If you do not subscribe to any overseas magazine you certainly would not been made aware of the results. So we thought that we would include a summary of this event after browsing through 3 archery magazines. Special thanks to the New Zealand Archer which included results specific to downunder archery. A total of 467 archers competed making it the largest World Championships ever. A full team of Australiatralian Archers attended , both recurve and compound. Results after the FITA round were as follows:
Shoot Off RoundsWomens Recurve: Australia's Melissa Jennison beat the USA's Denise Parker 150-149 in the first of her shoot off rounds. In her next round Melissa went down to France's Alexandra Fouace. Womens Compound: Madeline Ferris won her first match against France's Sandrine Vandionant 159-153. Unfortunately Marie Hulbert of NSW missed out, going down 155-164 against Mary-Ann Richardson of Great Britain. Mens Recurve: South Australia's Simon Fairweather won against Henrik Toft 158-152. In the second round though Simon was to tie with Nico Hendriks (Belgium) on a score of 161, only to miss out on the one arrow shoot off. Scott Hunter-Russell tied in his first shoot off with Baljinima Tsyrempilov, but was then eliminated in the one arrow shoot off. Matthew Gray missed out 157-163 against Goran Bjerendal. Mens Compound: Jim Larven was the only one to go through the qualifying round, but unfortunately lost out to Gerhard Kranbeter of Australia 178-165. Kranbeter's score was a new World Record for 18 arrows. TEAMS EVENTS The only team to qualify was the Mens Recurve Team. In their first round they beat Germany 242 -231. In the next round they were up against the USA and tied with them on 235. Unfortunately they were to be eliminated by one point in the shoot off.
![]() Sydney Golden International Arrow 20-26th September 1999From www.archery.org - Posted 20 September 1999 Korea dominate on day one. Korean archers set the early pace on day one of the Sydney International Golden Arrow in Australiatralia, a world ranking event and the Olympic Test Tournament before the 2000 Games. Korea's Hong Sung-Chil led the way in the men's recurve ranking round at the Sydney International Archery Park. A first round score of 329 together with a second round effort of 337 was enough to give him first place. Five points behind on 661 was Italy's Michele Frangilli. Hong's teammate Kim Bo-Ram finished in third place on 657. Korea also took first place in the women's recurve qualification which featured celebrity archer and actress Geena Davis among its 55 competitors, after the American was given a wildcard into the competition. Chung Chang-Sook shot the best score of 653 after her two rounds. Compatriot Lee Eun-Kyung was nine points behind in second place and Turkey's Natalie Nasaridze took third with 629. Davis' tally of 552 was only good enough to give her 49th place. She now faces world number two Alison Williamson. In the men's team qualification, Korea continued their dominance with an unbeaten score of 1,978. Italy finished second with 1,913 while the Netherlands took third with their 1,907 effort. From www.archery.org - Posted 21 September 1999 World champion defeated. World champion archer Lee Eun Kyung was beaten in the Sydney Golden Arrow Olympic Test tournament by world number 17 Wenche-Lin Hess on 21 September. The windy conditions made it difficult for both archers, but Hess was able to edge past her opponent by one shot, winning 132-131. Alison Williamson also progressed to the next round, beating the much publicised actress Geena Davis. Williamson overcame a recent shoulder problem to notch an impressive 160 out of 180. Williamson will meet the only Korean archer still in the competition, Chung Chang-Sook, in the next round. The men's competition sees both the last 32 and last 16 stages completed on 22 September. From www.archery.org - Posted 22 September 1999 Reverse fortunes for Russian pair. There were mixed fortunes for the Russians in the elimination rounds of the Sydney Golden Arrow Olympic Test Tournament. Tsyrempilov Balzinima caused the upset of the 1/32 finals, beating defending world champion Hong Sung Chil of Korea by one point. The flip side of the coin was a surprising defeat for Youri Leontiev, who was ousted by Chinese Taipei archer Chang CP. Leontiev finished fourth at the recent World Championships in July. American Justin Huish defeated Jackson Fear of Australiatralia in the 1/32 round by 158-142. Fear blamed nerves for the loss, saying: "I just need to practice in these situations. I was really nervous". Huish himself suffered defeat after progressing to the 1/16 round where faced Michele Frangilli of Italy and, after an exciting match, the Italian triumphed by a single point. The challenge now facing Frangilli comes in the shape of Sweden's Magnus Petersson in the 1/8 eliminations to be held on 24 September. The competition continues on 23 September with the women's 1/8 eliminations and finals. Britain's Alison Williamson comes up against Chung Chang Sook of Korea and both should know what to expect. They met earlier this year in the Warsaw Grand Prix with the British archer losing the match. However, that statistic should not play on Williamson's mind, as she has already produced a statistic of greater significance in this competition, shooting 160, the highest score by a female archer in the event so far.
