.
"Now that's where you're wrong. This isn't killing me. The fact is that I've never felt more alive." She told them.
Brett and Kiara stared at her in disbelief. "If you feel so alive, then why do you look like you've been dead the past three months that we haven't seen you?" Brett questioned, hoping to her realize that she couldn't keep up with this game.
Sydney was momentarily taken aback by his question and the emotion in his eyes, but she quickly got herself back together. "Because it's taken me that long to realize how naive I've been. Now that I realize that my mother has been right all along about you two, I've never been happier."
"Bullshit!" Kiara yelled, unable to believe what Sydney was saying to them. "You don't mean that at all. She has brainwashed you into believing that."
"Please come home with us, Syd." Brett begged, both he and Kiara holding their breath as they waited for Sydney's response.
Chapter One Hundred One
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sydney was on the verge of giving in and giving up her quest. All she wanted was to go back with Brett and Kiara and be happy. But deep down she knew that would never be possible when her mother was still out there on the loose. And shed come this far, could she really just walk away now?

She caught movement off to her right, her breath catching when she saw Dale and her father standing there. Her composure slipped a little farther, and she opened her mouth to tell them all she would go back with them when she saw something that made the words in her throat freeze.

Her mother.

Sydney immediately made up her mind, knowing that she was about to not only break Brett, Kiara, Dale and her fathers hearts, but her own as w ell. She just hoped she had the strength to survive this.

Her eyes went cold and her whole posture changed as she glared at Brett. If I wanted to come home, I would have been there. She snapped, then turned her glare to Kiara. I dont want you here, either of you!

The look on Kiaras face was almost her undoing, but she glanced again at her mother, who was standing back, taking in every word and continued. She was ready to give up everything to keep the ones she loved safe.

Get the hell away from me. Go back to your perfect little lives and leave me the hell alone! she snarled, thinking briefly that she really deserved an academy award for her acting.

But she knew so far it wasnt enough to get Brett or Kiara to give up, so she was going to have to hit below the belt. She inwardly composed herself, preparing for her next words.

Youre helping me to realize that my mother really was right all along. You all are beneath me. Youll never be good enough for me, Ive just been too blind to se it. But no more. I never want to see any of you again!

With that she spun around and all but ran down the beach, half hoping Brett or Kiara would stop her, yet also relieved when they didnt. She knew she would never have the strength to lie to their faces. She had to get away, she hadnt taken the time to see the affect her words had on them, and she hadnt wanted to. It was already tearing her apart inside, so if she had seen the looks in their eyes it would haunt her until her dying day.

She noticed her mother wasnt around anymore and felt her rage growing towards the woman who had given birth to her. Her mother had officially ruined her life. Oh yes, she was going to bring her downand bring her down hard.

Chapter One Hundred Two

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brett and Kiara stood stunned as they watched Sydney retreat. After a few moments, they both turned and began walking away in the opposite direction.
Dale immediately went after Kiara, wanting to give her the strength and support that he knew she needed very badly at that moment.
Mr. Hudson watched as Brett stopped after going a few feet and looked down at the ground while he ran a shaky hand through his hair, his shoulders dropping in defeat. His heart going out to the young man, Mr. Hudson walked over to where Brett stood.
Brett jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He took in a deep breath and slowly let it out before he turned his anguish filled blue eyes to Sydney's father. "I think that deep down..." He trailed off when his voice broke. After taking a moment to collect himself, he tried again.
"Deep down we all knew that something like this might happen. But I never imagined that it would...I was in denial or something. The way I envisioned it, it would be a beautiful reunion and Sydney would immediately agree to come home with us. Her mother would be in jail. Our lives would instantly return back to normal. Hell, I don't think any of us even knows what 'normal' is anymore." Brett sighed heavily, but it did nothing to relieve the tension in his body.
"I just never imagined that it would turn out like this." Brett stated once more.
"We all know that Sydney is a very strong willed woman...she does what she wants to do. She always has. It drove her mother insane...it still does. No matter how wrong we know what she's doing is, to her it is something that she feels that she must do. But even after what just happened, we can't give up on what we came her to do." Mr. Hudson paused as he looked into Brett's eyes, easily seeing the pain and skepticism there.
"You do know that Sydney didn't mean the things that she said to you and Kiara, don't you?" He asked after a moment.
"I'm trying to convince myself of that, but I can't. I keep seeing the anger...the loathing in her eyes as she told us she has finally realized that her mother was right all along. She now believes that we are below her and that she never..." Brett trailed off, unable to go any further.
"It's all a cover up." Mr. Hudson told Brett. "I can guarantee you that it ripped Sydney apart inside to say those words to you and Kiara. She didn't mean a single word of it. Not at all."
"How can you be sure?" Brett questioned still feeling very uncertain, unable to forget the hatred that he'd seen in Sydney's eyes.
"Think about how she was when she first saw you and Kiara. I know my daughter and I know that she was genuinely happy to see you and Kiara." Mr. Hudson paused for a moment to allow Brett some time to remember before continuing.
"When her attitude changed, it was for a very good reason...well, a good reason for Sydney anyway. With your back turned, you didn't see her, but Sydney's mother was lurking around. I am certain that if she wouldn't have been here, Sydney would be at the airport with us right now on our way home." Mr. Hudson again paused, looking Brett in the eye, his expression gravely serious. "We can not back down on this. If her mother finds out what she is thinking, us being here could be a matter of life or death for Sydney."
Chapter One Hundred Three
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, anybody have a suggestion about what the fuck were gonna do? Brett finally exploded once they had all gotten back to the hotel and sat down, everyone eerily quiet.

