Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- This time, Ian Laperriere and Steve Passmore made sure there was no third-period collapse by the Los Angeles Kings.

Laperriere's first career hat trick and Passmore's second career shutout helped the Kings to a 5-0 blanking of the Boston Bruins, who were handed their first defeat of the season.

Laperriere dedicated his spectacular performance to his father, Michel, who is battling pancreatic cancer.

"It feels really good, I feel lucky," he said. "I was at the right place at the right time and they found me. I want to dedicate the hat trick to my father. I talk to him every day. I am going to call him right now, I am sure he was watching the game. My knee surgery (in the offseason) is nothing compared to what he is going through. He's doing good and he's battling back."

On Wednesday, Los Angeles built a 4-0 lead after two periods against St. Louis. But the Blues rallied for four goals in the third period to steal a point in a 4-4 draw.

Laperriere capped a three-goal first period with 5:20 remaining. Rookie Steven Reinprecht passed to Laperriere at the left faceoff circle, where he fired a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

The 26-year-old Laperriere scored again at 2:44 of the second period, taking another feed from Reinprecht and one-timing a shot over rookie goaltender Andrew Raycroft, who took over for an ineffective Byron Dafoe after 20 minutes.

Luc Robitaille helped seal Laperriere's career night when he fired a pass that caromed off his skate and between Raycroft's pads with 2:50 left in the third period. Laperriere already is a third of the way to matching his goal total for all of 1999-00.

Passmore got the start because Jamie Storr was late for a team meeting earlier today. He took advantage of the opportunity and earned his first victory in a Kings' uniform by turning aside all 18 shots for his first shutout since November 12, 1999 as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

"I don't have any team rules, but don't break any," Los Angeles coach Andy Murray cautioned. "Jamie was late for a team meeting today. It was clear to me that Steve Passmore was going to play as soon as that happened. I am not mad at Jamie, he was going to be the goalie tonight, but Steve got the chance and did well. It's accountability, you should be there or at least call."

Although the game was out of reach, the Bruins had a chance to spoil Passmore's shutout in the third. They had a two-man advantage for 1:43 after defensemen Jaroslav Modry and Mathieu Schneider received minors penalties, but Boston managed just one shot on both power plays.

After allowing six goals with the extra man in their first three road games, the Kings have killed all 11 power plays in two home contests.

"I didn't know (I would start) until I showed up at the pregame skate this morning," Passmore said. "This was really a team shutout because (the Bruins) did not have a ton of great scoring chances. We kept the puck on the outside and kept them away from the rebounds."

Boston was off to its best start since going 3-0-1 to open the 1992-93 season. A victory would have given the Bruins their best five-game start since going 4-0-1 in 1990-91.

"I think that we didn't work as hard as we should have," Boston defenseman Kyle McLaren said. "They were a better team tonight all around the ice. From power play to penalty-killing, they basically dominated the game. It's something we have to learn from."

Ziggy Palffy opened the scoring at 4:23 of the first period with his fourth goal of the season. Cutting to the slot, he swept Modry's pass between Dafoe's pads.

Dafoe, who was making his first start since leaving Saturday's contest against Philadelphia with a hamstring pull, stopped only eight shots. Raycroft made 14 saves in his third NHL game.

Los Angeles scored its ninth power-play tally of the campaign when rookie Eric Belanger picked up a loose puck and backhanded it over Dafoe's right shoulder for his second goal midway through the first period.
