In terms of importance, stabilizers are second only to sight as a piece of equipment to improve accuracy. Every time you draw the bow, you are storing energy. Upon release most of that energy is directed to the arrow, the rest of the energy is absorbed by the bow and causes shock and vibration. Stabilizers absorb this vibration, making the bow shoot and feel smoother.
With todays increased bow speeds and lighter arrows, bows have a much higher frequency of vibration. That's why stabilizers are stiffer today - to match the higher frequency bows.
The rule here seems to be the faster and more efficient the bow the stiffer the stabilizer. So here's some combinations to give you some examples.
You're
going to buy a 28lb recurve with laminated glass limbs. This bow would
be considered slow and relatively inefficient due to the glass limbs
and would therefore have low frequency vibrations. Hence you could use
a tapered aluminium or carbon stabilizer. The tapered stabilizer will
absorb less high frequency vibrations than a parallel one but still
provide adequate vibration dampening at an affordable cost. Length would
depend on the bow length and your draw length; the shorter your draw
length the shorter the stabilizer.
Now if you went up in pounds and bought carbon limbs you would need to buy a parallel aluminium or carbon stabilizer. This is because the carbon limbs would increase speed and efficiency, and hence increase high frequency vibrations. A parallel rod, either carbon or aluminium, will therefore be required as they absorb more high frequency vibrations and therefore are more suited to carbon limbs and the lighter carbon arrows.
Ok, lets say you want to buy a compound. Compound bows in general produce large amounts of high frequency vibrations. Hence to reduce the vibration that the archer is exposed to it is necessary to use a parallel stabilizer. Lighter poundage or less efficient compounds however, could get away with using an aluminium stabilizer, as they produce less high frequency vibration than carbon limb or heavy poundage compounds. But if you use an efficient compound or shoot carbon arrows, a parallel carbon rod is a necessity.
Every setup is different for each archer and therefore this explanation should only be used as a guide, I'm sure though that this information will help new archers to gain insight into some aspects of stabilizers selection.
As always your coaches will be there to help you if you need further help with your choice.
