Newsletter February 2001

In this issue:

Once again another AGM has come and gone. Congratulations to all the office bearers in the club committee for the year 2001. A complete list of office bearers is in the AGM report. A special congratulations must go to Peter Chessher, winning the John Ferris Memorial Trophy for his work on the new target butts. Well done, Dad!

Another point of interest is the Warringah Open earlier this month. Just like we promised, we came home with the team trophy. We also did very well individually - in the compound elimination event, half the compeditors were from KGB. There was a very strong team spirit, with many club members showing up for the event. Well done to all of us!

As you may be aware, this is my first newsletter for the club. Thanks to Gregory Rowell for doing it over the past few years. I look forward to bringing you many newsletters for as long as I can!

Please Note:
"I would like to remind everyone, especially the newer members, to remember to arrive early to help set up the field and bring in targets before you go home. It's a volunteer sport and everyone needs to volunteer."

Some sound advise from Nick Horley, club president.

Until next time, happy shooting!

Annual General Meeting 11th February 2001

2000 KGB President's Report

The year 2000 proved another good year for the KGB, especially with the extra interest in the sport generated by the Olympics.

The club members have been bolstered through the large beginner classes and there have generally been more archers on the shooting line every Sunday.

From Juniors to Seniors and even Veterans our club has been well represented at almost every tournament. We always figured prominently in the placings.

We are gradually phasing out our cardboard targets with foam, which are lighter, cheaper and easier to maintain.

We also recently purchased a sunshade that should allow for shooting in the rain under shelter using the foam targets!

With our recent good showing at the Warringah Open Tournament I look forward to another good year and wish everyone the best of luck.

Nick Horley, President KGB

2000 KGB Treasurer's Report

Treasurer's report not disclosed here.

2000 KGB Recorder's Report

The following is a summary of the report.

The most improved new member has been Peter Tait, compound shooter, who put in his first score in April and by the end of the year had worked is way up to an 80 rating. How many of us made a start like that in only 8 months?

The best performing member was Nick Horley, reaching his 100 rating in March, gaining his Master Bowman classification in June and putting in 42 score sheets, more than anyone else.

A total of 62 new club records were achieved this year, with 37 of them going to Andrew Chessher (19) and Greg Pagano (18). Roger K. also got a minor state record (842, Perth).

An interclub shoot was held at Erina in 2000. The handicap result was a tied score between Andrew Chessher and Sue Henthorn, with Sue winning the event in a countback.

Sue, David and D.B. had to return to W.A. during the year. Greg and Bob Pagano have also had to go back to the USA, where they will hopefully continue shooting once they have settled down.

On page seven I have included a list of ratings and records Roger presented at the AGM.

John Ferris Memorial Trophy

Peter Chessher was awarded the John Ferris Memorial Trophy as Club Member of the Year in acknowedgement of Peter's work for the club particularly in the area of development and production of new targets.

The Warringah Open
David Boyd

The Warringah Open was held on the 4th of February 2001 and KGB had an excellent turn out. The weather was promising to be warm and humid typical for February and turned out to be so. Also typical of Warringah is the wind and I did hear one member say (no names) with hope that it may subside but to allay his fears I informed him that it was sure to get stronger and indeed it did!

I think everybody enjoyed the day, especially Bob Cheary, one of our newest members, having a great time with his new bow. Doug Browne took home a medal in his first tournament in the barebow category with a score of 882.

The major round was a Sydney followed by an elimination round for the best top 10 scores of each bow type. In the compound division KGB had five out of the ten places all vying for a Hitachi VCR. Nick was the first of our lot to fall probably due to a lull in the wind to put him off followed by Ed then David, Allan and finally Roger. Jim Larven from Liverpool won the round and took the booty. Nick vowed that he will win it next year.

In the Ladies compound Maria Doyle, due to much partying and lack of practice won second place with a score of 907 (quote: always the bridesmaid never the bride). Helen Moore took third with 857 after a small equipment failure (still teething problems Paul will have to fix.)

