Descendants of John Rawlings

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 RAWLINGS was born Bef. 1720, and died Abt. 1754 in Lunenburg Co, Va.

Notes for JOHN RAWLINGS:

Surry Co John - doubt if this is him

1706: Witnessed a Deed 7 May, 1706 in Surry Co. D&W #5, 1694-1709, pg. 351

Robert Clark to Robert Carlisle and my daughter Elizabeth his wife - convey an 100 acre tract for and during their natural lives and after their decease to my grandson, Richard Carlisle. Witns: John Rawlings and Rich'd Norwood. Proved 7 May, 1706.

1745: Patent Book 22. JOHN RAWLINGS, 170 acs Surry and Is. of Wight Counties on the N side of the three Creeks, on the S side of the Great SW., adj Michael Upchurch, Christopher Golikeley & John Golikeley; 10 Jul 1745, p 312. 1 pound. . (I'm not sure which John this is.)

1748: Surry Co Deeds 1734-55: 31 Aug 1748... Peter Martin of Surry County to Thomas Eldridge of Prince George county for 35 pounds current money.. 300 acres (being part in Surry County and part in Isle of Wight County) on which he now lives. Wit: Wm Clack, Thomas Pate, Wm Morgan and John Rawlings. 20 Sep 1748.

Charles Sledge married another daughter or Robert Clark (Mary Clark). They had one son John Sledge and he had sons Charles, Daniel, Amos, and John as shown in his will of 27 Dec 1749 (Surry Co) witnessed by Hugh Ivey and Thomas Ivey.

Also Samuel Clark (son of Robert Clark) sold to John Peebles 200a between Robert Clark, Charles Sledge, Henry Wyche and Col. Wm Randolf. Witns: John Mason, Thomas Edmunds and Robert Carlilie (Jr).

This seems to say that there was a connection between Rawlings, Ivey, Mason that needs to be understood in terms of the 1763 death in Surry or Sussex of a John Rawlings that lists Ivey and Mason.

Witnessed will of Robert Nicholson dated 29 Sept 1716 proved 17 Feb 1719. Names gr. dau. Hannah; son Joshua, to have land purchased of Francis Osten - 180 acres; son John, all my lands on the creek that I purchased of Mr. George Lee, also tract purchased of my brother, George, 235 acres. Son Robert, land purchased of Robt. Reaves 200 acres; dau Joyce, slaves; dau Ann, slaves; dau. Elizabeth; Wife Joannah Joyce. Mr. Nicholas Cocke and Sampson Lanier, Overseers. Wits: Geo. Rawlings, JOHN RAWLINS, Mary Rawlings.

Just an interesting note: Halifax Co., VA Marriages:

24 Sep 1791 John Palmer (or John Thomas Palmer) - Mary Jones. Married 29 Sep 1791 by Rev. Thomas Dobson.

Perhaps the last time John is found alive (if this is him): Lunenburg Co VA Order Book 3, 2 July 1754. #114 last item. "William Anderson on petition against John Rolin deffendant; petitioner to recover debt/costs."

Then 3 Sep 1754. #189 first item. "Henry May appointed guardian for William Rawlings, orphan of John Rawlings, deceased: Thomas Jones security. (This is the right John Rawlings for sure).

I think John Rawlings must have died somewhere besides Lunenburg Co., (or before 1746) since there is no will or accounting. Then son William may have gone with his mother to Lunenburg and perhaps it is she that died in 1754. The John Rolin in the Order Book 3 could have been Wm's older brother John at age ~18 or not a Rawlings (Rollins) at all.

In fact note this:

LOB 2 1/2 B Nov Court 1753 item 512

[This John Roling is probably the John Rolin mentioned above in the July 1754 Court and probably is not a Rawlings - check].

Children of JOHN RAWLINGS are:

2. i. JOHN2 RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1736, VA; d. Abt. 1802, Charlotte Co, VA.

3. ii. WILLIAM RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1742; d. Bet. June 17 - September 02, 1793, Charlotte Co, VA.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 RAWLINGS (JOHN1) was born Abt. 1736 in VA, and died Abt. 1802 in Charlotte Co, VA. He married (1) SALLY Abt. 1769. She died Abt. 1780. He married (2) NEFF TERRILL June 19, 1781 in Charlotte Co, VA1, daughter of JAMES TERRILL and MARGARET WATKINS. She was born Bet. 1741 - 1751 in of Caroline Co., VA, and died Aft. February 1815.

Notes for JOHN RAWLINGS:

1771: Charlotte Co Deed Book 2 # 477 p 480. 13 Jan 1771. Jonathan Abbott of Pittsylvania Co to Bartholomew Baker of C for 10 pounds, 100 acres on Sandy Creek. Being part of a larger tract granted to said Jonathan by one Jonathan Ashworth. Beginning on the middle fork of said Creek and bounded by the lines of John Ashworth, JNO RAWLINS, WILLIAM RAWLINS, Wm. fulcher, and Wells. Wit: Samuel Ashworth, Susannah Ashworth, Anne Ashworth, Elizabeth Ashworth. Rc: 5 Aug 1771.

1771: Charlotte Co Deed Book 2 pg 489. 2 Sep 1771. John ASHWORTH of Pitsalvania Co. to Samuel ASHWORTH of C., for 5 pounds, 150 acres in C along Sandy Creek. Beginning on Samuel Ashworth's line and along the lines of William Bumpass, John Rolins, and Isaac Ashworth.

John's land in Charlotte is usually referred to as on both sides of Reynolds Creek which is a branch off Horsepen Creek. However, it is also near or on Sandy Creek as shown in Charlotte Co DB 3 pg 354 - Deed sep 6, 1773 from Bartholomew Baker of C to Richard Lampkin of C for 100 pounds, 100 acres in C on Sandy Cr, and bounded by Asher, John Rollins, William Rollins, Fulcher, Wels.

