4th September 2008
Hi everyone. Here's the latest update. We will be hosting the Teeside Championship this Sunday and the 50th Tyne Tees tournament in a couple of weeks. We have had to stop taking names for our beginners courses as we now have a HUGE waiting list. This is going to take us upto possibly easter 2009 to catch up. Sorry to everyone who wants to learn.
8 February 2008
Hi everyone. Here's the latest update. Following our AGM we have had a swap around in the committee. The changes for those who don't know are as follows:-
Christine McGowan has become Secretary.
John Anderson has taken over the role of Deputy Child Protection Officer.
Michael McGowan has become Chairman.
Dave Johnston continues as Treasurer and Greg Salvini keeps the job as Records Officer.
Due to the move to Framwellgate School we have been able to drop the club fees, which is great news! The drop is from £135.00 to £100.00 for adults and for under 18's the drop is from £65.00 to £50.00.
24 December 2007
Hi everyone. Here's the latest update. In the new year we'll be running three or four club coaching sessions which will include equipment setup. If your interested please contact Mike or Paul Thompson for details.
The sports hall will be closed on the 11th and 12th of January so all the lights can be renewed.
7th November 2006
Well after quite some time our website has now been updated. I (Mike McGowan) have now taken over the maintenance of the website from David Forster who originally designed and wrote the code....Thanks for all your efforts over the years David we really appreciate it. I have updated the site with details of our new shooting venue and the changes to the times/days of the week among other things. I will now try and keep the website updated as often as I can.
28 January 2004
I have added a link to the NCAS shooting calendar in the 'Calendar' web page. I have also added links to the entry forms for a couple of local archery shoots.
17 January 2004
Hello and welcome to a new year!
I've updated the web site with a new 'Calendar' page to show what we will be upto in the next 3 months, thanks to Becky for the timetable.
I've added the past 2 years club minutes to the 'Minutes' page, thanks again to Becky for that.
The Saturday shooting times are listed on the 'Calendar' web page
I shall get around to creating a gallery page dedicated to club photo's soon. I need to reduce the memory size of the photos we currently have and will present them as thumbnail links. Any photo's you want to show off here then email me them please.

Friday 12th: Sports hall free if you want to Shoot.

27 October 2003
Anyone fancy a night out in Durham? Well we have a meal set for Friday the 7th November. If you're interested then give Mike a prod in the ribs and say 'Mr McGowan, you shoot like a flatulant walrus' and he'll be glad to book you in.
At this point in time our club has quite a bit of cash to spend on 'essential archery equipment' but we would also like to hear from you if think there are other items that a goodly amount of money might be able to sort out. I for one would say a good selection of club trophies might encourage competition within the club. Any suggestions should be posted to Mike & Dave c/o Holiday Villa, Barbados, and we'll check what's left in the kitty.
13 September 2003
Goodness!! has it been that long since I last put finger to keyboard..merry christmas and a happy new year, hope you enjoyed them :-)
Let's see now, what has happened...well we still shoot at Gilesgate, it was decided that Chester le Street was too much hassle (parking could be a nightmare, and they had the disconcerting habit of not telling us when the field was going to be in use by someone else)so reliable Gilesgate it is for the forseeable future.
Our club membership has increased, and yet we are getting about the same number of archers showing up every week as last year, just as well because we are running out of room indoors!
It's nice to see more people mucking in with the setting up and taking down of equipment, muchos gracias.
No news yet on the Xmas meal, but the canny money is on the DLI again.
No club shoot this year!! that was a short lived tradition...I know the trophies weren't great but it's the honour that counts! < personal whinge > I know our club is very informal but it would be nice to see some planning of club events < /personal whinge >
Oh yes!...GNAS fees are due. (hmmm...note to self, try and end with more glad tidings next time).
25 November 2002
As there is no archery on 27th Nov., 4th December & 11th December is the meal, so no archery till 13th (friday night) December.
11 October 2002
For those who like there food you will be delighted to hear that the D.L.I. will once again play host to our Xmas meal on 11th December, 7.30pm. Seating is strictly limited to all of us, and the other half, if you wish to bring 'em. Please inform Mike or myself so we can confirm with the nice people at the D.L.I. how many will be showing.
