Double-trophy game this
Sunday
31 August 1999 - The Shamrocks club faces a
dramatic climax to the Queensland Gaelic Football League
after the stormy and explosive weekend in Brisbane.
The last games of the league season were washed out by
thunderstorms that blew at least one southeast Queensland
home apart. That has left Brisbane's western suburbs
Shamrocks to play Souths this Sunday, in a match that will
decide both the Queensland League title as well as the
Gaelic Athletic Association Trophy.
The Shamrocks club is trying to extend its unprecedented
dominance of Queensland Gaelic Football that has already
netted five trophies this season, including the Brisbane
Shields in all three grades, and the League titles in both
the Ladies and Mens Reserves.
Both the Shamrocks Ladies and Mens Reserves teams also
play in the GAA Trophy final at Willawong this Sunday.
The Queensland Championship final - the last and major
trophy of the Queensland Gaelic Football season - is
scheduled for Willawong on September 19.

Shamrocks one win away from sixth
trophy
23 August 1999 - The domination of Brisbane's
western suburbs Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club will be
enhanced by clinching the mens senior Queensland League
title at Willawong this weekend.
The club has already won a treble of Brisbane Shields in
all three grades this season, and the Shamrocks Senior Mens
team could now add to the Ladies and Mens Reserves League
titles already secured, by beating Souths this Sunday.
Shamrocks prepared for the big clash over the weekend by
restricting John Mitchells to a solitary point in the second
half, to win 1-12 (15) to 3-3 (12).
Mick Joyce from Westlake led Shamrocks with 1 goal 2
points, Durack's favourite son Paul McNally had 4 points,
while Jindalee's Casey Graham scored 3 points.
The Shamrocks Ladies side secured their first ever league
title with a walkover win against Easts on the weekend. They
still have one game to play.
Shamrocks Reserve Mens won their league title, also for
the first time and with a game to play, with a well earned
9-point win over Sarsfields. They were led by Matthew
Shakhousky from Fig Tree Pocket with 1 goal 1 point, Acacia
Ridge's Robbie White's 1 goal, and Harold Peacock from
Brookfield with 2 points.
Shamrocks have won all five trophies in the Queensland
Gaelic Football Association so far this season, with a sixth
possibly to be won this weekend. All three Shamrocks teams
have qualified for the GAA Trophy finals in a fortnight,
followed by the Championship to cap the history-making
season.

Shamrocks one win away from league
titles
16 August 1999 - More history is on the verge of
being created in the Queensland Gaelic Football League by
the Shamrocks club starting this weekend.
The Brisbane western suburbs club is just one win away in
each of the three divisions from clinching an unprecedented
three league titles - no Queensland club has ever achieved
that in the same season in the history of the league.
Shamrocks must beat Souths in a fortnight to secure the
Senior Mens league title, while the Shamrocks Ladies and
Reserve Mens teams can clinch the trophy by winning this
Sunday.
The club has already made history this season by winning
the Brisbane Shield in all three grades.
Over the weekend, Shamrocks Seniors came from behind to
beat an in-form Sarsfields side by 4 points 3-7 to 2-6, led
by Jindalee's Casey Graham with two goals.
In the Reserves, Shamrocks beat Souths by 7 points 2-9 to
1-5 after extending their lead in the second half against
the wind.
Corinda's Billy Rockett fired home one of the goals of
the season from a seemingly impossible angle and on the
wrong side for a right footer. Mick Joyce from Westlake
contributed 1 goal 3 points in his best performance of the
season.
Meanwhile the Shamrocks Ladies defeated Harps by 23
points, with both Jackie Meehan of Hamilton and Dutton
Park's Mary O'Sullivan playing very well in the forwards.
Run home has a tragic note
9 August 1999 - Two Shamrocks players tragically
undergo knee surgery this week with just a handful of league
games left in the Queensland Gaelic Football League.
Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks are top of the
ladder in all three divisions, but the record-breaking
Ladies team have two key players undergoing surgery at this
critical time of the season.
Queensland representative Renee Moynihan from Bardon will
undergo a knee reconstruction at the Holy Spirit Hospital on
Thursday 19 August, while Forest Lake's Susie Caldwell faces
an exploratory urethroscope at a Brisbane Sports Clinic on
Sunday 15 August.