1716 HIS FATHER (JOHN III) AND "MARY" WITNESS WILL IN SURRY CO (is Mary a wife or his mother who I have died in 1710?)

Surry Co WB p244. Will of Robert Nicholson dated 29 Sept 1716 - proved 17 Feb. 1719 names gr. Dau. Hannah; son Joshua; son John; son Robert; dau. Joyce; dau. Ann; dau. Elizabeth; Wife Joannah Joyce. Overseers: Mr. Nicholas Cocke and Sampson Lanier. Wits: Geo. Rawlings, JOHN RAWLINS, MARY RAWLINGS. (Note both Robert Nicholson and Sampson Lanier were witnesses to JOHN RAWLINGS II'2 will in 1702.)

1727 CHARLES PARTIN SELLS THAT LAND WHICH HE DESCRIBES AS "LATE IN THE TENURE OF JOHN RAWLINGS". THIS IS THE LAST VERIFIED SOURCE MENTIONING HIS FATHER JOHN III (HE REPORTEDLY MARRIES MARY JONES IN THE 1730'S AND HAS JOHN IV, WILLIAM, AND GREGORY.)

Perhaps John III had been overseeing the land for Charles Partin from 1706-1727 and then decided to leave Surry Co.

1739 PERHAPS AN INDICATION HE IS STILL IN SURRY CO

Surry Co Deeds, Wills, Etc. #9 1738-1754 pg 119. 17 Mar 1739. Edward Ellis of southwarke Parish to Marmaduke Chatham of same. 170 acres (being a patent granted to John Rawlings on 20 Oct 1689) bounded by the said Chatham, Thomas Allstin's late Joshua Nicolson and the said JOHN RAWLINGS). Signed Edward Ellis and Jaen (X) Ellis. Wit: Joshua Nicolson and Charles Lucas. Rec: 19 Mar 1739.

(This could be (1) a boundry ref only to John III or (2) saying John IV now ownes this land or (3) John b c1719, the son of Gregory and Hannah, now owns the land.)

1745 PERHAPS LAND PATENTS TO JOHN IV OR TO JOHN SON OF GREGORY

Peter Martin of Surry Co to Thomas Eldridge of Prince George County for 35 pounds current money . 300 acres (being part in Surry County and part in Isle of Wight county) on which he now lives. Signed Peter (X) Martin. Wit William Clack, Thomas Pate, William (X) Morgan and JOHN RAWLINGS. Rec: 18 Oct 1748. (I suspect this John is Gregory's son John now about 29. He is tight with a John Morgan in the 1760's)

1764-1771 FIRST MARRIAGE OF JOHN IV

Married to Sally ? probably about 1767-70. Had children Sally (md. Bartlett James) and Letty (md. Archibald Fulks). It is possible that the next two children were also from Sally, i.e. Margaret (Peggy) and Mary (Polly)

~1771 FIRST MARRIAGE CHILDREN

The m.b. of Bartlett James to Sally Rolings, d/o John and Sally Rolings who consent, 6 March 1791, is recorded in Halifax Co., Va., shows Bartlett son of "Huke Thomas James" (Mar. Bonds...Halifax Co., VA 1753-1800,p. p.51, Knorr). Note - how can Sally consent since John has been re-married for 10 years - surely Sally died. This is my John's dau Sally because she is mentioned in his will as Sally James and see next.

Emigration to Other States From Southside VA, v1, Elliott, page 43, shows in a P/A - Bartlett James of Montgomery Co., NC identifies himself as a legatee of the estate of John Rawlins, Senr., Charlotte Co.,

VA.(Char.Co.DB 13:109)

IGI shows: Sally Rawlings b c1770 in Halifax as a dau of William Rawlings and Mary Magdaline Roberts (Source Batch Number F877351 5) and Mary Magdelene Rawlings b c1773 in Charlotte Co.(Film 2034704 no parents listed). I don't put too much stock in the accuracy of this IGI info, but they could both be daus of Wm and Mary Magdalene but much more likely they are my John's children since he did have a Sally md 1791 and a Mary (Polly) md 1805.

John Fults has told me that he also believes from his Fulks research that Letty Rawlings was a child of John's first marriage.

1794-1798 SURVEYOR OF THE ROAD

From Tom McCargo's biography of John McCargo (see Charlotte Co Web site): One important duty imposed on all free holders in early part of the 19th century Virginia was the office of "surveyor of the road". The duties included opening and keeping clear, a thirty foot wide road way and posting signs at each intersection. Surveyors were generally appointed during the winter court sessions and served three or four year terms. The post appears to have been rotated among the freeholders lying on the road and all were required to furnish "hands" to assist the surveyor. Surveyors of the road described as leading from Wyllie's tavern to Robert's at Almonds were WILLIAM RAWLINS 1787 -1790, Lloyd Portwood 1790 - 1794, JOHN RAWLINS 1794 - 1798, John McCargo 1798 - 1801, Thomas Portwood 1801- 1804.

by Linda Sparks Starr

JAN 1997

[I want to thank Susan Stewart, Kay Baganoff and especially Patricia Stanley for making this report possible. Most were com menting on my JULY96.asc file in which I mused about a possible earlier TERRELL connection to the CLARKs or JOHNSONs. I base my hypothesis on common given names for TERRELL children in VA -- Micajah, Penelope, Jonathan and Rachel. Going further, I pointed to a Richmond Terrell who signed the 1677 grievances list at Blis- land Parish with Thomas MOORMAN, Edward JOHNSON, Henry SNEAD and Thomas MIMS. According to a New Kent Co. history, the TERRELL Quakers of Hanover and Louisa County descended from the same line as this Richmond Terrell.

To prevent confusion, be aware I cite two different TERRELL "booklets" plus two TERRELL genealogies. I'm also experimenting with footnotes; let me know if this is better for you than cita tions within text. LSS]

Susan sent a two-page article [1] which provides the link for RICHMOND Terrell of New Kent Co. to his ancestral English home. The author (Coldham) writes: "The relationship of the New Kent Tyrrells was established beyond reasonable doubt by the loca- tion of the will of ROBERT Terrell of Reading, Berkshire, clothier, dated 1643." Robert names the following children in his will -- Robert, RICHMOND, William, Timothy, Maria, Margaret, John. He mentions unnamed children deceased; his wife Jane, (eldest) son John and brother-in-law Richard Hunt were appointed executors. The will of son JOHN Terrell of Reading, clothier, dated 3 MAR 1661/2 names brothers Robert, RICHMOND and William plus his uncles ___ Baldwin deceased and Richard Hunt.