The second place in the men's compound veterans was won by Allan McVicar with a score of 1086. Other vets were Roger Klooster on 1043, Peter Chessher on 1032 and Paul Moore on 1009. In the men's compound Nick won a third place with 1083, with Ed on 1076,David on 1055 and Roger (Two Tone) Irving on 901.

Last but not least was Andrew Chessher who took third place in the under 14 boys with a score of 1011.

To top the day off the men's team trophy was won by Allan McVicar, Ed Rapsevicius, Nick Horley and David Boyd and by quite a large margin I might add from second place.

Highest score of the day, Jim Larven again, took home a nice flat screen television.

All in all a good days shooting and I think enjoyed by all.

Some of the KGB members enjoying themselves at the Warringah Open... Some obviously need the shade more than others!

Archery Web Sites
Andrew Chessher

In a search for information about archery, a good place to start looking is on the Internet. A search for archery using google.com produced 850 relevant hits. A lot of junk is out there, but these are some of the better sites that caught our attention. Some of the commercial sites feature equipment that we can only dream about buying in Sydney, but at least it gives you an idea of what is available when you have to look further afield for buying equipment.

FITA - www.fita.org
The official FITA site. Includes some very intense coaching advice, obviously aimed at the serious Olympic and international level, but contains information that all of us could use.

Archer 30s Archery Pages - members.theglobe.com/archer_30/Archery.html
A good site for novice archers. Topics include serving strings, tuning compound bows and sighting.

The Bowman's Archery Solutions - www.thebowman.com
An excellent site for all areas of archery. Includes extensive technical guides for all aspects of tuning and maintaining your bow. Probably the best site for looking up the technical points of archery (mind you, Roger K. still knows more!).

National Archery Association - www.usarchery.org
The official site of the National Archery Association in the US. A section of particular interest is the History section, which has a interesting and concise history of archery. Proudly proclaims Vic Wunderle as winner of the silver medal at the Olympics (with just a small mention of our Simon)

Link doesn't work!!! - users.ozlinx.com.au/~tomw
The personal home page of Tom Woodley of Ipswich, Queensland. The page has not changed in some time but for those who have not looked at it, it is well worth a visit. Some well thought-out and well presented observations.

Centenary Archers Club - www.centenaryarchers.gil.com.au
The site of Centenary Archers in Queensland. An excellent list of general topics, including rounds of archery, rules, basic equipment, shooting form and much more. Also includes a good list of links.

Ed's Archery Pages - edd.alaska.net
While generally written and presented for hunters, there is much technical information of value to target archers.

Martin's Archery Page - free.prohosting.com/~mfoster/archery/archery.html
Easier to get to this site by using your search engine to look for "martin's archery page". Sound but basic information on many aspects of archery.

Sagittarius Twente, University Archery Club - www.student.utwente.nl/campus/sagi
The best part about this site is the list of excuses (never mind the bad spelling, it's just about net standard!). The one that caught my eye was "My brain got in the way!" Funnily enough, I started fitting people in the club to some of the excuses. The section on Selected Archery Articles has some interesting background reading on the history of archery.

Mind Tools - www.mindtools.com
Not an archery site as such, but an extensive site devoted to sports psychology. If you are going to print out all the articles, beware - be sure to have enough paper and ink or toner - this baby's long!

If anyone else sees a good archery site around, don't hesitate to let me know and I'll include it in the next newsletter.

Finally…

"Remember that if you want your scores recorded and any records claimed on your behalf you need THREE archers shooting the round at the same time. Scoresheets must be signed by yourself and two witnesses and use full name and name of round on the scoresheets. Only rounds shot as per the calander can be claimed. If records are being claimed and scoresheets are not filled in correctly I will not be chasing you the next week to make corrections." Roger Klooster, AGM Recorder's Report.