Susie appeared likely to be selected to represent
Queensland to compete at the Australasian Gaelic Games this
year before suffering the injury.
Both players will miss the remaining league games for
Shamrocks, as well as the GAA Trophy final, and the
Championship.
Meanwhile over the weekend, the five-game winning streak
of the Shamrocks Mens Reserve team came to an end with a
13-point loss to Easts.
For Shamrocks, Corinda's Stuart Meiklejohn scored 1 goal
1 point, and Seamus Farrell of Chapel Hill scored 3 points.
Both players compiled their score in just one half of
action.
Brent Nolan from The Gap played very well for Shamrocks
in defence.
All three Shamrocks teams are in action at Willawong this
Sunday, with wins critical for all sides in the race for
league medals.
Field of upsets as League opens
up
1 August 1999 - Shamrocks still lead, but not by
as much with just weeks to play, after upsets swept the
Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the
weekend.
Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks lost the Senior Mens
game to third-placed Easts by a solitary point 2-10 (16) to
3-8 (17), but still lead the League with two games to play.
Dutton Park's Denis Cronin scored 8 points, 7 of which
came in the first half, while Indooroopilly's Adam Brandis
was outstanding in defence for the league leaders.
Shamrocks Ladies' record 10-win start to the season came
to an end with a 5-point loss to second-placed Souths 4-3
(15) to 6-2 (20), but they too maintain the advantage in the
League ladder with four games to play.
The result came after Shamrocks Ladies lost focus in the
second half, after leading by 6 points at the break.
Shamrocks Reserve Men beat second-placed
Sarsfields/Mitchells by 6 points 1-6 (9) to 0-3 (3) to
extend their lead atop the Reserves ladder, thanks to an
outstanding all-round game from Jamie Simmons of Red Hill.
The biggest upset of the round came in the Senior Mens
competition when Sarsfields recorded their first win in two
years, beating John Mitchells by 3-8 (17) to nil. That may
be the first time in John Mitchells' 12-year club history
that they were held scoreless.
Shamrocks continue winning
charge
19 July 1999 - Shamrocks created more history over
the weekend with their biggest win against traditional
powers John Mitchells in over five years in the Queensland
Gaelic Football League at Willawong.
Brisbane's western suburbs club won the Senior mens match
2-13 (19) to 1-2 (5) to prove their recent record domination
of the Brisbane Shield was no fluke, and remain on top of
the league ladder.
Dutton Park's Denis Cronin, who has attracted national
media coverage recently both in Australia and at home in
County Kerry, Ireland, again led the Shamrock charge with 2
goals.
He was well supported by team captain Casey Graham from
Jindalee with 7 points, and Brookfield's Harold Peacock on 3
points. Oxley's own David Shakhousky thrilled the crowd with
his first point of the season.
Shamrocks Ladies team extended their unbeaten start to
the season to 10 consecutive wins, thanks to a 34 point
victory over Sarsfields, led by Hamilton's Jackie Meehan
with 3 goals, and 12-year-old Renee Kelly from Mt Gravatt on
2 goals.
In the Reserve mens, Shamrocks defeated Easts, in a
re-match of the recent Brisbane Shield final, by a solitary
point. Eagleby's Kieren Blake and Tim Mapely from Milton had
stunning debuts, with 3 points apiece, to keep their new
side atop the reserves ladder.
Shamrocks recently became the first club to win the
Brisbane Shield in all three grades in the same season. The
western suburbs club, that trains at Jindalee, is currently
also top of the league ladder is all three grades.
Shamrocks welcome back star
Stevens
5 July 1999 - Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club
received great news this week with star wing forward Scott
Stevens expected to be back from illness within a fortnight.
The Queensland representative from Westlake was expected
to be sidelined until mid-August after being hospitalised
with meningitis on the eve of the Shamrocks' recent Brisbane
Shield success. But this week the return of Stevens to
Brisbane's western suburbs club was brought forward to July
18.
That is good news for Shamrocks as they work to build on
their unprecedented Brisbane Shield treble, when the club
won the Queensland Gaelic Football League's first trophy of
the season in the Mens Seniors, Mens Reserves, and Ladies
divisions.
Upcoming challenges for Shamrocks, with Stevens back to
full fitness, include the GAA Trophy and League titles,
followed by the coveted Championship in September.