Patricia Stanley located another source [2] which highlights the family of this Robert Terrell. This contributor apparently researched parish records in England for she provides baptism and some death dates. I'm quoting from Patricia's notes on the ar ticle: "Robert TERRELL, Councellor of Reading, was married to Jane BALDWIN, daughter of Robert Baldwin and his wife Joane Pegion ... in St. Giles Parish, Reading, 29 JUN 1617 and had

issue:

1. John of Reading, bapt 25 JUN 1618 d. 13 MAR 1661

2. Robert of London, b. 14 NOV 1619 d. 1677

3. Marie (or Mary) bapt. 1621

4. Margaret bapt 7 AUG 1623

5. Richmond (immigrated to VA 1656)

6. John bapt 5 APR 1626 d. 15 APR 1626

7. Charles bapt 9 NOV 1627 d. 28 SEP 1629

8. William bapt 22 JUN 1629

9. Timothy bapt 22 JUN 1631"

Patricia adds the following information: "Robert Terrell, brother of Richmond and William Terrell, became a member of the Fishmongers Company, merchants of London. He carried on con siderable trade with the colonists of VA and made regular voyages to this country where he personally transacted business. There are several items in the York County, VA records in which he was a witness to deeds and other transactions, the earliest we have seen being dated 18 FEB 1646/7. There were others dated in 1647, 1650 and 1662."

Roy Terrell [3] descends from the son Timothy "of Allhal lows, Broad Street, London", whose orphan of the same name, followed his "near relatives" to VA. Timothy, son of Robert and Jane (Baldwin) married Dorothy Collard and had three sons: Avery b. 1647; William b. 1650 d. 1651 and Timothy b. 1656, christened 5 DEC 1656 at Allhallows, London after his father's death 20 AUG 1656. Timothy (the father) was a London merchant. Timothy, the son, married Elizabeth Foster and had Robert and Joseph.

Kay Baganoff reminded me of another discussion of TERRELLs [4] in my possession. Anderson credits a 1910 genealogy [5] for the following: Richmond Tyrrell came to Virginia about 1656, bought lands, also had a grant of 640 acres in New Kent on the west side of the York River, November 28, 1658 and too another grant of land on Chickahominy River in New Kent, February 8, 1670." [6] There, he or his son by the same name, is found in 1677 in the midst of others we are studying. Kay provided data for marriages in VA between the brother William TERRELL's line and CLARK, MOORMAN, CHILES, MARTIN and even LEWIS families.

The genealogies mostly agree on the above information; it's with the parents of Robert of Reading where they part company. Patricia Stanley came to my rescue again. Within his secton on Robert, son of Sir Edward and his wife, Elizabeth KINGSMILL, Dicken [7] writes: [Robert] "has been confused by some with his COUSIN Robert of Reading ..." Sure enough, going back a few gen erations, all these genealogies eventually re-connect to the same "Sir Somebody" -- either with George b. 1546 d. 1571 or his son Sir Edward, Knight of Thornton. I'll now try to back each line to the first common ancestor for the two "cousins" Robert.

Anderson says ROBERT of Reading's father is William, son of GEORGE Tyrrell who married Eleanor (or Elizabeth) Montagu. This GEORGE is the son of HUMPHREY of Thornton who married Jane Inge. C. M. Terrell says this Humphrey [8] Tyrrell Esq. was born about 1523. His son GEORGE Tyrrell Esq of Thornton was born about 1546 d. 1571. George married Eleanor, daughter of Sir Edward Montagu. Thus we have agreement with these generations.

It appears from Anderson that ROBERT of Reading comes from a second or later born son of GEORGE and Eleanor; his father WIL LIAM married _____ Richmond of Stewly, Bucks. Both C.M. and Roy Terrell follow the heir's line of George and Eleanor -- Sir ED WARD of Thornton and his second wife, Margaret ASTON/ASHTON, daughter of Thomas of Ashton, Cheshire -- and their son, Timothy.

Although Roy Terrell claims this Robert is "of Reading", ap parently it's Robert, son of Sir TIMOTHY Terrell of Oakley in Bucks and his first wife Elizabeth WATSON who is "confused with cousin Robert of Reading". This "son" Robert was disinherited by his father -- ostensibly because he "would not adhere to the strict religious orthodoxy prevailing in England at this time." [9] I'm cynical enough to think of other reasons. In any event, the eldest son of Sir TIMOTHY's second marriage to Eleanor (or Elizabeth) KINGSMILL, daughter of Sir William of Sidmanton, Hants, was the heir of his father.

It is this first son of the second marriage I want to turn to now -- a son named after his father: "Sir Timothy Tyrell, born about 1620, of Oakley, in Bucks, and of Shotover, County of Ox ford, was of the Privy Chamber to King Charles I. He held therank of Colonel in the Royal Army; was Governor of Cardiff;

General of Ordnance under General Lord Girard. He married Elizabeth, only daughter and heir of Rev. Dr. James Usher, Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland, a distinguished writer on Chronol ogy, author of a number of theological works etc. Sir Timothy had ..James ...Charles ...John ...Usher ...Elizabeth ...Mary ...PENELOPE ... Eleanora...Bridget." [10] Please note that this Sir Timothy and Dr. Arthur Johnston were moving in the same circles, same time frame.

