Generation No. 1

1. ANTHONY1 RAWLINGS was born Abt. 1735, and died 1774 in Bedford Co., VA1. He married MARY ANN Abt. 1754 in Bedford Co, VA.

Notes for ANTHONY RAWLINGS:

See RFHA June 1994 p.20.

Interested in ancestors of Anthony Rollin(g)s of Bedford Co., VA. He was married to a Mary ___. Children were Benjamin b. c1755; Mary b. c1760 md Oct 23, 1780, Bedford Co., to Wm Ely; Elizabeth b. c1763, md Oct 2, 1786, Montgomery Co, VA, to Joseph Benjey, d. post April 24 and May of 1838. I have further info on the Ely, Benjey and Hall families. Elke A. Hall, 500 Tabb Lakes Drive, Yorktown, VA 23693-4127

Note there is another listing of this Anthony, but one md to Ann ___. That listing has only two children, Joseph and Elizabeth. Both of these Elizabeths are listed as md to Joseph Benjey. Perhaps Anthoney had two wifes. The other listing has Anthony b 1735 and died 1774. The listing here is also from RFHA before June 1994, but I didn't record it darn it.

RFHA Jun 1988, p.5. Need info on the parents and family of Anthony Rollins (or Rawlins) , married Ann ___, died in 1774 in Bedford Co., VA. Known children were Mary (md Wm Ely, Sr. 23 Oct. 1780); Elizabeth (md Joseph Benjey 2 Oct. 1786) and Benjamin. William Benjey, 1829 Parkside Dr., Anchorage, AK 99501.

Also RFHA Sep 1998, p.38 says the children were Mary, Elizabeth, and Benjamin who died unmarried.See RFHA June 1994 p.20.

It seems very likely to me that this Anthony is a son of Samuel Rawlings b 1700-1735 in Westmoreland Co and son of Samuel who was son of Anthony b. bef 1683.

Wife is listed as Mary and as Ann. Either there were two wifes or she is Mary Ann. Use later until know more.

Notice this Bedford Co VA Will of Benjamin Rawlings. Witness Archibald Campbell.

RFHA June 1996 p.16. From Beverly Allan 1162 West Monterey, Stockton, CA 95204. Bedford Co, VA Will BK 1, p.256.

"In the name of God, Amen, this 20th day of Dec 1776, I Benjamin Rawlings of Bedford Co,...I leave to my Mother, Ann Rawlings, during her natural life the land and plantation whereon she now lives, and after her decease I give the said land and plantation to my brother, John Rawlings, to him and his heirs forever. Likewise al the wages that is due to me for being a soldier, and my rifle gun which I desire may be sold, and other debts that is or may be due to me, to be raised and payment to be made to discharge a Bond which may be due to Capt. George Caldwell. And what remains, I give to my mother to make use of during her life. And after her decease to my sister Ann Rawlings: likewise my cattle I leave to my Mother to have the sole use of until my said sister Ann comes to lawful age or marries. If Ann should die before she comes to lawful age or marries, then the said estate I give my mother Ann Rawlings and her heirs forever. Moreover I appoint and constitute my friend Mr. Vincent Glass, Executor... Signed Benjamin Rawlings in the presence of: Archibald Campbell, Jacob Marr, Nathaniel Tanner. Proved May 25, 1777.

Recall that Ann Rawlings, sister of Rebecca d. 1754, was under guardianship of Rebecca's husband Archibald Campbell. It would seem from above that Archibald moved to Bedford Co. Perhaps Ann did too. Archibald witness will of Benjamin Rawlings in Bedford, son of Anthony b. 1735. Perhaps Anthony was a brother of Rebecca and Ann or if not, perhaps a cousin. They were all born about the same time. Perhaps Anthony and Archibald moved to Bedford Co together. Recall that the grandfather of Jonathan was Anthony. It would make sense that one of his sons or their sons would name a child Anthony.

Children of ANTHONY RAWLINGS and MARY ANN are:

i. BENJAMIN2 RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1755 - 1763; d. 1777, Bedford Co., VA.

Notes for BENJAMIN RAWLINGS:

One RFHA source said he died 1755. The other RFHA Dec 1994, p. 45 says his "will is recorded in Bedford Co Dec 20, 1776 and proved May 26, 1777. He named his mother Ann (could her name have been Mary Ann?), his sister Ann and his brother John." This sounds like it is not the right Benjamin.

Note the witness Archibald Campbell is the widower of Rebecca Rawlings daughter of Jonathan (d. 1739) and Mary Rawlings of Westmoreland Co., VA. What could be the connection here?