Bretts patience were wearing thin. Once he took the time to really think about what Sydneys father had said, he knew the older man was right. But now, knowing that the hatred hed seen in her eyes was fake, he was even more impatient to get her the hell away from her mother and back in his arms where she belonged. More than anything, he wanted to keep her safe. And right now she was anything but.

Dale and Mr. Hudson both shook their heads and all eyes turned to Kiara, who was sitting silently staring out the window. In fact, she hadnt said a word to anyone since leaving the beach. Feeling everyones eyes on her, she turned and looked at the three men.

Excuse me. She mumbled as she got up and walked to the bathroom, shutting the door behind her, needing to be alone for a few minutes. Her emotions were completely scattered and she didnt feel like being around anyone at the moment.

She sat down on the cold tile floor, her back against the wall as she drew her knees up and rested her head against them. She had heard what Mr. Hudson said to Brett, and although she knew he was most likely correct, she couldnt get the look in Sydneys eyes and the pure hatred in her voice out of her mind.

Then of course there was the fact that if it had all indeed been an act, then Sydney was now in even more danger. She closed her eyes and sighed, wishing there was some way to make all this right without anyone else getting hurt.

She didnt even bother looking up when there was a knock on the door, knowing full well who was on the other side. Its open. She called out wearily, suddenly feeling more tired than she ever had in her life.

Baby? Dale asked softly as he knelt next to her and gently rubbed her back, the concern written clearly on his face and heard in his voice.

Kiara sighed and lifted her head, giving him a small smile. Im fine. She said before he could even ask. Really, I just needed a few minutes alone.

Everything is going to be okay. He promised, although he wasnt sure how at the moment. She didnt even try to argue with him.

I know, its just getting to that point is so damn hard. She sighed as he put his arm around her, pulling her against him, where she gladly accepted the comfort he was offering. What do we do now? she asked quietly.

Dale pulled back and looked down at her. Thats what were trying to figure out. But one thing is damn certain. Were not leaving here until we have Sydney safe and sound, and her mother in custody.

***

How was your walk, dear? Mrs. Hudson asked Sydney later that night, having not mentioned anything sooner. Sydney glanced at her mother warily, wondering what game she was playing now. Maybe she honestly didnt know that she had been seen.

Not very good. Sydney replied, allowing her anger to take over, but playing it off as if it were anger towards Brett and Kiara. I had some visitors.

Sydneys mother raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow. She hadnt expected Sydney to admit this, but in doing so, she gained more and more of her mothers trust.

Brett and Kiara were there. Sydney said, her voice flat, but her eyes blazing.

What did they say?

They wanted me to come back with them. She answered, not looking at her mother as she set the table for dinner. She had to watch how she was holding the glass, because she was clenching her fist so hard she was afraid it might break in her hand.

I take it youre not going. Mrs. Hudson said, leaning against the counter, studying her daughter and her reaction closely. Sydney spun around.

Of course not! Like I told them, I want absolutely nothing to do with any of them anymore. They are nothing to me anymore. Im much better off without them, youve shown me that. I was just too young and naive to believe it before. Sydney snapped. Her mother smiled lovingly at her, about making her sick, but she held it inside.

Mrs. Hudson stepped forward and gathered her daughter in her arms, holding her tight. Thats my girl. She whispered softly as she stroked her hair, as if she were a child.

Sydney squeezed her eyes tightly together, inwardly calming herself down telling herself to breathe normally. With just a brief moments hesitation, her own arms came around her mother returning the hug.

Soon. She thought to herself as she forced herself to stay still and not strangle the woman holding her. Soon this will all be over and Ill be back where I belong. And Mommy dearest will be burning in hell.