C. M. Terrell follows only the line of Sir Timothy [II] son John: "Captain John Tyrrell, born about 1645, died in 1692, the third son of Sir Timothy, married Anne, a lady reputed to have been of very high descent and connections in Scotland and England. From old letters and papers in the family her family name was JOHNSTONE. The next generation gives but three names, and of these we know nothing of the history of James and Henry, except that they were younger than our immediate progenitor, David, who was born about 1670, and lived in Virginia."[11]

The son, David Tirrell, Sr. [12], was "born in 1670, had seven sons and three daughters, viz: David Jr., Thomas, JONATHAN, CHILES, MICAJAH, Pleasant, Henry, a wealthy lawyer in VA, born about 1701, Mary, RACHEL and Susan." Although I don't see a connection, the name "Micajah" appears in an early CHILES line in Virginia. [13]

I admit I'm on very shaky ground here; the reference to the JOHNSTONE / TERRELL marriage falls well within the area of "probably never able to corroborate" statements. And as much as I hate to add yet another undocumentable statement to our growing pile, I feel there is something here. We have a family whose ex tended cousins are "documented" as living in the same area and marrying into our MOORMAN, CLARK and JOHNSON lines. What's more, the given names we've come to associate with these latter families appear in at least one TERRELL line apparently AFTER a marriage to a JOHNSTON(E) "of very high descent and connections in Soctland and England." That description surely fits the Cas kieben JOHNSTONs, but might fit other JOHNSTON families too.

My thoughts are racing with all sorts of possibilities -- at the forefront is "Micajah" being a JOHNSTON name rather than CLARK. Doesn't this suggest a closer look into Oxford, England records? Remember Dr. Arthur Johnston died in Oxford. Should we add CHILES to our growing list of surnames to search for clues? I'm eager to hear your comments; feel free to disagree with any of my conclusions.

Ron, I noticed your interest in the Terrell family on VA Southside. Does any of this fit your line? I'm showing my ancestress, Sarah Chiles, dau. of Micajah Chiles, Sr and Elizabeth Ann Terrell, was b. ca. 1710, mar. Francis Smithson, Sr abt 1728 in Hanover Co. I'll be glad to post to the digest, just wanted to check it out first. I've got an assortment of "stuff" on these families, and would like to compare notes. Jane C. Johnson<3arius3@airmail.net>

I hope this data helps someone. If you find errors, I would welcome and appreciate corrections. All of this data came from secondary sources which we all know are not the best sources. But, if it offers clues to others, then it is still helpful. The line I am interested in is the Keeling line and the first generation Richard Tyler and his son William Tyler. These are the most likely generations to have had other possible Keeling marriages. If anyone can share with me, it would be much appreciated.

It took us forever to find the right thing on this new software to "turn off" the features that was making the VA Southside site refuse my material. I am glad my husband finally conquered that. He surely insures his presence around here by continually putting new software, that I don't understand but need to use, on my computer. That is a neat trick guys. It used to be holding the checkbook that insured a man's presence; now it is knowing more about the computer!

Enjoy.

Ron,

I noted some errors in one of your Rawlings pages re: Catherine Tyler who m. James Maulding (Maulden/Mauldin) c. 1754, Caroline Co. She was likely b. 1735, the daughter of William Tyler (#1) of Essex Co. and came with him, after her unnamed mother died, to Caroline Co., VA c. 1742. Her brother William #2 died in the 1760s, and his death often is mistaken as that of his father, who died in Caroline c. 1794. William #1 was married three times, to Catherine's mother, briefly to a Miss Miller likely of Caroline (possible descendant of Capt. Simon Miller of Essex and Caroline) and Elizabeth Keeling, believed to be daughter of Richard Keeling, son of George. William #1 was an early sheriff of Caroline and well-to-do landowner. James Maulding's father (or grandfather) was the merchant Richard Mauldin(g), who died in 1752 in Caroline Co. - an original magistrate of the county in 1728. James was only married once. He lived in Caroline VA, Orange VA, Cumberland VA, Chatham NC, Fincastle VA, Washington District NC, Cumberland District NC, Robertson TN and Logan KY (not VA), where he died in 1797. Catherine was still alive in 1819.

Just received all of your great files. Thanks!!! I did not want to spend much time researching Judith's lineage until I was sure that she & Jonas were actually the parents of my Hillery J. Weatherford. Three years later and countless microfilms, a week in Salt Lake, etc. I finally got lucky last week and found deeds granting land to Thomas J. Weatherford (who was still living in the 1870 census with his parents) that had formerly been purchased by Jonas. There are four and possibly five deeds (I have ordered a film with a deed between William R.Weatherford and Thomas J. Weatherford which I think may be for the same property)with the siblings as grantors and Thomas J. as grantee, all for $1, in 1872. Thomas then sold the land, so apparently the deeds were to give him clear title to the estate of his parents. What I know of William is from census records, but if I am correct about the deed, it will also give his wife's name and will varify the census info. I also have another 6 rolls of microfilm deeds ordered for the family, but will likely only round out what I already have. Apparently no one has ever researched this family and I will be sending what I have to the Weatherford Family Assoc. which is clueless about Jonas except for his marriage to Judith. They show her father as Nat Rawlins. The file I have attached is for des. of Jonas, but I can send a file of his ancestry as well if you would like it. He was the son of William Weatherford, b. abt. 1753 in Goochland Co., VA and died Jan. 31,1819 in either Lunenburg or Charlotte Co., VA (lived on the border, but most likely in Charlotte Co., where his will was probated in 1819), and Mary Robertson, b. abt. 1760 in VA and died abt. 1830 in prob. Charlotte Co., VA. William and Mary were married Dec. 3,1778. This information is from a Weatherford Family newsletter that I obtained in Salt Lake and I have not yet done my own research to varify it except for some census work. My virus protection is up to date and outgoing emails are scanned, so attachment should be OK.

Thanks again,

Judy Buss

Descendants of Jonas Weatherford

Generation No. 1

1. JONAS7 WEATHERFORD (WILLIAM6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, THOMAS3, WILLIAM2 WHITHEFORD/WEATHERFORD, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1790 in + VA, and died Bet. July 1870 - July 1872 in Morgan Co., IL. He married JUDITH (JUDA/JUDY) RAWLINS August 17, 1814 in Charlotte Co. VA, by Surrogate Littlebury Chafin, daughter of JOHN RAWLINGS and NEFFERY TERRELL. She was born Abt. 1797 in ( or Rawlings/Rollins) Prob. Charlotte Co., VA, and died Bet. July 1870 - July 1872 in Morgan Co., IL.

