Gymnastics Unit Plan K-3

        Gymnastic Unit Level K-3

        Objectives:
        Psychomotor
        - The learner will demonstrate the ability to perform various rolling, jumping, balancing, vaulting, hanging and climbing skills appropriate to development level.
        Cognitive - The learner will be able to describe and recognize particular cues and body positions as related to the various skills.
        Affective - The learner will demonstrate and be able to

        • learn and perform gymnastic skills cooperatively with others in a group situation.

        • accept and appreciate individual variations and performances.

        • develop and improve personal confidence and give mutual support within a group.

        Safety:
        1. The area will be clear of all hazards.
        2. Equipment will be inspected by the teacher before each class.
        3. Proper warm-up and cool down will be provided.
        4. The selected activities will be age appropriate and coincide with ability level.

        Evaluation:
        1. Teacher observation
        2. Skill evaluation
        3. Effort and participation Progression/Lessons

    Day 1


        Warm-up
        Body positions (tuck, pike, straddle, layout, ‘V’ seat)
        Bridges
        Log roll
        Egg roll 1st grade
        Forward roll 2nd & 3rd grade

    Day 2


        Warm-up
        Review body positions, log rolls, egg rolls, forward rolls
        Jumps (tuck, pike, straddle, twisting, combinations)
        1st, 2nd & 3rd grade - put combinations together ie. forward roll, stand, tuck jump
        3rd grade- mule kicks

    Day 3


        Students will rotate around the gym where they will practice different gymnastic related skills.


        Parallel Bars -

        • K & 1st - Students will travel length ways under the bars from one side to the other
        • 2nd & 3rd - straddle travel, support travel (straight arm travel),

        Balance Beam -
        walking forward, backward, sideways, gallop, skip, and hop down the beam *All jumps should be tried on a line before tried on the beam.

        Mats -

        • K, 1 & 2 - egg rolls, log rolls, forward rolls
        • 3rd - mule kicks, handstands, and cartwheels

        Monkey bars-

        Student will travel under the bars

        Ropes-

        • K - Students will do low swinging on ropes
        • 1st, 2nd &3rd - Knotted Rope >Monkey Club - Students who climb to the red tape (1,2) and the yellow tape (3) will place their name on the wall.
        • Unknotted Rope > Gorilla Club - Students who climb to the red tape (1,2) and the yellow tape (3) will place their name on the wall.

        Rings -

        • K- Students will do low swings on the rings.
        • 1st, 2nd & 3rd - pike hang, skin the cat dismounts
        • 3rd - inverted hang, “L” hang, support and “L” support on the low rings Pommel Horse - K -
        • 3rd - tuck through, leg swings,
        • 3rd - leg cuts,

    Day 4


        Students will continue to rotate around the gym where they will practice different gymnastic related skills as learned from last lesson. New areas are as follows.

        Horizontal Bar -

        K - 3 - front support, forward roll down

    Day 5

        Students will continue to rotate around gym with the same set up as previous lessons with a few variations.

        Rails -
        Students will climb rails and perform different types of hanging positions. Jumping for controlled landings will also be practiced.
        * Height of climbing and jumps will be age and ability appropriate.
        * Balance Beam - - forward rolls with a mated beam

      Day 6

        Students will continue to rotate around gym with the similar set up as previous lessons with a few variations.


        Balance Beam - Hoops will be placed around beam to travel through
        Mats - Height appropriate hurdles will be placed along mats for students to jump over.

    Day 7

        Students will continue to rotate around gym with the same set up as previous lessons with a few variations.

    Day 8

        Students will travel through an obstacle course using different gymnastic skills, problem solving skills, team work and cooperation.
