May 16 v Visique Whakatane

Desire and determination were the decisive factors in an exciting local derby on Saturday. Visique Whakatane were hosts to Gary Fowell Builders in BOP division one. The home team started well, and Rangers' keeper Chris Johnston made an excellent one-on-one save to keep Whakatane out. Whakatane had several early chances and then won a penalty, however Johnston, in a man of the match display, saved the penalty. Rangers were gradually building into the game and captain Jason Pullar had the ball in the back of the Whakatane net, but the goal was ruled out for off side. Mid way through the half, Rangers were awarded a penalty after Jordan Ogilvy was brought down in the box. Pullar stepped up and converted the chance confidently. Whakatane deservedly equalised and the half ended at a goal apiece.
The excitement built as the game went on. The crucial battle of the midfield was going Rangers way, with Pullar leading the way. Rangers retook the lead with a well taken strike, and then the home team scored. Rangers' player-coach Aaron Muggeridge came on and held the ball up well, keeping the Whakatane defenders on their toes. A great cross from Ogilvy found Muggeridge, but his shot was well saved by the keeper. With fifteen minutes to go Ogilvy smashed a left foot volley into the goal to give Rangers the lead again. The final score Whakatane 2, Plains Rangers 3.
The determination of the Rangers team was evident throughout, with everybody making a contribution. Stand out performers were Johnston, Pullar, Kirk Bain and Kyle Knight.
This Saturday Rangers are away to Taupo.