Notes for JONAS WEATHERFORD:

Jonas Weatherford married Judith Rawlins, Aug. 17,1814, Charlotte Co., VA by Surrogate Littlebury Chafin. ( MInister Returns p. 514, Charlotte Co., VA; "Early American Marriages: Virginia to 1850")

From census listings and birth places of children, it appears that Jonas and his family moved from Kentucky to Illinois between 1830 and 1832.

1820 census of Nicholas Co., KY lists Jonas Weatherford in a household of 3 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 16-26, (engaged in Agriculture marked 1) (M33, roll 20, p. 121).

1830 census of Nicholas Co., KY lists Jonas Weatherford in a household of 1male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 30-40. (M19, roll 40, p. 219)

1835 state census of Morgan Co., IL lists Jonas Weatherford in a household of 3 males ten and under, 2 males 10-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 10 and under, 2 females 10-20, 1 female 30-40. (FHL microfilm #0976178 items 4-7, p. 109.)

1840 census of Morgan Co., IL lists Jonas (indexed Jones) Weatherford in a household of 1 male under five, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 40-50; 1 female under 5, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50 ( M704, Roll 66, p. 432). Page 432 also has a William Weatherford family, with 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30; a female 20-30.

1850 census of Morgan Co., IL lists Jonas Weatherford, age 62, farmer, value of real estate 2000, b. VA; Judith, age 52, b. VA; James, age 18, farmer, b. IL; Thomas, age 14, b. IL. (Roll 122, p. 361).

1860 census of Franklin Twp, Morgan Co., IL lists James (Jonas?) Wetherford, age 68, farmer , value of real estate 400, personal prop. 200, b. VA; Juda, age 63, b. VA; Thomas, age 24, b. IL. (Roll 213, p. 642) (This matches 1850 census info., except for age of Jonas/James, son Thomas's age matches).

1870 census of Franklin Twp., Morgan Co., IL lists Jonas (indexed as Thomas) Weatherford, age 81, retired farmer, value of real estate $800, personal prop. $200, b. VA; Judy Weatherford, age 74, b. VA; Thomas Weatherford, age 35, Saloon Keeper, personal prop. $500, b. IL; Malissa White, age 26, servant, b. IL. (M593-263, p. 103)

Jonas as father of Hillery - also John and William, is based on the fact that they were living close to each other in the 1850 census of Morgan Co., and the 1860 census of Franklin TWP, Morgan Co.. Hillery, John, and William were all born in Kentucky, where we found Jonas living in 1820 and 1830. (see notes for Hillery J. Weatherford). A study of the following Morgan County, IL deeds appears to confirm this.

Jonas appears as grantee in a Morgan Co., IL deed of January 27,1850 (recorded Jan. (14th?) 1857 in which he purchased the SE quarter of the NW quarter of Section thirty, township fourteen, containing 40 acres more or less, from Philip & Nancy Boulware for $100 (Bk. MM, p. 109 - FHL film #1317750). Another Morgan County, IL deed records the purchase of the East-half of Lots #36 and 37, Block 12 of Wyatts Addition in the town of Franklin, Morgan Co., IL by Jonas Weatherford on February 13, 1857 from H. Reinbach & Sophia his wife for $250 (Bk. MM, p. 234 - FHL film #1317750). These two properties were sold on Aug. 1,1872 to Thomas J. Weatherford in four deeds, for $1 each, by John & Malinda Weatherford, James M. & Aggie Weatherford, Hillery and Nancy Weatherford, and (on same deed) Sargeant & Elizabeth Gobble and James & Mary Gillam/Gillum. (Bk. 10, p. 367-370, Morgan Co., IL, FHL microfilm # 1317797). Illinois marriage records show that Elizabeth and Mary's maiden name was Weatherford (see notes for them). It appears that Thomas, James (both known children of Jonas & Judith), John, Hillery, Elizabeth and Mary were siblings, and that Thomas J.'s siblings were signing over their rights to their father's land to him. A deed from William R. Weatherford to Thomas J. Weatherford ( land in Franklin) was recorded on Aug. 1,1874 (I have not yet looked at the original, but may be for the same land as well - JB). Census records indicate there was at least one additional daughter besides Elizabeth & Mary.

Jonas Weatherford appears on several other deeds in Morgan Co., IL as grantor along with Judy/Judith his wife: Jan. 15,1857, Lewis W. Massie, grantee for SE quarter of the SW quarter of Sec. 30, Twshp. 14, and two acres out of the NW corner of the NE quarter of Sec. 31(containing 50 acres in all more or less) for $670 (Bk. MM, p. 151), also on Jan. 15,1557, Josephus H. Cunningham, grantee, NE NW Sec. 30, twnshp. 14, for $1,030. (Bk. MM, p. 371) (Bk MM Morgan Co., IL Deeds - FHL microfilm # 1317750); May 9,1867, John H. Beymer, grantee, Lot 19 in Block 9 in John Wyatts addition to the town of Franklin, $150 + $25 on account (Bk. 3, p. 514) This transaction corrected and recorded on p. 629 of Bk 3; June 3, 1869, Francis M. Scott, grantee, SEcorner of the NW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 31 in township 14..., 10 acres, for $100 - (Bk. 7, p. 279). ( Book 7 Morgan Co., IL Deed - FHL film # 1317795).

Jonas and Judith/Judy signed all deeds with an X which was witnessed.

Children of JONAS WEATHERFORD and JUDITH RAWLINS are:

Notes for MARY ANN WEATHERFORD:

Illinois Marriage Record, Vol. B, p. 59, Lic. #1810.

James and Mary Gillam deeded land to Thomas J. Weatherford for $1 on Aug. 1, 1872 (land purchased by Jonas Weatherford), along with her other siblings. Morgan Co. IL Deeds, Bk. 10, p. 367 - FHL #1317798). (see notes on Jonas)

Notes for JAMES GILLUM/GILLAM:

A James Gillum purchased public land on Map 15,1852 in Effinham Co., IL (113+acres)

6. vi. JAMES M. WEATHERFORD, b. Abt. 1832, +IL (wagon maker); d. Aft. August 1872.

vii. THOMAS J. WEATHERFORD, b. Abt. 1836, +Morgan Co., IL; d. March 11, 1884, Same Thomas????Morgan Co., IL (see notes).