26 September 2002
Due to the lack of interest in the Saturday venue, and the expense it incurs, we have stopped this shoot and started Friday night again. It is 7pm til 9pm at Gilesgate Community Center.
The Tyne Tees tournament went off without a hitch (save for the rain and the cold wind), many thanks to those that helped.
5 September 2002
We shoot indoors as of 11th September 7pm til 9pm. But! we are still shooting outdoors on a Saturday afternoon, 12.00pm til 4.30pm.
We aren't getting many people showing on Saturday! We would appreciate any feedback from members as to whether they would prefer another day or if the venue isn't suitable? Chester Le Street sports club have announced their preliminary costs for the new indoor hall to be built next year...at present it is very expensive, some 10 times more expensive than our current hall on a Wednesday night.
We host the Tyne Tees tournament on Sunday 22nd September. An Albion (3 dozen arrows each at 80 yards, 60 yards and 50 yards). Sighters at 11am, plenty of places, so lets have a good club turn out please.....please!
16 July 2002
Due to the poor attendance on a Friday (it clashes with pub opening hours), we have now moved our second shoot to a SATURDAY same Bat place different Bat time. We shoot from about 12pm till about 4.30pm, so plenty of time to get those rounds shot!!
We look forward to seeing you ALL there.
18 April 2002
We move on the 24th. A map has been quickly constructed from cereal boxes and stickyback plastic and is available on the Club Details page. It's not 100% accurate, because well, the maps just don't go into that much detail. But you will see our bosses on the field so just head for them.
Parking will cost 80p for the 3 hour period (6pm till 9pm. 50p 1st hour, 80p for 2 hours, free after 8pm).
We will move the beginners well away from the "serious" archers so you won't have to wait for them to finish before collecting your arrows, as we had to do indoors.
13 March 2002
We will be moving to Chester Le Street for the outdoor season in mid April (17th or 24th). Exactly what kind of payment system we will adopt is still to be decided (though we don't forsee any hike in shooting fees for the time being).
We are still undecided as to whether to change our club name when we move (Durham City being about 5 miles away), Durham County Archers is nicely close our current name, but some say it is a bit to all encompassing of the region and makes us sound as if we are a really big and important club :-) (well we will be shooting at the centre of sporting excellence).
Lumley Archers has been suggested (by me) but the choice will be put to the club members at a future date.
2 February 2002
There will be no archery on the 13th and 15th of this month, as Gilesgate is finally getting around to resurfacing the parking area and asides from having to park out on the street we would have to walk around the back of the school to get access to the hall. Instead we (Mike & myself) thought we might have another club meal, if there are any takers.
On the next shoot (the 6th) we will have a vote as to whether we will move to Chester Le Street for the outdoor season. We would then become 'Durham County Archers' instead of 'City Archers'.
28 January 2002
A new year and some good news to start us off! From initial negotiations between Mike, Robert and the Chester Le Street Center for Sporting Excellence (I mean where else would we look?). It appears that their outdoor rates are very reasonable. The facility is, needless to say, excellent. And best of all, it is only 5 minutes from where I live, isn't that great?!
We have yet to sign on the dotted line but it seems very likely that we will snap their hand off if their offer is valid.
Indoors is still to be held here until such time as Chester le Street get their sports hall completed, and we know what they will charge (after all Gilesgate will soon(ish) be extending their hall to an acceptable size and they may be cheaper, though the storage issue is a big problem with Gilesgate).
Our new club minutes will be posted as soon as I get them.
That is all, carry on with your business.
10 December 2001
We have registered several domain names for the club: dcarchers.co.uk; durhamarchers.co.uk & durhamcityarchers.co.uk
We will shortly (start your stopwatches) be moving the site to one of these names, and forwarding the other ones to that site.
We were getting tired of that annoying ad on our site and so the club has forked out a bit of dosh to get a proper name on the web.
