Henry Bibby met Virginia, a native of Trinidad, in New York City when he played for the '73 N.B.A. champion Knicks. He saw her in the stands and though she was very beuatiful. They met through a mutual friend. They later got married, had four children and followed the bouncing ball from city to city before settling in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1980, when Mike was two.Virginia settled in Arizona because her mother had to move there due to her arthiritis.  After coaching in the minor pro leagues, Henry landed a job as an assistant coach at Arizona State. But after a recruiting scandal there in 1985, he went back to being a coaching gypsy: Baltimore, Maryland; Savannah, Georgia; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Venezuela. His trips home to Phoenix lost all frequency, and Henry's presence was reduced to an electronic pager he left with the kids .

Mike, who played with his two older brothers, became a basketball prodigy. As a senior at Shadow Mountain High, he averaged 34 points a game while leading the team to the state title. Genes have something to do with it--uncle Jim Bibby pitched a no-hitter in 1973--but be careful about declaring this a rout for nature over nurture. Virginia is more responsible for Mike's genius than Henry is.

In Highschool, he was the Three-time Arizona High School Player of the Year at Shadow Mountain High, All-time Arizona high school state scoring leader (3,002 points) and was a 1996 McDonald's High School All-American.

Mike and his mother

"My mother was the one who forced me to go out to practice, to jump rope when I didn't want to," says Mike. Once, Mike was hip -- woofing, smacking and jawjacking without conscience. "I was talking to everybody: talking to the refs, talking to the crowds, to the other team, to the bench," said Bibby, the University of Arizona's freshman phenom. "Had a couple staredowns, but not any fights." But during his junior year at Phoenix Shadow Mountain High, Bibby had an, uh, awakening. "My mom," he said, "told me to shut up." She is a wonderful person." While Mike freely talks about his mother, who never misses a game, he has little to say about his father and even refuses to take his calls or answer his letters. It didn't help matters when Henry became the U.S.C. coach --Arizona and Southern Cal are Pac 10 rivals. In January, on the eve of Arizona's visit to U.S.C., Mike told the Orange County Register, "You know, my mom isn't a famous person like my dad. But I wish when they say, 'Mike Bibby, son of Henry Bibby,' and all that stuff, I wish they could just say, 'Son of Virginia Bibby.' She's the reason I'm here. That's who I am."

Henry offered Mike a scholarship to USC and was turned down. When Mike arrived at Arizona, he told his roommate to screen his calls - if Henry Bibby called, Mike didn't live there.

"He's ... tender," Olson said last month. "I mean, you never see him do or say anything that embarrasses someone else. Mike is a competitor, but he is a caring, sensitive young guy." What's not to like about a kid who lists Burger King as his favorite place to eat? About a kid who lists trash talking as the thing he would most like to change about basketball? Mike has two older brothers and a younger sister.

In Mike's freshmen year in college, he was the PA-10 Freshmen of the year, ranked 3rd in conference in assists, led Arizona to their first NCAA Championship-named to the All-Final four team, and started in all 34 games.

In Mike's Sophomore year at Arizona, he Consensus first team All-American, PAC-10 Player of the, Second in the conference in steals and assists, Scored career high 26 points, twice - career high 13 assists vs Morgan State in season opener, Led Wildcats in steals and assists, tied for second in scoring-started all 35 games - averaged 32.1 minutes.

Mike also has a baby son that he supports. He says that it was really tough trying to go to college and take care of his kid and money was running really short. Also, he decided that he was ready physically and mentally, to go to the NBA. And so he entered himself in the draft and it was greatly anticipated that he would get first pick but Olowakandi beat him to it. However, he got second pick and was drafted to the Vancouver Grizzlies.