Notes for THOMAS J. WEATHERFORD:

A Thomas Weatherford, b. Morgan Co., IL, d. in Morgan Co., IL on March 11,1884, age stated was 51 yr 2mo 6 da - this appears to be a close match, but needs further research. Buried at Franklin City Cem., Morgan Co. with many other Weatherfords.

A Thomas J. Weatherford is named in deed as grantee by Hillery Weatherford (grantor) in Aug. 1,1872 deed in Morgan Co., IL, He is again named as grantee by James M. Weatherford (grantor) in a deed of the same date, and by Sargent & Elizabeth Gobble and James and Mary Gillam in a deed of the same date. . John Weatherford (grantor) names him in a deed dated Nov. 5, 1872. All of the above four deeds are for the same property and sold for $1 (The East-half of Lots number thirty six and thirty seven in block number 12 Wyatts Addition in the town of Franklin, Morgan Co., IL - this same property was sold to Jonas Weatherford by H. Reinback and Sophia his wife on Feb. [3rd or 13th?] 1857) and on the same date Thomas J. Weatherford as grantor names Wm. H. Barnes as grantee, apparently for the same property in Wyatts Franklin (Morgan Co., IL). On Aug. 1,1874, Wm. R. Weatherford, et al (grantor) names Thomas J. Weatherford as grantee (Morgan Co., IL.) It appears that Thomas J. Weatherford, the youngest son (as appears in the census) of Jonas and Judith Weatherford, was "sold for $1, the rights of his siblings in their parents estate.

A Thomas J. Weatherford married Nancy J. Graham on Aug. 31,1875 in Morgan Co., IL. Is this this Thomas or his nephew Thomas, son of his brother John?

1776? IN REVOLUTIONARY WAR?

Supposedly he was Captain in John Gillison's, 10th Virginia Regt, Col. Edward Stevens Command during the Revolutionary War. Note that Edmund Terrill was definitely in that regiment. See below.

As found in the National Archives

Jan. 27, 1777...Enlisted for 3 year term. Rank is listed as Sgt. in all below records, and he is found in Capt. John Gillison's Company in all below entries, except the last, regardless of regiment or commander. Location from this enlistment date to below first muster roll is unknown, and may have been inactive until March. Mar. 28 to Dec., 1777...10th VA Regiment, commanded by Col. Edward Stevens, who is a Brig. Gen. later in the war.

Jan. to Mar., 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Major Samuel Hawes. Maj. Hawes is later found as a Col., commanding 5th VA Regiment heroically in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in NC in 1781, and in Hobkirk's Hill Battle after that. Edmond is listed as being mustered at Valley Forge during these dates.

April to May, 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Green, who is later found as commanding the 4th VA Regiment in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Edmund is still listed as being at Valley Forge during these dates, confirming that he was present in the infamous period of cold, starvation and deprivation. He did not desert, as many did.

June to July, 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Green, listed as being at Camp White Plains (NY) during those dates.

Aug, 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. William Russell, located at White Plains.

Sept., 1778...Same as in last entry, but located at "Camp Robinson's Farm."

Oct. to Nov., 1778...6th VA Regiment, also commanded by Col. William Russell, located at Middlebrook.

Dec., 1778 to April 15th 1779...6th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Green, assigned to Camp Middlebrook, but listed as being on furlough during these

dates. There was no action in the winter, and many of the men were sent home on furlough, rather than having to feed and clothe them.

May to June, 1779...Same as last entry, but listed as being at Camp Smith's Clove during these dates.

July to Sept., 1779...Same as above, but listed as being at Camp Ramapo (NJ)

Oct. to Nov., 1779...Same, but listed at Camp Haverstraw (NJ).

Dec., 1779 to Mar 1780...2nd VA Brigade, Commanded by Col. Febiger, and in Capt. John Steed's Co. This winter was as hard as Valley Forge. Edmund was apparently discharged from 3 yr. enlistment in March of 1780.

I got the above from photocopies of actual payroll records I obtained from the National Archives. Edmund was my ancestor. My line from my grandmother Anne Calvin Terrill is: Anne Calvin; John Robert; William; Robert; Edmund(this one); Robert; Timothy (immigrant).

Notes for SALLY RAWLINGS:

Probably born in Halifax Co, Va since her father appears to have lived there from 1767-1771 then moved to Charlotte Co., VA.

Found in 1850 Smith Co., TN census (KEJ) but not in 1860. So likely died 1850-1860 unless she moved. but in 1860 she would be about 90 so it is unlikely that she moved.

From the information that I have Archibald first married Letty Rolins in Charlotte Co. Va. and bought land there in 1801 which was sold to Travis Brooks 1805. In 1815 he bought land from William (Billy) Fowlkes of Nottoway Co. which he had been leasing. His will probated in Charlotte Co. 1/15/1818 and recorded in WB4-163 names his second wife Tabytha H. Fowlkes and appoints his brother Edward B. Fowlkes as the executor. This will names the following Children:

1. William A. 12/11/1803 md. Elizabeth B. Ellis 7/21/1824 LU Co. VA

2. Martha A.

This is all the information I have on Archibald Fowlkes. Sorry I could help any further.

Notes for MARGARET (PEGGY) RAWLINGS:

JoLee - 1850 Rutherford Co TN Census (check Co)

The Margaret Pearson age 70 b. VA in the household of Wm Pearson is surely John b. Pearson's widow, Margaret Rawlings, dau of my John Rawlings of Charlotte. That would make her born c1780 so it is iffy whether she was the last of the children of John's wife #1 or the the first of his second wife Neff Terrell.

It seems strange that Joseph Pearson 38 was b in TN and Leonilla Pearson 37 was b in VA (maybe she underestimated her age!). John B Pearson's oldest child would probably be about 43 since they were md 1 July 1806.