I hope to remodel the new site, adding frames and changing the background and buttons etc.., and the current site will remain open for the forseeable future (seeing as it's free)
23 November 2001
Just to let you know that we are shooting only in the sportshall this coming Wednesday (due to exams in the gym).
The club's Xmas meal will be at the DLI in two weeks time (the 5th of Dec. I believe).
The AGM will be the first shoot back in the New Year (the 9th of Jan.)
Two of our club members have started an archery supply business. It is called A J ARCHERY SUPPLIES and not only is it the only local archery supplier that I know of but it is also VERY good value. Any queries then ask Robert or email me and I will put in touch with him.
17 September 2001
Well, although only TWO of you handed in enough score sheets to get a handicap we still had a great first club competition. Not the handicap shoot we were hoping for but the open format served just as well.
We had 16 entrants, split evenly between juniors and seniors. The weather was suprisingly good! sunshine of all things (except for a brief shower near the end)and a slight breeze.
Seniors shot a Western and juniors shot a junior Western. The scores will be checked by the lovely Mr McGowan and those wonderful lumps of wood will be presented to the winners of each category on this coming Wednesday , applause is optional.
Thanks to all who took part, and I hope this will inspire you into taking part in more county competitions (though I'm not one to talk)or at least start SCORING when you shoot.
**For those who have not yet heard we are back indoors from this Wednesday and Friday, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm**
02 August 2001
Our FIRST EVER club competition will be held Sunday 16th September
But we need you to start shooting rounds! even piddly little rounds will be accepted, just get three score sheets in to me so I can work out your handicaps and then we can have a really good competition. If you don't I shall walk around with a lump hammer and dish out some 'on the spot' handicaps.
Mike McGowan needn't hand in any score sheets as we can all see he's crap, so I'll give you max. handicap from the off.
27 June 2001
As of three weeks ago (a bit late notice I know) we started shooting outdoors on a Friday as well as Wednesdays.
We now have our xtra large backstop net ready for the indoor season.
11 May 2001
For those who don't yet know, Gilesgate school and the community centre have each agreed to pay 1/3rd the cost of a new net. With their generous offer we can afford to get an 18m by 3m net that stretches all the way across the hall
and will actually catch those pesky 'high fliers' and 'floor to wall missiles' some people are so fond of loosing.
This of course, means that along with our old twin net we will be able to use both sports halls next season on a Wednesday whilst using just the one on the Friday (clashing as we do with the Kung Fu lessons).
Also, plans are afoot to extend the main sports hall to 40 yards in length. This is excellent news! after all these years of looking for a hall where we can actually shoot a full 20 yards but still keep the club solvent, it seems that staying put will be the very best solution, as the hall will be much cheaper than anywhere else of comparative size and we can shoot upto 30 yards indoors (much more challenging for us compound archers :-) ).
25 April 2001
Our outdoor season starts next Wednesday. We start at 6 pm and shoot till it gets dark. Distances to be shot will be decided on the day.
****START SHOOTING ROUNDS**** we will try to arrange our first club competition at the end of this season. It will be a handicap competition so everyone will stand a good chance of winning **providing** you shoot at least three complete rounds before hand and hand them to David Forster so you can get a handicap score.
13 April 2001
Yahoo have changed their guestbook protocols, so our guestbook no longer worked, I don't know exactly how long it's been down (serves me right for not checking often enough). But I have added their new version (which I don't think is as good) and left a link to the old guest page for those who want to view it.
I have been tinkering with our Club Logo and made a link to a Smiley Gallery via the logo picture on the main page. I shall do some more later, as soon as I have gotten to grips with some 3D packages I will try to make it 3 dimensional.
12 April 2001, 12:30 am
I have finally created a news page, I also added a Club Minutes page to link to our increasing number of yearly minutes (as to whether I add some back dated Minutes, well..I doubt it).
I will, I will, I will keep this updated regularly, so if anyone has something to add here please let me know.
Now if you don't mind, I'm off to bed.
Ok so I also transferred our club logo onto our site, I know it isn't suited for background on the Minutes page but I just wanted to see what it looked like.
Mike will take any orders for clothing with the logo on it, remember our club colours are Black and Gold. So black t-shirts are the norm.
