The Quebec Nordiques selected Stephane in the second round (24th overall)
of the 1987 Entry Draft. He made his debut with the Nordiques in 1989-90,
seeing action in six games. He recorded his first NHL victory against the
Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 29, 1991. In 1994-95, Stephane spent his first full
season in the NHL, going 17-10-3 in 32 games with a 2.78 goals-against
average. He won his first Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996,
before being traded with a 1998 first-round draft pick (Mathieu Biron)
to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Eric Lacroix and a 1998 first
round draft
pick (Martin Skoula) on June 20, 1996. Stephane posted a career-high
four shutouts with the Kings in 1996-97. In 1997-98, he recorded career-bests
with 60 games, 3,497 minutes, 26 wins, and a 2.71 goals-against average.
Through the end of the 1997-98 season, Stephane achieved his 100th
NHL victory. In 1998-99, he went 18-21-1 in 42 games. He also posted
three shutouts.
Prior to playing professionally, Stephane spent three seasons with
Victoriaville of the QMJHL. In 1987-88, he played 40 games and posted a
15-17-4 record, along with a 3.94 goals-against average. He won the CHL
Goaltender of the Year Award and was named to the QMJHL First All-Star
Team in 1988-89, after going 25-14-0 in 43 games. In 1989-90, Stephane
led the league with a 2.73 goals-against average in 24 games.
In 1990, Stephane was a member of the gold medal-winning Team Canada
at the World Junior Championships. In 1994, Stephane won a gold medal at
the World Championships in Italy.