It does seem strange, but more than one census has to be read to get a true picture. I don't *think* there could be an error in the way I read it, because in my notes. I have:

Dwell 904 Wm Jacobs 21 Farmer b. Tenn

Nancy " 23 "

Willis B. 9/12 "

Joseph Rolins 38 Farm " (I wrote out "ditto" to show it was orig.)

Lenilla " 37 VA

Margaret 13 Tenn (I wrote this out as shown on cen.)

Dwell 905 Wm Pearson 23 Farm " (I wrote out ditto)

Susan " 18 " (wrote out ditto)

Margaret " 1 " (wrote out ditto)

Margaret " 70 VA

David " 27 None Tenn (wrote out to show that is the way it was.)

>I notice that the surety for the the John B. Pearson - Margaret Rawlings marriage is Thomas Lee. Could this Thomas Lee be of the same family as the Jane Lee Pearson-Johnston?

***I am confident that is the same Thomas Lee, as don't think there was another nearby.

Ron,

My source for the Rawlings information you mention is Dwight Needens' book, The Lives of Matthias Hoover and His Children, which he completed just last month and is selling at a very reasonable price. Other than the deeds and will book references, the book doesn't include sources, and I haven't yet asked him for them. The book covers Matthias' children and grandchildren, their basic vital stats, spouses and general information about where they lived, if known. It doesn't give the great-grandchildren's names, but does say how many there were, so Dwight may actually have that data also. You can write to Dwight at dwight2k@juno.com for more information. The source for other Rawlings information I previously had was mostly found in handwritten notes in the vertical files at the Hermann Brown Free Library in Burnet, Texas. They were in a folder on the Hoover family. I did not know at the time to look for a Rawlings file in that library, and haven't been back there in a couple of years. Sorry, I just noticed that I transposed the consonants in your last name when I wrote that query response. My apologies! I'll probably not be very active with genealogy now until after April 15 if you know what I mean! But you will hear from me again! Hope the weather is as nice in your neck of the woods as it was here today! Kathy

I believe there are also children David c 1823 and Joseph.

CHARLOTTE CO, VA QUERY FORUM Leonila (Lorilla) Pearson & Joseph Allison Rawlings

Posted by Kathy Hoover <kathyhoover@att.net> on Sun, 18 Mar 2001, in response to Re: PEARSON, posted by Ron Bourassa on Fri, 3 Apr 1998

Surname: PEARSON, RAWLINGS, HOOVER

I've received information that Lorilla (your Leonila?) PEARSON was married ca 1835 Joseph Allison RAWLINGS, probably in Rutherford Co. TN. He was married twice, and had a total of 8 children. Joseph's other wife was Susan Keele. Joseph Allison RAWLINGS was the son of William RAWLINGS, b. ca 1788 and Sarah HOOVER b. ca 1806, dau of Matthias & Mary(Maria) HOOVER. Also my notes show that Mary "Polly" RAWLINGS (dau/of John Rawlings & Neffery Terrell) was married to John B. PEARSON in 1805... I think that came from one of Ron Bousarra's previous queries on the Charlotte Co. VA Genconnect board. Have you since learned that Margaret "Peggy" is the correct wife for John B. or did he marry them both??

Notes for NANCY RAWLINGS:

From Dwight Needums:

Nancy, on Aug 15, 1829 in Rutherford Co., TN, md Pleasant Jacobs b 1808-1809 who was a relative of Clinton Jacobs, who md Nancy's first cousin, Mary Elizabeth Pruett, dau. of Mary "Polly" (Hoover) Pruett & John Bradford Pruett. (Marriage date from John Lee Fults who also says Jacobs was a son of Green B. and Sarah Jacobs. No marriage record found - date perhaps from family Bible.)

1830 Census Rutherford Co, TN, pg305, Pleasant Jacobs

One male 20-30 (Pleasant Jacob)

One female 20-30 (Nancy Jacobs, formerly Nancy Rawlings)

1850, 60, and 70 census gives children

Notes for PLEASANT JACOBS:

This is confusing. The Rutherford Co 1850 census seems to have Nancy b in 1827 and Wm Jacobs b in 1729. Check my own records on this.

>The Margaret Pearson age 70 b. VA in the household of Wm Pearson is surely John b. Pearson's widow, Margaret Rawlings, dau of my John

>Rawlings of Charlotte.

>

Child is listed above under (10) Leonila Pearson.

18. CHRISTOPHER H.4 RAWLINGS (JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born August 16, 1818 in TN, and died November 09, 1870. He married ELIZABETH KEELE August 03, 1841.

Child of CHRISTOPHER RAWLINGS and ELIZABETH KEELE is:

i. THOMAS P.5 RAWLINGS, m. SARAH EPPLEY.

19. GERMAN BAKER4 RAWLINGS (JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Bet. 1823 - 1827 in Rutherford Co., TN. He married SARAH JONES May 25, 1848 in Rutherford Co., TN.

Notes for GERMAN BAKER RAWLINGS:

Ron Myers http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/myers2/11848 has wife listed as Nancy __ and 6 children:

1.Joseph Willis ROLLINS

2.William ROLLINS

3.Emily ROLLINS

4.Sarah ROLLINS

5.Samuel ROLLINS

6.Annie ROLLINS

The connection of this set of children to German Baker Rawlings is, at this point, an educated guess of Ron Myers.

Children of GERMAN RAWLINGS and SARAH JONES are:

25. i. JOSEPH WILLIS?5 RAWLINGS, b. January 15, 1871, TX or AR; d. June 26, 1940, Altus, Jackson Co., OK.

20. NANCY N.4 RAWLINGS (JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born January 22, 1828 in Rutherford Co., TN, and died Aft. 1860. She married ROBERT W. LOWE October 01, 1846 in Rutherford Co., TN. He was born Abt. 1826 in TN, and died Bet. 1857 - 1860 in Rutherford Co., TN.

Notes for NANCY N. RAWLINGS:

Listed on 1860 as Nancy H. and on marriage record as Nancy N. also listed on 1850 census. Both give children.

