Australasia are World Cup champions

Australasian logo23 September 2000 - The Australasian ladies Gaelic football team – boasting five Queenslanders including three from Brisbane's Shamrocks club – won the World Cup final in Ireland this morning Australian time.

It took 20 minutes of extra time before Australasia beat North America by just three points 2-12 to 2-9 in a thrilling final at Parnell Park, Dublin.

Australasia was competing in the World Cup for only the first time, and earlier in the tournament had twice beaten defending champions London, including in the semi final. It was heartbreak for North America who has now lost two consecutive World Cup finals.

Five Queenslanders were in the Australasia team, including three from Brisbane’s progressive Shamrocks club – Angie Doyle, Jacqueline Peacock, and Louise O’Neill.

Australasian scorers in the final were: Renae Campbell (0-1), Simone Cairns (0-1), Edel O'Gorman (1-7), Sue Smith (1-0), Louise Gianaostino (0-1), Julia Boyle (0-1), Catriona McGahan (0-1)

The Australasian mens team lost in the semi final stage to London by a solitary point.

Their only loss so far has been a narrow 3-point defeat by competition leaders North America.

Australasia beat defending World Cup champions

19 September 2000 - The Australasian ladies team opened their World Cup with a stunning 5-point win over defending champions London, in Dublin this morning Australian time.

In scant early reports from Shamrocks' Jacqueline Peacock, who started at wing back for Australasia, they won 2-7 to 1-5.

The win places Australasia atop the standings after round one, equal with the other winners North America and Rest of Britain, both of which had comprehensive victories over Canada and Europe respectively.

Australasia now faces an even bigger challenge when they play the two other undefeated teams, Rest of Britain and North America, on day two of competition.

The Australasian mens team also enjoyed a win to open the World Cup - a narrow two point win over London, 1-6 to 0-7. Other winners were North America and Rest of Britain, mirroring the ladies results.

Heartbreak in World Cup tour opener

13 September 2000 - There was heartbreak for the Shamrocks' Jacqueline Peacock when she was forced to sit out Australasia's first tour match in Ireland because of injury, early today Australian time.

Jacqueline was slated to start at left half back against Dublin County, but injured her shoulder in the final training session, according to telephone reports today.

She is now undergoing intensive physiotherapy in a bid to be ready for Australasia's next preliminary match against Monaghan County, before the World Cup starts this weekend Australian time.

Dublin won the match 6-15 to 1-3 after Australasia played with nerves for the opening 20 minutes, before settling down to play well for the rest of the match, although lacked finishing in front of goals.

Jacqueline's Shamrocks team mate Angie Doyle started at the unfamiliar position of full back but played well, as did fellow Shamrock Louise O'Neill who came on also in the backs.

Other Queenslanders Melissa Lee and Colette Byrne also received playing time.

Australasia's senior mens team played the Allied Irish Bank senior team led by All-Ireland Championship medal winner Edna Gormley of Derry. AIB won 2-15 to 1-2.
