eram homenageados na França, Zagallo recebia, na Alemanha, o título de melhor técnico
do mundo.
Justa recompensa para quem não se limitou a traçar seus planos no papel e a se queixar
de títulos que nunca conquistou, que quase conquistou ou que teria merecido conquistar.
Justíssima recompensa para quem foi a campo, seja como jogador, seja como treinador, para
mostrar com quanto sangue se faz um campeão. Muitas vezes injustiçado no Brasil, acabou
reconhecido longe, bem longe do próprio país.
O fato não chega a ser estranho para parte de um povo que tem o péssimo costume de
cuspir para cima e de gritar "como sou feio" para todos os espelhos do mundo,
tal qual o Narciso às avessas citado pelo escritor e jornalista Nelson Rodrigues.Na volta
da premiação, já no Rio de Janeiro, o único homem do planeta tetracampeão do mundo,
esteve visitando o seu amigo Admildo Chirol.
Chirol, que vem mostrando uma insuspeitada veia jornalística, anotou as seguintes
observações feitas por Zagallo.
" ...Foi muito bonito.Tenho de agradecer muito a indicação do
meu nome e tendo sido considerado o melhor do mundo, vindo da Europa, para minha vida
esportiva foi muito importante. Quando me perguntaram o que fiz para chegar onde cheguei,
deixei claro que não venci sozinho. O sucesso nunca é só de uma pessoa. Eu, como
jogador, sempre trabalhei para o time, e como treinador, eu sempre fui um homem de equipe.
Lembrei com emoção daqueles que jogaram ao meu lado e daqueles que trabalharam comigo, a
comissão técnica de 70 e a de 94, preparadores físicos, supervisores, médicos,
jogadores, em fim todos aqueles que contribuíram para o meu sucesso.
E o sucesso é o resultado de um conjunto de fatores. Repito: ninguém ganha
nada sozinho. Eu quis mostrar para todos que estavam presentes que o meu nome estava
ali representando um país e que eu tinha de agradecer a todos os que colaboraram com a
minha vida esportiva...
"... Nas entrevistas que aconteceram, eles consideram a seleção Brasileira como a
grande favorita, para a copa do mundo.O Clemente, técnico da Espanha, que foi o segundo
colocado, quando entrevistado, ele me elogiou muito, mas profetizou que a copa do mundo
ficaria na Europa.
Quando me chamaram para receber o troféu, que é uma bola muito bonita e que tem a inscrição World Cup 98, eu aproveitei para agradecer as palavras do Clemente e com a minha franqueza, discordei dele, dizendo que o Brasil , respeitava as seleções européias, mas estava preparado para ser penta."
"... Essa festa foi realizada em Rotemburgo e teve a mesma dimensão da outra festa
que estava sendo realizada em Paris pela FIFA .
E tem mais: é bom ser homenageado por um país que não é qualquer um, é a Alemanha, cuja tradição em copas do mundo é respeitável. Os alemães são tricampeões e estão sempre chegando junto. Indicar um treinador sul-americano, então nem se fala. A segunda colocação foi do Clemente, da Espanha, e a terceira do Glen Hoddle da Inglaterra.
".... A festa estava repleta de gente famosa, entre eles o grande jogador húngaro Puskas. Ele está mais gordo, anda pelos 70 anos de idade e voltou a viver na Hungria
No dia seguinte à festa, fomos convidados, eu e o Puskas, para ir a cidade de Fulda, quase setenta quilômetros distante e que é uma cidade maior, com 60.000 habitantes. Fomos homenageados pelo alcaide.Estivemos no Palácio, nos prestaram uma homenagem, com um almoço todo requintado. Atenção, Areosa, não precisei pagar nada... Mas não sou pão-duro, não. Era uma festa.
Foi um ambiente de muita cordialidade. O Puskas com a mulher dele e eu com a Alcina, minha eterna companheira de todas as horas.
Tivemos também uma entrevista com a imprensa de Fulda
À noite, tivemos um reunião em Rotemburgo com treinadores locais, e entre outras coisas, perguntaram ao Puskas quando ele havia começado a jogar futebol. Ele respondeu que aos 9 meses, assim que nasceu.
E quando me fizeram a mesma pergunta, disse de gozação: "foi aos sete meses, quando dei os primeiros chutes dentro da barriga da minha mãe".
Foi maravilhoso esse contato meu e da Alcina com o Puskas e a dona Elizabete, mulher
dele.
Estou muito orgulhoso e feliz com isso tudo."

"... In the interviews that happened, they consider the Brazilian team as the big favorite, for the cup of the world. Clemente, coach of the spanish team, that was the placed second, when interviewee, he eulogized me a lot, but it prophesied that the cup of the world would stay in Europe. When they called me to receive the trophy, that is a very pretty ball with the inscription World Cup 98, I took advantage of to thank Clemente's words and with my frankness, I disagreed of him, saying that Brazil, respected the European selections, but it was prepared to be champion again ".