Children of NANCY RAWLINGS and ROBERT LOWE are:

i. SARAH5 LOWE, b. Abt. 1848.

ii. SAMUEL RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1846 - 1863.

iii. WILEY MONTGOMERY RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1846 - 1863.

22. JOHN E.4 RAWLINGS (JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1797 in Charlotte Co., VA, and died Aft. 1850. He married ELIZABETH ANN GOODE January 18, 1820 in Charlotte Co., VA, daughter of EDWARD GOODE and JOICE HOLMES. She was born Bet. 1800 - 1801 in Charlotte Co., VA, and died Aft. 1850.

I found your home page today. My gggrandfather was married in Charlotte Co, Virginia in 1818. His name was William Rawlins and married Martha M. Goode, dau of Edward Goode, (shown as deceased in October 1818) (Martha M. Goode may be the sister of Betsy Ann Goode, dau of Edward Goode, Married to John Rawlins in Charlotte Co, Va, January 18, 1820)

Notes for ELIZABETH ANN GOODE:

Here are notes to fill in for the Elizabeth Ann Goode born 11 Jan 1820 who married John E. Rawlins..

Parents of Elizabeth Ann Holmes born 11 Jan 1820 were Edward Goode and Joice Holmes. (Must be giving the marriage date instead of the birth date).

Joice Holmes was daughter of Samuel Holmes and second wife Prudence Clark. Samuel Holmes was born 27 May 1731 Henrico County Virginia, son of Samuel and Ann Holmes; his birth and parents recorded in Bristol Parish Register. Prudence Clark at the time of her marriage to Samuel Holmes was (A) dau of George Clark and Prudence his wife and (B) widow of Dr. Clack Courtney. Notes, unproven, say that Dr. Courtney died about 1772 and that widow Prudence Clark Countney married Saml Holmes about 1775. Notes also say that Joice Holmes married Edward Goode, Mecklenburg County Va on 18 Dec 1798 bondsman Richard Cox, married by Chas Ogburn, Methodist Minister.

Samuel Holmes and wife Ann, parents of Samuel Holmes born 1731, came from Henrico to Brunswick/Lunenburg County about 1732/3. Sam died 1766 in new county of Mecklenburg just formed.

Note that Joice Goode was living in Mecklenburg Co in 1850 at the age of 72.

From Clare,

Hello, Ron. I can't document too much. I do have the book I mentioned "Yesterday When It Is Past". My great uncle, David Rawlings Morris, had underlined certain parts and made handwritten notations in the margins. One in particular is that Elizabeth (Betsy) Ann Goode married John Rawlings. They had a son, Walter, who married Marie Sigourney Hughart (daughter of Dr. William H. and Martha Jane Valentine). This I CAN document becuase they are ALL buried in Hertford, NC (Perquimans county) Episcopal Church cemetery: Walter Marette Rawlings B:July 31, 1838 in Charlotte county, VA D:September 2, 1897 (Company B 39th VA Calvalry Confederate States of America). Married to: Marie Sigourney Hughart B:August 6,1842 in Richmond, VA D:April 6,919. They had four children:(1) Marie Blanche Rawlings (Morris) (She is my great grandmother)B:November 15,1867 D:Oct.31,1956 (2) Ellen Goode Rawlings (Winslow) B:Jan.30,1869 D:Mar.30,1946 (3) Pattie Valentine Rawlings (Edwards) B:Mar.25,1874 D:Dec.26,1947 (4) Walter Hughart Rawlings B:July 3,1871 D:Dec.20,1941. Marie Blanche Rawlings Morris is buried in New Bern,NC. All of the others are buried in Hertford,NC. I feel certain (after looking at your info) that the John I'm looking for is the John that died in Lunenburg county in 1754. His son, William, must be the g-g-grandfather of Walter. The information I am drawing from is the Goode family book and the History of Perquimans county. I do not know how the Rawlings family ended up in Perquimans county. I can not find them mentioned in that book. This is the way it looks to me: John D:1754 had a son, John, who had two sons, John & William. William had a son, John who had a son, John(married Betsy Goode) who had a son, Walter(married Marie Hughart) who had 4 children. One of their children was Marie Blanche. She married Edward Everette Morris. They had 3 children. One of their children was Blanche Clare. She married Garrason Farrow. They had 2 children. One of their children was Blanche Rawlings. She married Thomas J. Mitchell, III. They had one child. That child is ME! Clare Rawlings. I would love to be able to go back to John & William and get more inf. on them. I wish I could tell you more, but I really don't have much. Let me know if you could use any thing I gave you. I will keep searching in the library and other places. You had one person who signed your guest book, Charles D. Rawlins, who responded and it seems we might be related thru the Goodes. Thanks for all of your hard work. Let's keep in touch. Clare Good morning, Ron. I'm up early this morn. Yes, you are correct to assume that the maiden name for Martha Jane is Valentine. Here are the birth, death and marriage dates that I have: Walter Marette Rawlings B:July31,1838 D:Sept.2,1897 M:Marie Sigourney Hughart (They both are buried in Hertford, NC Episcopal Church yard cemetery) Children of Walter Rawlings and Marie Hughart: Marie Blanche Rawlings B:Nov.15,1867 D:Oct.31,1956 M:Edward Everette Morris (They are both buried in New Bern, NC Cedar Grove Cemetery) Ellen Goode Rawlings B:Jan30,1869 D:March30,1946 M:Watson Winslow Jan.16,1889 in Perquimans County,NC (They are both buried in Hertford,NCEpiscopal Church yard cemetery) Pattie Valentine Rawlings B:March25,1874 D:Dec.26,1947 M:W.F.C. Edwards (Register of Deeds, Perquimans County) (They are both buried in Hertford,NC Episcopal Church yard cemetery) Walter Hughart Rawlings B:July3,1871 D:Dec.20,1941 (He never married)(He is buried in Hertford,NC Episcopal Church yard cemetery) I hope you can use this information. It took me a long time to get it and it is nice to be able to share it with someone. I am really interested in finding out more about John E., John and William. There are so many John Rawlings that don't belong to us. I guess it just takes patience. Talk to you later. Clare
