Laney High defeated tough competition in the Eastern 4A Conference today at Wilmington Hoggard. This was the second time this year that all 7 teams of the conference (Laney, Hoggard, White Oak, New Hanover, Ashley, Jacksonville, West Brunswick) met at Hugh Macrae Park for the race. Last time Laney men finished 2nd to White Oak by 2 points. The Bucs were not defeated this time however, winning with a score of 49-53 over White Oak. Leading runners for Laney included Kyle Costello, Brandon Lehman, Mac McDonnough, Billy Kish, and Brian Barkman. Two of Laney's top runners, Justin Fischetti and Clay Myers, were unable to run due to injury.
Earlier this week, Laney also defeated Hoggard and West Brunswick in a home meet that was postponed due to Hurricane Isabel.
*NOTE: The match on September 25th was originally scheduled to be Laney, Hoggard, and West Brunswick.*

Soutwestern Randolph High School is hosting their first, and Randolph County's first, Cougar Invitational Cross Country Meet on Saturday morning at 10:00 am, beginning with the boys' race and commencing with the girls' race at 10:30 am. The meet will feature currently registered 223 high school runners. Visiting teams include North Moore High School from Robbins, Green Hope High School from Morrisville (80 runners), and Terry Sanford High School from Fayetteville (80 runners). Concessions and special commemorative meet t-shirts will be sold, and admission will be $5. Sponsors include Central Carolina Bank, (David Cross) trophies; Chick-Fil-A, (Sam Ramsey) coaches' and managers' meals; Top Dog Embroidery, (Ron Bennett) meet shirts; Sagesports, (Manager Alfredo) door prizes and race bags; and Coca-Cola, PowerAde drinks. The Cougars' course will be specially altered for this large meet to feature a field start and track finish in the stadium to accomodate spectator viewing and seating.
**Update**: The Southwestern Randolph High School Cougar Cross Country Invitational in Asheboro will run on Saturday morning at 10:00 am as planned. If the school's regular trail course does not dry out enough on Friday, Coach Bernie Hall has already mapped out an alternate course, using the high school and middle school roads, dirt roads, and bus road, in a flat, fast, easy to navigate, and spectator-friendly format. Current teams entered include Green Hope, Terry Sanford, North Moore, and Southwestern Randolph.
Any school teams unable to attend other meets on Saturday are welcome to enter the Cougar Invitational. Simply show up on Saturday morning by 9:00 am for the coursewalk, and bring a set of name and school labels for your finish cards; that will help speed up the results. The entry fee is $35 per team for your top 7 runners, and $50 maximum per school. Contact bhall@asheboro.com Contributed by Bernie Hall, Charlie Hayes
