Darbellay returns for another
starring role
26th June 2000 - A month out of the game hasn't
dulled the skills of sensational rookie Adrian Darbellay as
he led Shamrocks to another critical win in the Queensland
Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the weekend.
Darbellay, from Riverhills, had not played since May due
to a wrist injury, but still slotted away 3 goals 4 points
as Shamrocks beat last year's championship runners-up John
Mitchels by 6 points.
Shamrocks have now beaten both of last season's
championship finalists in consecutive weeks to emerge as
serious title contenders in the senior mens division.
Brisbane's western suburbs club also won their ladies
match over the weekend, defeating John Mitchels by 40 points
to remain on top of the league.
Pullenvale's Shirley Jensen - the Shamrocks first choice
goalkeeper - recorded the first point of her career with a
well-timed run the length of the field to score.
In the mens reserves game, Shamrocks lost to Harps
despite Graceville's John Collins scoring on debut.
Shamrocks are back in the race
19th June 2000 - Shamrocks are back in contention
in the Queensland Gaelic Football League after demolishing
the defending championship winners at Willawong over the
weekend.
Brisbane's western suburbs club defeated Easts in the
senior mens competition by 16 points to end a miserable run
of just one win in seven games.
Stephen Mulligan, from County Tyrone, Ireland, was
inspirational for Shamrocks with 2 goals 5 points, while
fellow Irishman Graham Walsh from County Meath was
outstanding with 1 goal 2 points.
Riverhills' Matthew Walsh was the critical player for
Shamrocks by keeping Easts' Australasian representative out
of the game.
Glenn Carpenter of Oxley, just back from securing a
County Meath club championship medal, was also a decisive
contributor at full back.
Shamrocks also won the ladies match against Easts, led by
Brookfield's Jacqueline Peacock with 3 goals 2 points, to
remain on top of the league.
Fourteen-year-old Naomi Devitt of Pallara scored her
first point for Shamrocks to show she is a star of the
future.
In the mens reserves game, Shamrocks lost to Easts by a
solitary point despite Westlake's improving father-son
combination of player-coach Michael Joyce and Damian Joyce.
Queensland League opens up
6th June 2000 - The Queensland Gaelic Football
League is blasted wide open with the previously unbeaten
Shamrocks ladies team losing for the first time this season
by a solitary point at Willawong over the weekend.
Despite losing to Harps 2-3 (9) to 1-7 (10), the Brisbane
western suburbs Shamrocks club remains top of the Queensland
ladies league.
Springwood's Michelle O'Malley and Angie Doyle of
Coorparoo both played well for Shamrocks in the match.
Harps, championship winners when combined with Souths in
1998, now move into second place as the form team of the
competition.
Shamrocks ladies just keep
winning
29 May 2000 - Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club
showed no signs of a hangover from winning their third
consecutive ladies Brisbane Shield recently, with a
comprehensive victory over Sarsfields in the ladies
Queensland League at Willawong over the weekend.
The Brisbane western suburbs ladies team remained
undefeated two months into the season with their 28-point
triumph.
Jindalee's Laurena Graham and Sue Hoyle from Corinda both
scored in positive performances up forward, while Angie
Doyle from Coorparoo continually drove the ball from the
centre.
Hannah Humphrys of Geebung was once again solid in
defence as she attacked the ball to help start the attack
for Shamrocks.
Prior to the mens game, Shamrocks held a tribute to
Corroboree 2000 with a didgeridoo ceremony led by club
captain Dan Fraser from Eagleby, and attended by the
president of the Gaelic Athletic Association of Australasia,
Seamus Sullivan.
Shamrocks win third straight
Brisbane Shield
22 May 2000 - The Shamrocks club continued its
stranglehold on Queensland Gaelic Football's opening trophy
of the season by winning its third consecutive ladies
Brisbane Shield at Willawong over the weekend.
The Brisbane western suburbs club beat championship
holders Souths by six points to win the Brisbane Shield for
the third time in three years, and remain undefeated atop
the Queensland ladies league ladder.
Shamrocks enjoyed outstanding players all over the field,
with Angie Doyle from Coorparoo and Brookfield's Jacqueline
Peacock continually running the ball forward. Bardon's Renee
Moynihan led the scoring with 1 goal 2 points.
Hannah Humphrys from Geebung and Graceville's Trish
McGirl-Duell hit the ball hard in defence to restrict the
normally free-scoring opposition to just three scoring shots
for the match.
Shamrocks won 2-7 (13) to 2-1 (7) but could easily have
won by more, given their domination of possession for long
stretches.
The president of the Gaelic Athletic Association of
Australasia, Seamus Sullivan, presented the trophies after
the match, remarking on the extremely high standard of the
game and growing popularity of ladies Gaelic football in
Queensland.
Australasian and Shamrocks player Jacqueline Peacock will
continue her primary school girls and boys Gaelic football
coaching again this Sunday from 10am at Gaelic Park, Bowhill
Road, Willawong.
