Shamrocks snap up Queensland awards
16 September 2002 - Two brothers from the Shamrocks Gaelic football club secured major annual awards from the Queensland Gaelic Football Association this week.
Matt Scandrett (pictured left) was named Senior Mens Best First Year Player for 2002, and younger brother Brendan Scandrett (pictured right) won the Best and Fairest Under 18 Player award.
Brendan, in his first season of Gaelic football, was also runner-up for the Best and Fairest award in the reserves competition.
The Scandrett brothers are among the favourites to also take out awards at the Shamrocks’ annual club awards to be announced at Irish O’Hanlon’s at Kenmore this Saturday night.
The honour of winning the Queensland awards come after Brisbane’s western suburbs Shamrocks club bowed out at the semi final stage in both the senior mens and ladies championship competitions earlier this month.
Two Shamrocks ladies players – Angie Doyle and Natalie Hughes – are currently in Ireland with the Australasian team preparing for the up-coming Gaelic football World Cup.
In Queensland championship finals over the weekend, John Mitchels won the senior mens for the first time in four years, Souths won the ladies for the first time in three years, and Harps the reserve mens for the second consecutive season.
Shamrocks are proudly sponsored by Irish O’Hanlon’s East Coast Gravel, and Access Ireland Holidays.
Shamrocks
miss Championship final after overtime
10 September 2002 -
Sarsfields advanced to their first Queensland Gaelic football senior
championship final in a decade by beating Shamrocks in overtime at
Willawong on the weekend.
Brisbane’s western
suburbs Shamrocks led by two points at the break thanks to two early
goals by Travis Basset, and by as much as six points midway through the
second half.
Sarsfields, who last
won the championship in 1991, then started a comeback that leveled the
scores at 12-all to send the semifinal into overtime.
Shamrocks eventually
went down by two points, 3-5-14 to 1-13-16.
Best for Shamrocks
were Bassett, Glenn Carpenter in goals, and David Duguid in defense.
Shamrocks ladies ended
their Queensland championship defense at the semi final stage with a
13-point loss to Souths on the weekend.
Missing several Gaelic
football World Cup players and other regulars, Shamrocks were unable to
repeat their win over Souths of a couple of weeks ago.
Best for Shamrocks
were Patty Preece and Renee Moynihan.
The weekend results mean
that the Shamrocks club goes trophy-less for the first season in five
years.
The Championship finals this
Sunday are John Mitchels v Sarsfields in the senior men, Souths v Harps
in the reserve mens, and Souths v John Mitchels in the ladies.