Chapter One Hundred Four

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mrs. Hudson paused outside of Sydney's room and put her ear to the door, listening closely. It had been a week since the confrontation with Brett and Kiara, whom both Sydney and herself knew were still lurking around along with Sydney's father. Things had been going good up until the last day or two. Sydney had suddenly become very withdrawn and quiet. She was very distracted and jumpy and she was more than a little suspicious of her daughter.
Hearing Sydney's voice coming from within, Mrs. Hudson very carefully opened the door just a crack. When she saw that Sydney was facing the window, her back to her, she opened the door a little bit further to better hear what Sydney was saying to whomever was on the other end of the phone line.
Her eyes narrowed in fury when she heard what Sydney was saying and realized that she was talking to the police. Her daughter had most likely been playing her all along.
Mrs. Hudson closed the door, again being very careful to do it quietly so that Sydney would not hear her. She turned and walked down the hallway to the kitchen, grabbing the largest knife off of the butcher block. She tucked it into the back of her slacks and after making sure that it was hidden, she went back to Sydney's room, throwing the door open just as Sydney was finishing her phone call. Sydney spun around, her eyes wide with shock, anger, and a little bit of fear when her eyes touched on her mother and knew that she knew what was going on.
"You have made a lot of mistakes in your life, but you just made your worst and last." Mrs. Hudson said softly, but the look in her eyes completely belied the hushed tone of her voice.
Sydney glared at her mother, her eyes cold and unforgiving. "did you really think that you were getting away with this?" She demanded, her hands clenched into tights fists at her sides as she fought the urge to wrap them around her mother's throat and squeeze the life from her. No, her mother wasn't going to get the easy way out. She was going to make sure her mother spent the rest of her miserable life rotting in a jail cell. She was thankful that she could hear the sirens approaching from the distance because she wasn't sure how long she could resist the urge.
Mrs. Hudson smiled sweetly as she took a couple of steps forward, nearly closing the distance between Sydney and herself. "I do admit, you had me going there. What you've done only proves that you are a lot more like me than you think you are."
"I will never be like you!" Sydney spat, her entire being trembling as the emotions that she'd held in for so long began to surface.
"That, my dear, is where you're wrong. You are more like me than you'll ever know. You know, you might as well stick with me because after the things you said to Brett and Kiara, they'll want nothing more to do with you."
Sydney stepped forward until she was nose to nose with her mother. "I'd rather burn in hell than spend another second in your presence."
Mrs. Hudson's smile turned malicious as she took in her daughter's words. "Oh, I think that that can be arranged." She stated as she reached behind her, grabbing the knife and driving it into Sydney's abdomen before she could even realize what was happening.
Sydney gasped, her eyes wide as the pain and shock shot through her. She cried out as her mother shoved the knife deeper, twisting it before pulling it out of her. Sydney looked down where the knife had gone in and staggered drunkenly backwards when she saw the blood soaking her shirt. She tried desperately to maintain her balance, but with the excruciating pain and the amount of blood that she already lost, she couldn't. She fell backwards to the floor and struggled to get up, but her mother jumped atop her, easily holding her down.
"I didn't want this to be the way things ended, but this is all your own doing, Sydney. Everything I ever did...it was all for you. I knew what was best for you. And you never once appreciated my efforts, you ungrateful little bitch!" Sydney's mother screamed the last few words as she plunged the knife into her daughter's body repeatedly until she began to realize that Sydney was no longer struggling. Mrs. Hudson's eyes were glazed as she got up and left the room, not once looking back. She knew that Sydney would soon be dead, if she wasn't already.
Sydney lay there struggling to breathe as her punctured lungs filled with blood. She tried calling for help, but the only sound that came from her was a gurgle as she choked on the blood that filled her throat and mouth from her numerous internal injuries.
At the same time that Mrs. Hudson was making her way to the front door, Brett, Kiara, and Sydney's father were rushing up the sidewalk that led to the house where Sydney and her mother were staying. They'd been at the hotel, trying to figure out what to do next, when all three of them at the same time were overcome with the feeling that something was terribly wrong.
They froze in their tracks when the door suddenly opened and Mrs. Hudson appeared; herself and the knife that she still gripped in her hand covered in blood. The stood there for several moments, all of them too stunned to move or to do anything at all. Brett broke out of his daze first and he rushed forward, knocking Mrs. Hudson out of the way. From the wild look in her eyes, he wasn't sure that she was even aware of his presence or that of Kiara and Sydney's father.
Brett ran through the house, searching frantically for Sydney. When he found her, he was again stopped in his tracks, all of the air leaving his lungs in a sharp rush that left him feeling lightheaded. Although it seemed an eternity, only a few seconds passed before he came back to his senses and rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside her.
Brett looked down at Sydney, a low, anguish filled moan escaping him when all he saw was her lifeless eyes staring back at him.
